I was just as much of a Shrek fanatic and collector as you until I had a big move and lost my collection. Keep this channel going, you're keeping all the positive spirit of Shrek alive and preserving great history. No memes just appreciation for a great franchise.
I truly think Shrek is one of the all-time fantasy greats. The fact that three of the five films are pretty much considered timeless classics easily puts the series on the same wavelength of Star Wars or even Lord of the Rings. Shrek is truly an epic and I’m happy to preserve its legacy! 😁
That crossbow gun from the wave 3 "Outta My Swamp" Shrek is actually a repaint/remold of an accessory that came with an Archer figure from the Small Soldiers line in 1998.
i've noticed that this bigger fiona in 8:30 has the same pose that the mini fiona that comes with the the far far away castle along with puss shrek and human fiona and this gingy at 6:22 , is not actuall new, the gingy is from the far far away mini figures (the one where armored shrek, human fiona, 3 little pigs and donkey comes in, along this same gingy) im only missing human shrek and horse donkey to complete the hasbro collection 🥺
That’s a good catch with the Fiona. It’s common for companies to re-use tooling so this seems to confirm the figure as being 99% official. I’m still very curious if it was officially released or not.
Ah the Macy’s Shrek plush! He’s cute but super annoying…he’s top heavy and WILL NOT stay on any surface without falling. Notice how I tucked his arm in the shelf itself. That’s the only way to get that dude to stand! 😅
I had Fiona, Puss in Boots, and Donkey as the Stallion as a kid. I didn’t get the Shrek and Donkey from this line because I had the McFarlane Shrek and Donkey, and 8 year old me didn’t see the point of having two of those characters. NEVER saw the human Shrek figure, and didn’t know it even existed until today.
It’s interesting you bring up the small scale hasbro was trying to push with this line. When Hasbro got the marvel license they abandoned the 6 inch line for a couple of years in favor of a 4 inch toy line
Hasbro plays these weird games with scales. Marvel went from 4” to 6” to even 2.5” (Guardians and Ultron if anyone remembers those strange toys.) and then finally 6” again…I think they must get a lot of turnover in upper management. Everyone has their own “vision” of the brand. It’s a miracle Star Wars stuck to 3.75 for as long as it did. I swear Hasbro does this just to mess with collectors…🤔
I never heard of Shrek toys at all despite loving the movies when they came out, until I found your channel. I love videos that go over the history of the lines in depth. Great job!
I definitely had football donkey as a kid and I live in upstate ny. I remember using the blue football for my nfl figures/statues. I also remember the towel on donkeys back being made of this material that would rub off on my fingertips.
Wow just yesterday I saw your Shrek 1 figure history and was wishing for a breakdown of the Shrek 2 figures and well here it is less than 24 hours later for me, dude your awesome. Hope to see more videos like these for the rest of the DreamWorks Shrek movies.
I actually remembered owning both the original hasbro Shrek & Donkey figures back in the day! I really wished I’ve kept some of these figures nowadays! Never knew they made a Prince Charming bowling pin figure 😅
3:04 I think it's not supposed to be in-scale with the other figures, rather it's meant to be a "Life Size" version of the character for you to play with.
Trolls 2016 having the Shrek 2 marketing princples is probably why I like that era the most. Also thank you for taking documentation of this era of Shrek
Trolls has definitely had the best merch for any Dreamworks movie. Great variety of dolls, figures, playsets and even LEGO. Makes sense since the Trolls movies are based off a toy license.
Tfw the kids’ meal toys are better than the premium action figures. Actually this happened with most of the Shrek toylines 😅 (Shrek 4 definitely has better Happy Meal figures than Playmates sad offering.)

I would imagine that Shrek 1 marketing and merchandise demographic was more aimed towards 7 to 12 year old kids meanwhile Shrek 2 and 3 was aimed more towards 4 to 8 year old kids but then when Shrek 4 came out the merchandise was almost non-existent probably because of the failure of Shrek 3 and retail stores were busy with Toy Story 3 merchandise since it came out a month later and had more hype than Forever After did.
This is true, the intent for Shrek was always an older audience more in line with what Dreamworks previous films were going for. (El Dorado, Antz, and Prince of Egypt.) A lot of Shrek's original marketing was aimed at teens, including the original XBOX game even receiving a 'T" rating. Given Shrek's crass humor I'm sure Dreamworks was taken by surprise that the film had such a huge audience reaction. The Toy Story bit is interesting. Both it and Forever After came out so closely that Dreamworks may have undercooked the merch out of fear of competition with Pixar. But if anything else I bet the lackluster sales of Shrek the Third merch also played a big part.
