    Y'know, something just occured to me. This was 101's last ever battle, it was torn apart by Fluffy, who then proceeded to break down or otherwise underperform, not just here against Pussycat, but also in Extreme 1 (its battle was filmed after Series 5, I'm fairly confident of that) Series 6, Extreme 2 AND Series 7.
    OMG! Mystrsyko was right! 101 literally WAS armed with a curse! And when Fluffy destroyed it, the curse manifested in it and ruined the rest of its career!

    15:57 Funny how Matilda helped position Twister in front of the pit, so Clawed Hopper could push it in easier. Guess she wanted to give Clawed Hopper a moment of glory. I'm I the only one who thinks Clawed Hopper looks cool, despite it being slow?

    • @SparkOutUs
      @SparkOutUs 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      his eyes look the coolest, im making a small radio controlled walking robot at the minute, its legs work using two rotating circles per leg, one to actually move the leg with a motor chain attached and one above that one to keep the leg in place, a bit like on a steam train how you have the stick thing on the wheels moving up and down if that makes sense

    Always found pussycat kind of underwhelming in this heat, was basically given 2 byes and didn't exactly dominate either one.
    Then pretty much lost to fluffy only to have its opponent break down.
    This combined with its performances in extreme being dominated by tornado had me thinking it was a one season wonder before the tragic accident that befell dave gribble that pretty much confirmed that since no one else could drive it as well as he could.

  • @gregoryatkin1509
    @gregoryatkin1509 7 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    Ah, so the Executioner did learn to drive after all! People mention Kat 3 vs Major Tom as the 'funniest' match ever but watching The Executioner vs Dominator 2 had me in stitches. In fairness this time it almost caught Pussycat and had there been a better driver and a more liberal interpretation of the pinning rule, he could have got it in the pit. Pussycat isn't as fun to watch when it's not against a flipper though, or at least a decent robot of some kind.
    You can't really argue with the Judges' decision, but poor Andrew Cotterell must have felt utterly gutted. If Matilda hadn't intervened, I still doubt he would have won - if Razer caught where Ming 3 did, it would have crumpled the side skirts, whereas Ming just couldn't. But to have the match cut off by the house robot, and judged until then when he might have been able to swing it round... wonder if it was the House Robot driver being bored, or ordered interference.
    A shame to see Twister go, I liked the Bezerk 2 team, and the fact that they were never actually treated worse or better than any other team is something I could honestly respect. They didn't make a big fuss about disabilities in those days, they just got on with it. Clawed Hopper may not be the best engineered walker, but I reckon if they had a roller, that's not bad control and driving.
    In S3, Hypno Disc did so little damage to 101 the judges came out into the ring to try and judge and find a reason to count 101 out, whereas it goes out in the first round two seasons later. I liked tracked robots, but as has been made popular on a certain youtube channel, 101 seemed to just be built hard and keep running until the other team broke down. Mike Franklin was an engineer first and foremost, but he couldn't engineer a way out of this one.
    War of attrition is the right word. Weirdly I think this is a fight that wouldn't have been won if Pussycat wasn't so well driven - David Gribble was fighting with a machine that is quick and nippy, but not exactly easy to throw around. But that was surgical precision with which it cut off Clawed Hopper's weaponry, not letting it get at it. It's easy to say CH wouldn't have caught the Cat at all, but it took David to hit it in the right places, because CH refused to die. Think of the spinners these days, something like Pulsar or Supernova might have whacked off the extraneous armour of the walker but then died later on. With Anarchy being referred to as a shufflebot now, Clawed Hopper might be the new way forward.
    I much preferred this design of Terrorhurtz compared to the modern one, the symmetry pleases me and the way it's just a wedge in the new version doesn't have the same charm to me. That said, it's a slightly better spinner killer than this one. Ah well John, you'll have S6, and Battlebots S7...
    I do like Fluffy, it feels like the team are always over-awed by how well they've done, especially at this series of robot wars, with none of the confidence and just... going for it. When the blade comes off you can see the delight in the team as they think they win, and when Craig Charles is clearly trying to play up how 'disappointed' they are, I think they're taking it very sensibly - they broke down, it was their fault for not wiring it, it looks almost uncomfortable how Craig is treating them.
    Pussycat didn't just 'inherit' that win though. They got second last season by playing chicken with Hypno Disc, and they did it again. It might not have turned out as well, but holy hell if it didn't take serious levels of kahonies to drive straight at something like that. Interestingly when the saw comes off, you can see the pair of them looking upset - my suspicion is they got flashbacks to S3 and thought they'd get disqualified. Banging on the windows doesn't look like success, it looks like they want the House Robots to leave Fluffy alone. Cold Fusion have always been a fantastically sporting team and I think this was them feeling maybe they'd still lost, and they didn't want their rivals to get any more damaged. Obligatory RIP Alan and David, but damn. One of the great teams that hit all the sweet spots on the show. Driving, Engineering and Show.

