  • My grandfather had a Land Rover when he was in Africa and I think it would be neat to fix up an old Land Rover as a fun trail truck. Today Ill do a walk around on this unfinished project I decided to take on.

    Also if you're keeping the rover transfer case its super easy to put land cruiser axles in as they're passenger drop and fit nicely, and you get lockers, disc brakes etc.

      You can put Toy 8" centers straight into the LR axle housings, if you want. A lot less work. Or you can just build the LR centers and they are as strong as built Toys. The axles he has are disc brake already.

    Im actually building a series 3 109. Mines getting a 300tdi 2.5 liter out a 97 discovery not very powerful though. Its getting 105 series land cruiser diffs wich are nearly identical to the 80 series land cruiser diffs pretty popular over hear in Australia. It'll get 37s and im using the disco automatic and lt230. One word of advice if you do end up using the lt230 just make sure you check what ratios you have in there as a lot where NOT 1:1 IN high range they were higher ratio (geared lower) as they had something like 3.7:1 in factory diffs. Other than that there is a lot available for them and are pretty stout unit. Cant wait to see the build it'll give me some more push to get mine on /off the road.

    Doorman 2.8. Jeep commonrail. Inline 6 would be awesome but you will need to move the grill forward. It looks awesome when you do by the way. No LS. No cummins. Normal folks can't afford one. We use salvage yard engines or buy complete donar trucks. There are tins of really good wheeling inline 6 cylinders for 300, jeep 258 and 4.0. Several fj40 straight 6's including the 4.2 vortex monster. Consider the 302 ford. It's very compact has a fr8nt dist (no beating in the firewall) and can be had with junkyard zf-5spd t-18 or np435.

    So many options! Personally I would put a military leaf spring chassis back under it, (2" lift built into the hangers) with rocky mountain parabolics, keep the TDI engine (if that is what it is), fit a part time 2wd conversion to the transfer box (Ashcroft transmissions) and run 33's with a Dana 60 axle out of a series III 109. Then change my mind halfway through the process... And then again...

  • @huntershumber5450

    Awesome Land Rover! I would say if I owned it I would put a Dana 60 in the back and probably a Dana 50 in the front from a Super Duty. If you can get the Land Rover diesel running without spending too much on it I would say that would be the best bet. Can’t wait to see how it turns out!

    Put some Waggy D44's under it, 35's, and some sort of i6 (AMC 258/4.0, Ford 300, etc). And then a matching t-case and trans and call it good. Well, minus the giant amount of wiring and lights and everything else that needs to be handled.

    I named my '61 "Edward" after the friend that left it to me. There were some 110s made in Morocco that used a BMW straight six. Those things can really scream. Went to a dyno day and some one pulled in with an SII diesel. It layed down 25 HP and 32 ft lbs of torque and burned about a quart of oil.

  • @rongray8416
    @rongray8416 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Get the diesel up and running better axles maybe straighten out those body panels tires like you said 35s or 37s make it a coffee getting over lander/ mid range wheeler oh and some rock sliders (prob home brew ones since I dont know if any are already made for LR's)...keep the coils though, while not correct for an old land rover will def. make for a more comfortable ride given the trucks expected use (and a bit more trail flex)

  • @barryt6277
    @barryt6277 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    If you are staying with a Rover engine then you need one of the V8's or a bare minimum TD5. Although all of the body, except the firewall, is aluminum it's still a very heavy truck. Either fit an overdrive unit, which will bold straight on to the LT230 of at least have a 6 speed tranny. The 2A 109's, which is what it was when it left the factory, usually had Salisbury rear axle (not the rover one) these axles are very good. The other thing is that the ride will be so much better with coils.

    Parabolic leaf springs ride nice under a Series truck too.
    Series LRs did come with a 2.6l petrol straight six from the factory, so they will fit.
    The 200tdi and 300tdi 2.5l all fit and very strong and economical. Found in old LR Discovery's. And there's a 2.8l variant out there.

    I'd suggest the larger Vortech 4200 inline 6 version for more powah if it'll fit, but the inline 5 definitely makes for a more interesting swap

  • @iamblaineful
    @iamblaineful 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    My first choice would be a Mercedes straight 5 or 6cyl diesel(pick your OM flavor and adapter support). Second is a Chevy 4.3 v6, tons of them have been swapped into old Land Rovers, truly a popular swap in these rigs...cheap and reliable, which neither were Land Rover's strong suit. Last would be a Cummins R2.8.....love the motor, but cost is a tough pill to swallow, but it has a warranty. The wagon begs for a diesel, but the most budget approachable and relatable to your viewers is the tried and true Chevy 4.3 v6. ...or just be crazy and keep the factory little diesel and swap the transfer case to something rational to get a center rear, and driver front pumpkin, and that opens up a lot of good axle options. I like coils on 37s, regardless of engine choice. I love the wagons, this is gonna be a very fun build.

    Hey Fred I am a follower of pewe and David from way back have 5 jeeps including a vec 2a. I also have a 67 rover. I would say not to just toss in Dana stuff and a t5. Part of the fun of a rover is using odd ball stuff. The ultimate axles for this are Volvo c303 units. My rover back in the day got fj40 disc brake axles and a Scotty's adapter 305 conversion. Mine has the ultra cool Fairey overdrive along with a 2a box and case make it insane cool. The 215 Buick v8 is my period swap for my rig which stays inline with the 305 and it's maybe 120 horse power keeping the 2a box alive. Last, tall skinny tires only. Q78s or 11.00r16s would be my choice because they are rare and hard to find. My rig is sitting on 34x9.50 pizzas. You can see it in the only public video on my page about my 2A

    Engine: Put in a 2F engine and axles from an FJ40 and call it Land Crover - paint it light blue!

