    I also love that it used to be up in Fort Bragg on the California Western, and still wearing it’s CW paint.

    I was always wondered what happened to #62. I'm glad she found another home after California Western sold her. Anyways very nice video, keep up the good work.

      It's easy to forget that the 62 is there, considering that it's not their primary runner. It was just good luck for me that it ended up being on the big train.

    Great knowledge about the HEP box car, beautiful consist, can picture it on the high iron with flags flying!

      Thanks. All of that info is what I was told by Napa Valley RR employees. Some people don't like the boxcar, but I don't think it's that much of a deterrent. It's still one of, if not the most elegant passenger train in California in my opinion. Thanks for viewing!

    This is the first time I've seen the Centercab and 62 in service. I believe the only other instance I've seen the 62 run is while it was on the California Western, but regardless, always nice to see an ex SP Alco running

    • @Alwaystrains
      @Alwaystrains 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Indeed it was great to see them. 62 powered the Quattro Vino for the first week the train ran, but they were quick about getting the 65-tonner painted up and ready for action. I owe credit to the road foreman of engines for advising me that 62 would be pinch-hitting for 71. Though I believe that's all they use it for now, is as a yard switcher or as a back-up. Thanks for viewing!

      Late responding, but the way they're being conservative with the P3 on 62 almost makes it sound like a Caltrain P2 since the last chime isn't sounding.

    some old looking power unit in this video; that was a werid paint job on the unit at time stamp 14:41. some very good secenery in this video. thanks for an outstanding video.

      Thanks John. GE 25 tonner, MLW FPA-4's, and an ALCO RS11 are all seen in the video. NVRR 62 (RS11) is actually former California Western, and SP before that. The scheme it's currently wearing is its old Cal Western scheme.

    The train, as we would say in Australia, is beginning to look "like a dog's breakfast". The HEP boxcar ruins the continuity of the equipment; ditto the short box-car with the 3 arched windows.

    Probably one of the earliest instances where a random box car (possibly for power) is sandwiched between the locomotives.

    Nice video, very cool action with the center cab unit and the Alcos. What's up with the box car between the two FPA4s?

    • @Alwaystrains
      @Alwaystrains 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! The boxcar is a back-up HEP generator. Before the external generator, the train used the HEP generators in the locomotives. They discontinued that practice because it requires workers to connect and disconnect the power cables at run-around's, which is highly dangerous. After coming to that conclusion, they built the "Grappa" car, which is an HEP car located towards the end of the train next to the dome car. However, the Grappa has a tendency to overheat in summer months. So the HEP-equipped boxcar in between the engines is the answer. It plays back-up when the Grappa overheats, and it just happens that the only logical place to put it is in between the engines. Hope that answers your question, and thanks for viewing!

      Yes, diesel-electric. Diesel prime mover that turns a generator to produce electricity.

    Do you know why there is a boxcar in between the locos?

    • @Alwaystrains
      @Alwaystrains 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      As a matter of fact I do. I was told that the car is used for HEP. While the FPA-4s do have HEP units on board, connecting the cables during run-arounds poses a danger to the brakeman or conductor who is handling the move. There is an HEP car about half way into the consist, but it overheats during warm weather, thus the boxcar is used as an auxillary unit, and the only logical place to put it is between the locos

    What is the boxcar sandwiched between the two engines for?

    • @Alwaystrains
      @Alwaystrains 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The boxcar is used as a back-up HEP generator. Long story short, using the HEP power from the locomotives is dangerous as it requires crews to handle the high-voltage power cables. The train has a primary HEP car, but the car has a tendency to overheat, so the boxcar is there to keep the HEP power running when the primary car does overheat.

    • @trainzguy2472
      @trainzguy2472 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well then why don't they fix their primary HEP generator? It would be cheaper than running two and it would also make the train lighter without the extra generator.