I was just born the year Shrek 2 came out so I was never able to get these unfortunately. I can’t wait for you to talk about shrek 3 though, as those toys are the ones I grew up with

Hi friend, not a huge shrek fan as much as I am just an action figure fan and collector, but I enjoyed hearing you talk about your collection! Gotta ask, what is the name of the black shelves directly behind you? Would love to get some of that type for my collection!
Well the one to the left is a basic walmart tool shelf. They're made of plastic and usually sell fior $20-30. As for the nice wooden one...I wish I knew myself! My family has had it for years and I've always wanted to buy another.
I agree it’s sooo frustrating especially when certain characters are only in one scale. One that frustrated me as a kid was TRON Legacy. All the fun characters and vehicles were only in the small scale. I also remember that Thundercats reboot being at my local TRU around the same time I was collecting TRON. It looked like an amazing line of toys. Shame it didn’t catch on.
All I have is the dragon. If I had seen the Noble Steed figure, I definitely would have bought it, but I don't recall seeing it. After all the trouble I had trying to find the McFarlane dragon, I bought the Hasbro dragon as soon as I saw it. That Handsome Shrek, what the heck? It can't ride Noble Steed properly? He's going to be awfully sore if he has to to ride standing in the stirrups the whole time lol!
Bwhaha That’s definitely classic “Hasbro Riding” Most Star Wars figures “air chair” on their speeder bikes. I have no idea what’s up with the Handsome Shrek figure especially since he’s much larger than the other figures. It’s honestly like somebody made a mistake in the sculpting department.
OMG I have this football Donkey! the ears are a little messed up and I lost... most of the accessories but I still have the donkey figure and the babies donkey/dragons
The only time I saw any of these in a store was like one time at Dollar General and while I kind of wanted them, I didn't end up getting them because even as a 9 yr old, I could tell these looked significantly cheaper than the first movies toys. I believe they at least had Donkey, I think Fiona as well. While the McFarlane toys are the clear winner, I do really appreciate how unique these are and the surprising amount of features they put into these. Nowadays, toy companies are far too busy trying to make figures as accurate and articulated as possible, that they forget to actually make kids toys. I think the closest toys out there that even slightly resembles toys like this are from Jakks and even those are nowhere near as creative and unique as these here. Shrek is a franchise whose toy line started out way too good and got increasingly worse with each movie.
I 100% agree with everything you said here! I really hope a company likes Jakks or Jazwares gets the Shrek license. All we’ve had since 2010 are various Funko figure lines. Purely collector focused and zero toy fun.
I love these Shrek restrospectives even though I have never bought any of them( I just love merchandise history even fron things I don't personally buy), but I do have some opinions on some of your points. 1.Carded toys: Has someone that unboxes his figures and keeps them loose, Hasbro toys are generally the one you should keep in box, some of the new figures break the moment you unbox them and some old figures had the unfortunate fate of being made with cheap plastic( gold plastic being the most common) which makes the figures disentigrate over the slightest touch which means carding them is the only option for them. 2. The villain problem: This was the toylines biggest weakness in both cases. The first movie only had Farquaad, which the whole joke is that he is pathetic, which for a kid does not make him into a cool villain to fight or buy and the second movie skimmed over both of it's villains for different reasons: Prince Charming similar to Farquaad was too pathetic for a child to have interest in and Fairy godmother...well she was a girl and we both know that those never sell in the boy toy isle so Hasbro skipped on her due to that, which sucked because she was the only compotent bad guy that your figures could fight. Dragon as cool has a figure she is, sadly could not fill that role either cause she is part of the good guys, which meant that most kids would not see her has a villain or make their figures fight her cause she is the heroes friend and in donkey's case his wife. This problem was not in other toylines at the time, Spiderman had the green goblin and Doc Ok and Star Wars had the separatist forces, including General Griveous, who was so popular that his figures used to be sold out everywhere due to the demand for him. Strangely, the one movie that 100% could have made it has a toyline was the movie that never got one. Puss in boots 2, whose villains were incredibly imposing and great to have your heroes fight, especially death who most kids would have bought just by how cool and epic he is.
You make some very good points here. Hasbro makes cheap CHEAP toys and I hope that if we ever get another Shrek figure like that another company gets the license. Shrek as an IP will always be a hard sell for action figures because it’s a flat-comedy. You’re right, villains are usually pretty goofy. There’s definitely exceptions, like Death, Jack and Jill and even the witches from Forever After but for the most part all the iconic classic Shrek figures are pretty ridiculous. I’ll likely make a video on this soon but if I were designing a new 6” Shrek figure line, I’d do Death as a “Build a Figure”. He’s a really enticing character that would help sell some of those “dud” figures. (I.e. Looking at you, Fairy Godmother. 👀 )
@@austin_the_brimstone That is actually a pretty brilliant idea.