    5.9 or 6.7 would be fun, but pretty heavy for the front of a rock crawler. An OM606 turbo Mercedes would be good (and weighs about the same as a small block), but you would need to move the grill forward for space unless you just like cutting up the firewall and floor. Stick with the 89-90 OM606, it has the Bosch mechanical injection pump (M style pump vs P-pump) on certain models. An OM617 turbo would work also, but is shorter in length (5 cylinder) than the OM606. OM617 is less refined that the OM606 but is far simpler and usually cheaper. If you are enamored with the length of the 5 cylinder, Mercedes also makes an OM602 5 cylinder turbo with a Bosch injection pump. If you want to dare to be different, you could get an air-cooled Deutz diesel, available in 4 and 6 cylinder versions.

    The 1960's Landrover was a leaf sprung truck alot of people make abit of a mungrul truck up by using Discovery 1 and RangeRover classic's cos the coil springs are so much better ride quality in this type of truck over here in the UK there are afew company's fitting LS'S and Cummins and changing axles aswell the size tyres it is on now iv seen brake halfshafts and cv's you've got better availability of stronger axles over there so I'd change them an engine swap that is getting more and more popular now is the merc OM606 & 605 and the BMW 330D straight 6 using both manual and automatic gearboxes or the P38 RangeRover 4.6 V8 again using manual and automatic gearboxes and the LT230 Transfer box which is quite strong

    Isuzu 4BD1T maybe a nice choice and keep the LT230 transfer case or maybe the gearbox too (LT77 or R380). Land Cruiser axles are offset so there no problem with LT230 case, or Dana 60 which is basically the same with Land Rover salisbury axle. Tire wise i think 35 inch is big enough for series 2.

    Cheap would be a Chevy v6, or SBC. Not so cheap a Toyota Diesel. Stock R.R. parts are pricy and as the Aussies say "If you want to go out to the bush, take a Landrover, if you want to make it back, take a Toyota".

    See if you can get it reliable as is. This way we get many episodes of upgrades, because...I'm selfish. Would a Rubicon 4 door JK frame slide under there? I love the R2.8 as an option, if you don't get the motor with the frame. Drivetrain solved.

    Nissan y61axles if you can get hold of them have offset diffs that will line up with the lt230 transfer box outputs and are plenty strong enough, also I've heard they mount to landrover radius arms too. Loads of guys running 40" treps with standard shafts on those axles with no problems. The lt230 is a good strong transfer box, quite a few ratio options for high range from 1:1, 1:2, 1:4 & 1:6. And there's even compnies that can supply crawler gear sets for low range too. If you have the Landrover 200 or 300tdi engine they're a brilliant reliable engine if looked after.

    Axles - Fj80 for more gear options than the rover but still high clearance and offset.
    Engine- Short engine bay means it’s tough to retain the recessed grill with a larger 6cyl so 2.8tgv /200 or 300Tdi is what I’d recommend.
    Trans - r380 trans and lt230 case. 4:1 and 5:1 gearing as well as an under drive can be sourced for the LT case.
    35” tires are kind or the limit without really limiting uptravel or rubbing on inside of tub.
    I have a 1960 2a 109 pu on a stretched disco 1 chassis using full disco drivetrain as my daily driver. Gears lockers and Ashcroft shafts are a must if retaining rover axles. Rover v8 is fine with a good rad but tough to package so I use later defender grill and hood.

    I like simple so it is,easy to find parts. Wagoneer Dana 44's, GM truck 5.3, 4L60e (because Dave needs an automatic), Dana 300' and keep the coils if it is already set up. I know it seems like everyone does an LS, , but if not that, then a Land Rover V8 like in Jimmy's flatie.

    Considering the engine bay in these is pretty cramped, I'd stick with a 4cyl. An inline 6 does fit but it's tight. Personally I'd use the Cummins R2.8 like tubesock, NV4500 5 speed and either a Toyota or Atlas T-Case. Axle wise I'd probably run Dana 44s on coils using the Land Rover system.
    One thing you need to do is get rid of those rocker panels, they serve no purpose and were only used on the "Delux" models, standard on all station wagons and optional on others.
    Fun fact, the rear door/tailgate was used all the way till the end of production of the tradional Defender, including the gate latch handle! I'd seriously recommend getting a swing out spare wheel carrier and avoid putting the spare on the door, or the hood for that matter. Especially if you intend to use bigger/heavier wheels and use it hard. I've seen Land Rovers pull the door apart with heavy wheels hanging off it.

    I would say put a Land Rover 300tdi into it with an r380 gearbox and the lt230 transfer you have. It’s a rock solid combo. I like the r2.8 option but it depends if you have a money to blow.

    So glad you don't want to put in a ls. I totally agree with no 4bt or 6bt. R2.8 would probably be the most logical choice but I'm hoping for either a all mechanical diesel, Chevy 292, or something else that's super basic and has a vintage vibe. The all aluminum Buick/olds/rover v8s would be really cool.

    Sorry, but it sounds like you just want another American pick-up but you want to disguise it under a classic Land Rover Series II. 35 inch to 40 inch tires...why?