    This heat has a lot more good robots than the last one - Pussycat, Terrorhurtz, Fluffy, even Ming 3 and 101.
    Pussycat is, I think, unique, not only in its shape but in the fact it's never been copied. Up against yet another Razer copy (this must be the year of the Razer copies).
    Ming 3 is remarkably Razer-like, even to the srimech arms on its beak. But nothing like Razer's nimbleness, easily outmanouvred by Terrorhurtz, but what the HELL is bloody Matilda doing interfering? Not once but twice. This makes a joke of the contest.
    Clawed Hopper didn't seem to have a weapon, Twister had a flywheel that didn't spin and a flipper that didn't flip. Not the most impressive bots.
    101 is a moderately capable robot, good pushing power and good speed, but its tracks are very vulnerable to a powerful horizontal spinner - like Fluffy. That spinning blade (?rotor? ?hammers?) is impressive. And Fluffy looks to be invertible too.
    So how much impression can Pussycat make on a bot twice its weight? Pretty sure Clawed Hopper can't put a claw on the Cat. Well Pussycat inflicted more damage than I expected, but Clawed was still hopping unimpaired at the end. Still, a safe win for Pussycat.
    Terrorhurtz vs Fluffy - this could go either way. Well, Terrorhurtz was off like lightning straight into Fluffy - but Fluffy (as soon as it could get clear and its weapon spun up) knocked the side off Terrorhurtz. Pussycat will be watching with interest and some concern, I think. And Shunt fell in the pit again.
    Fluffy vs Pussycat - well here's a one. Fluffy wrecked Pussycat's blade and knocked off one of its caster wheels - but then Fluffy's drive broke down, even though its weapon kept spinning at full power. Bad luck, Fluffy.

    I was so satisfied to watch Fluffy smash 101 out of action for good in this Heat. 101 for me was always an overrated machine - I saw nothing special about it just because of it's cost-effectiveness. Its weaponry was certainly never effective at all, its pushing power wasn't anything new (or fun to watch in my opinion), and the machine only got far in any competition because of their opponents being either piss-easy or conveniently dying out because of something that was none of 101's doing. I certainly never would have put 101 into the First World Championship out of all the robots there were during Series 3.

      It wasn’t flashy but it was very reliable, but fluffy was impressive, hypnodisc in series 3 barely made a dent, (I know the disc wasn’t as strong then) but nobody ever smashed 101 the way fluffy did

    • @ryanodonovan9497
      @ryanodonovan9497 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@jordan9415 Hypno-Disc's flywheel was unfortunately under-powered when it met 101, and it didn't help that the disc's teeth back then were designed more so to cut and slash, as opposed to the later teeth that were blunter and had additional teeth within designed to dig in and rip away at the opposition. I'm still glad that it put a stop to 101's luck, though.
      And it was good to see Fluffy make up for that lack of destruction before with how it did.
      And I'm not denying how reliable 101 was mechanically - I just don't think it deserved as much praise as it got when it was only ever better than its opposition if it was pathetic, and not once did any of its opposition die out in battle (or in Panic Attack's case get pitted and King B Powerworks' case go out of control) because of any of 101's doing. I'm not so sure if 101 properly caused Centurion's immobilisation or not, since the immobilisation coincided with 101 pushing Centurion over the set of arena spikes that subsequently struck it. But I'm sure Mike Franklin didn't expect a win as easy as that, and Centurion was better during the rest of the battle. The only reason 101 even faced Centurion was because Overkill certainly died out through none of 101's doing when the latter never got any attacks in until Overkill unluckily had mobility trouble. The only time I can say that 101 got a genuinely well-earned victory was against Weld-Dor in the First World Championship. But again, the former only even got to that stage because Panic Attack accidentally steered into the pit in the previous round despite owning 101 in battle. It's why I enjoyed watching Razer crush the shit out of it later on. Again, I wouldn't have even had 101 as one of the English robots in there anyway when it had no proper credibility to compare with the others. I would've either given that spot to either Firestorm or Hypno-Disc, or sought out another foreign robot since there were already enough robots representing England in that tournament.

    • @jordan9415
      @jordan9415 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Ryan O'Donovan I agree with you, just one of those robots I had a soft spot for is 101, I’m disappointed it never got a real weapon, it could of implemented an axe, or maybe a vertical spinner.
      I think they also hyped it, because it was the first real successful bot with tracks, until suicidal tendencies came along that is.

    • @ryanodonovan9497
      @ryanodonovan9497 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@jordan9415 Suicidal Tendencies was on screen _before_ 101. And whilst it didn't get as far as the latter in Series 3, I'd still choose the former (I'm not even including any version of Suicidal Tendencies beyond Series 3) since it at least showed prowess from the start, had less fluked success than 101 and got beaten legitimately before such luck could strike again. Suicidal Tendencies started out by getting a far more legitimate win over Forklift's Revenge than 101 did against Overkill. It then got (what I felt was) a wrong judges' decision against Raizer Blade, since whilst I get that it was immobilised on the edge of the pit, Suicidal Tendencies was out of it first because of its right track being jammed. Then it legitimately got beaten by Mace 2 in the Heat final.

