- I re-uploaded this excerpt because has more video quality, so you can see Caballe torturing the poor Gasdia and you can also see the then young Ramon Vargas as Gelsomino, without beard.
This is the Vienna 1988 production of Il Viaggio a Reims (Gasdia, Cuberli, Valentini Terrani, Caballe, Lopardo, Merritt, Furlanetto, Raimondi, Chausson, under Abbado). This is a encore played after the end of the opera, with much more fun than the inside-work "pezzo".
With such spead and technique, Rossini sounds imidiate and spontaneous. The singers - woof! Fantastic. Its a once in a lifetime experience.

Ein Chapeau bas! wird dieser göttlichen Inszenierung nicht gerecht. In den 80er habe ich diese Aufführung im Fernsehen gesehen und bis heute lässt sie mich nicht aus ihrem Bann. Vieles ist über diese Aufführung gesagt worden und ich habe diesem nichts Weiteres hinzuzufügen. Nur so viel: Dieses Gesamtkunstwerk ist zum Niederknien. Und doch: Chapeau bas!

I saw this on television when I was only twenty years old. This version of this opera made a lasting impression on me - the cast was clearly having fun, and the music itself is also so joyful, so thanks for sharing this !

Unfortunately there is not an official DVD for this production. You can find a bel canto society DVD but you have to ask if this encore is included because long time ago I purchased from them a VHS record of this precise staging and it was not included.
I love this performance. It puts a smile on my face...everytime!

They were always having fun ( was there at all the 1992 performances ) ,but the last one was especially fun. They d play practical jokes on each other , and you can see even Abbado can’t stop smiling. The bubbliest production ever.
I think is because of Caballe is clowning around with Abbado. She sings "Abbado, abbado, ecco una lettera, venuta da Milano" instead of "Signore, signore ecco una lettera, venuta da Parigi". It´s silly, but was unexpected I supposed. There´s a lot of things Caballé did int that recording that we cannot see, but everybody laugh at it. As Caballé´s voice was declining and she could not face Madama Cortese´s coloratura up, she opted to do that part as a buffo one, so everybody got fun with that.
Es mi compositor favorito por la sencillez y vivacidad de las melodías. Uno se pregunta por qué Elisabetta, La Donna del Lago, esta ópera y Maometto restaron olvidadas. Pero gracias al renacimiento, contamos con muchas grabaciones y presentaciones en el mundo. Por ejemplo, la Pietra del Paragone originó dos DVD al mismo tiempo el año pasado con similar calidad, una comedia tiene mucho que ver con lo que lograría Rossini con sus tres comedias famosas. Que bueno que han disfrutado este video

I bought this video in VHS format from Belcanto society, but there's not encore in that VHS. I found it in a video that I downloaded from Emule.
En estudio no hay más grabaciones, por lo menos oficiales. Lo que hay es un par de DVD, uno en Barcelona u otro creo que en Madrid pero con la Opera de Mariinsky, ambos con una producción fuera de época. Aquí en youtube hay varios fragmentos de la opera de Mariinsky. Haría falta otra grabación en estudio sin Raimondi, Ramey, Dara y Valentini Terrani, para ver como es un Viaggio sin ellos (pues ellos aparecen en ambas grabaciones de DG y Sony)

Era la sera del 16. Non sapevo tra l'altro che Kunde fosse così travolgente sulla scena. Imperioso! Scattava a destra e a manca tutto truce... Un po' comico invece Astianatte sbattuto a destra e a manca (per quante repliche l'hanno sollevato per le braccia?). La regia nel complesso però mi è piaciuta molto. (non come quella dell'equivoco, con aspirapolvere, pistole, paperetta, corsetto da bondage... Ho capito che la comicità del libretto non è proprio sottile, ma...) Ti piace la Barcellona poi?

I tried to buy through yahoo shop, but I was swindled. So I could purchase it through belcanto society a VHS recording, but this encore is cut. So I downloaded from emule, but I lasted one month in that process.

La Anderson?! ma è LA Donna del Lago!!! è fenomenale. Insomma, un cast piuttosto fiacco... (il duetto Arsace-Assur del secondo atto dev'essere stato meraviglioso; l'ho sentito con Horne-Rouleau e Ramey-Larmore, ma non i due dei assieme). Hai registrazioni della Barcellona da consigliare? Io l'ho vista come Tamerlano (Bajazet di Vivaldi a Venezia, dove vivo: pubblico indifferente) e Calbo (Maometto II a Pesaro: super applausi) e non mi ha convinto per nulla. Insomma, variazioni molto fuori luogo
Sì, farei fatica a vedere un duca che (magari) diverrà impeccabile vocalmente restando però minaccioso quanto una vestaglia. A Lindoro, Tonio, Almaviva scusiamo più volentieri una recitazione un po' inerte, no? Siragusa mi pareva sicurissimo, pulito, preciso e fresco, forse poco eroico ma tutto il resto integrava che basta! Piuttosto avvincente, insomma. Mi ha anche fatto ridere il modo in cui è uscito a predere gli applausi, mandando gran baci e salutando commosso. Tenore-divo!!!

Pensa che è il primo anno che mi decido ad andare al ROF. In compenso ho optato per una maratoncella Ermione-concerto di Brownlee-Equivoco stravagante-Viaggio a Reims-Maometto II. Sfortunatamente sono tornato a casa prima del concerto della Ciofi. Ammetto di avere sdegnosamente evitato Florez, che però prima o poi DEVO andare a vedere; solo non ho simpatia per le mani costantemente ad acquasantiera. Immagino che dal vivo sarà tutto carisma e saggezza interpretativa ;). Tu hai avuto la fortuna?

A performance much superior to the Pesaro performance of 1984. Here the singer show how much they enjoy the opera and its staging. In Pesaro they look bored and the stage is full of unuseful accessories which prevent any real dynamic acting.

acuti finali nemmeno stesse cantando un Verdi da parodia(Tam), urlacci e brutti gravi (Cal)... Però sembra tutto tranne una diva supponente, quindi magari è solo un brutto periodo, vocalmente.
