What caused the dust geyser at 14:00 in? Looked like your filler just blew straight out of the hole? Also, the dust cloud off to the right a few seconds later is presumably a crack in the rock letting your bang out?
This was a hole that did not get loaded because it was closest to the previous shot and got damaged during the first blast and as a result it no longer went full depth because of the rock movement. It just served as a chimney to let some of the gasses out.
after watching the slo motion and your explanation Dave i understand why those cracks appeared outside the line now. It amazing just how much gas is produce.

Great use of the inverted orange cones to keep loose dirt from falling back into the freshly drilled bore holes. They also act like funnels and help when loading the charges into the holes. Looks like ANFO being poured into the holes. It's perfect for trench blasting in hard rock. Slightly slower Detonation Velocities than other HE, so It 'pushes' harder. Still plenty of shock and the Brisance is adequate to shatter rock quite well. It's the Explosive of choice for large quarry type operations. It can be bulk delivered in slurry form and is cost effective compared to other types of HE. *_Fun Fact: When filled with ANFO, a blasthole 400 mm (about 16 inches) in diameter and 7.5 metres (about 25 feet) deep can develop about one billion horsepower. When you see a large quarry blast and thousands of tons of rock are moved forward a hundred feet, you are seeing 'horsepower' on an unimaginable scale._* Dave, great job in doing everything right; right hole diameter, right hole depth, right explosive loaded, right use of delays, and right material used in stemming top of hole. Didn't see a single charge break through top of hole violently. All the energy was directed to right places. Nothing is wasted, no misfires, and no flying rock debris. Not sure if they use Hard Rock trenchers there. In the States there are contractors with huge rigs with hundreds of horsepower cutting or grinding trenches through bedrock. They have a series of Carbide Tips on a continuous belt that rotates like a standard trencher. They have belts of various widths and frame arms of various lengths. They can cut a 1 meter wide by 5 meter deep trench in hard rock no problem. Your geology is unique with random placement of Granite boulders. Mechanical trenchers may not work there. Blasting is more fun to watch anyway. *_I love watching trench blasting and wonder if I can outrun the series of explosions._*
In watching all of your videos I think i see a great way to increase your productivity. Drill the holes farther apart like you do in the forest. This seems to work the best. Very rarely do you ever have to reblast. Plus you won't waist all of the time drilling those extra holes. It will also decrease all of the wasted time digging the rocks out. I don''t understand why an experienced small business owner like youself could have missed this where as I, with absolutly no experince at all in the field can see this. Lucky for you I watch your videos and can help to guide your career. Follow my advice and I can even decrease your living expenses... What could possibly go wrong??????

A word about ditches. Once they get more than waist deep have the operator flare it out at a 45° angle. Working in the dry is fairly safe but dirt is heavy. It will squish the life out of my favorite blaster. The digger knows better. I've had to ask a few times and never had a guy complain. They just get sloppy.

Dave, I see you used the big drill how far did you have to go to satisfy requirements, and I know you have mentioned it before! But how do you stagger shots over a distance like here.
Good question. The cheapest way is to use det cord and tie all the holes together so that they fire all at time same time, the down side of this is that the ground vibration is often very big and people complain, you may even cause building damage! The solution is to fire the holes sequentially, it cost more but another benefit is the this method also gives much better fragmentation for easier digging.
I don't mind using it Peter. it is physically punishing but like anything you harden up to it and I have good upper back torso muscle development as a result. I do balk a bit when it is really hot weather, especially when the rig could have done it in 10 minutes.

Hi, I have a physics question. If you are standing next to the blasting path say half way along, do you get the classic doppler effect pitch rise & fall as it goes past? A quick mental simulation experiment I just did says NO as theres nothing actually moving past you, just a series of still events aranged so that it gives the illusion of a single object moving past. Have you noticed what actually happens in reality? Cheers Daniel.
Good question Dano, just been having a think about it and by my calculation the Doppler shift would indeed be noticeable. The pulse repetition rate is 40Hz and at 2 holes per meter that puts the speed at 72KpH so assuming you are standing right beside the trench to minimize any cosign error the apparent Brrrrrrrt frequency oncoming would be 48.4Hz and 33Hz when it has passed. I have never noticed such a phenomena so you are probably correct... but I never stand right beside the trench for best effect. I'm really going to have to test this out with an old phone camera right up close.
I helped a blaster once do stumping at his neighbours place. He asked her where she wanted the stumps piled? He set the charges and he piled the stumps where she wanted. Quite a site to watch him do that. One question; you work with great skill but can you blow out the candle without denting the candle stick? Just kidding good work!
Not as expensive as it would have been if they spent 2 weeks with a huge machine with a breaker and failed very badly - like what happened just around the corner.

There is 2 holes per meter and they are all connected with 25ms surface delay clips between each hole.
How much dirt did you put on top of your third shot seemed to really keep the blast under control

The left over plastic is not det cord (det cord gets consumed in the blast) but signal tube and I collect as much of it as I can.

I liked the fountain of dust from one end of the row and the cloud that escaped from the side . Guessing the pressure found an easier way out.

Good spotting, I helped a guy with a shot like this once, a very deep one, so much gas came out that it lifter the bitumen on the road near by.