    It's a shame the Robot Wars are ended. Is anyone still involved in campaigning fighting robots in other tournaments such as BattleBots, who is interested in a radical state-of-the-art design to build from the ground up? I'd like to collaborate with a team that has the finances, engineering, electronics and other expertise to build the mightiest heavyweight 110 Kg class robot ever seen. No revelations about what type are made here, but consider this. To date, only some of the flipper robots like Chaos 2, Eruption, Apollo and Wheely Big Cheese appear to have punched above their weights and taken on house robots successfully, but these have only flipped some of them. Perhaps some spinner robots like Carbide or gyro robots like Typhoon 2 might have been able to do likewise and inflict damage on them, but I am not aware of any that actually did so and got away with it. I put this question to you: "Do you want to build a 110 Kg robot that will not only take on a house robot and damage it, but can actually attack and literally reduce ALL FIVE house robots to fragments of scrap metal in a one-against-five melee and survive virtually unscathed?" If so, contact me on my Facebook at kerry.coyle.73. Be warned that such a robot will not be cheap to construct and it will require attention to detail. You're looking at over $3000 for the motors and a similar expense for the batteries. Special armour, very light and extremely strong, impervious to impact, slash or stab - but not easy and very labour-intensive to make. It's like home-fabricated Chobham, but I've never seen a robot with seriously good armour. Apparently, none but I knows how to make it. 16 or 24 bhp power options, assuming I've correctly understood the motor specs. 25 or 50 mph speed options (definite, dependent on 1:2 or 1:1 gearing). Weapon speed 250 mph (the legal maximum) with 3 to 7 second spin-up time depending on design variables. Weapon heads forged like top-grade Japanese Katanas able to inflict colossal punishment without suffering any damage, yet still easily replaced. That's right. I know how to forge a Katana, the deadliest sword ever made by Man. Enough traction to shove Shunt out of the Sumo arena and enough destructive power to carve him into bits the size of Rubic's Cubes. Even Sir Killalot would not survive 60 seconds. Wide wheels impervious to damage. Designed to absorb powerful shocks without harming motors, gears or other components. Turning circle zero feet. Inherently self-righting by intrinsic design - needs no Srimech. Can escape pit traps, which no other robot has ever been designed to do. Completely fearless of axe bots, giant wheelie bots, flail bots, ram bots, stab bots, vertical spinner bots, crusher bots, lifter bots, dozer bots and house bots. Mostly impervious to the very best horizontal spinner bots, gyro bots and flipper bots. Can accurately target an opponent's weak spot and fragment the sturdiest weapons including tungsten carbide spinners (they're very hard, but actually quite brittle, so one only needs to know how to shatter them). Weapons have hardness closely approaching Tungsten Carbide, but without the brittleness. They don't shatter and they don't break. They don't even dull their edges very easily, either. That's advanced complex metallurgy not found in any existing robot. They'll carve through anything with the irresistible force of up to 400,000 Kg.m/s^2. Can literally shred titanium armoured bots in a couple of seconds, stainless steel in less, make 5 mm 6000 series aero/marine aluminium armour look like tinfoil, polycarbonate like cellophane and fibreglass, carbon fibre & Kevlar look like puff pastry. Good enough to hack through 10 mm hardened steel in mere seconds. Heavily proofed against breakdown with inbuilt redundancies. RC antenna cannot be disabled. Critical internal components all well protected deep within a spacious armoured hull. Almost impossible to flip - requires several tons of force to make the slightest impression, but not even the slimmest wedge-shaped flipper bot can get in under it to make a flip without being destroyed, unless the driver is careless and lets him in. Even then in the worst case scenario, a powerful flip can be partially turned aside to reduce its effectiveness. Yeah, I know. Sounds too good to be true. That would be for you to find out. No, I am not looking to sell the design or make money out of it. I actually want notoriety as its Designer to write up in my resume. I want to get with a team that is well enough financed to afford the expensive cost of building and campaigning it, with a good supply of spare parts. My contribution is the design and directing its construction. One more thing to consider. I presently cannot travel, as I am a fulltime student in the throes of a late life career change. Otherwise, I wouldn't mind mind doing the driving, now and then. I am a superior tactician and strategist, skilled with soldering iron or MIG welder. Also, I require proper public credit for the design and I have a name for this robot, which I require to be used and no other name. I don't care about the Team's name which can remain as an existing one, but the robot's name is mine alone to bestow. It's a very catchy and very appropriate, but unique name. What sayest thou, Roboteer? Dost thou crave Infamy and Victory? Canst thou afford it?
