    DOC is a decade overdue in delivering essential work to keep this forest alive. Under poor management and lack of leadership we are witnessing thousands of centuries old trees die.
    We can turn this around we have the tools we just need the will.
    Please let me know what you think of this film in the comments.

    It's a national disgrace that our Department of Conservation has no sense of priority or commitment to protecting our rare and iconic Northland Kauri forests. Would Te Papa or the Auckland Art Gallery let rats run riot in national collections and do nothing for 10 years???? The Northland Regional Manager is out of her depth and needs to be replaced by someone worthy of the position, someone the public can trust to actually do the job of protecting the forest. DOC needs to be held accountable for the state of our forests with each being given an annual WOF by an independent group of ecologists and DOC judged on timely delivery of control.

    • @kiwiwriter

      It's not DOC in charge there so stop calling them out.

    • @stephenking4170
      @stephenking4170 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@kiwiwriter You are totally misinformed on this point. The Waipoua Forest , like all DOC managed forests in Northland are owned by the people of New Zealand and DOC is legally responsible for their protection and management. There are special relationship/consultation agreements with several iwi in some of these forests, including Waipoua, but this is in place to foster co operation between iwi and the crown. It does not exist to stop basic conservation work or remove DOC's responsibility to deliver protection for NZ. But at Waipoua, the local iwi do understand the issues and sound conservation management and there is already support there for aerial 1080. Elders there have seen the benefits from previous operations and the cost of doing nothing.
      There is NO excuse for DOC leaving the forest abandoned for 8 years and being 10 years overdue with serious iwi consultation and effective possum control. DOC needs to be called out because our forests need professional competent management and work done on time. The skeletons and dying trees in the forest are testament to DOC's failure to deliver on fundamental duty. DOC is absolutely responsible for the protection of our public conservation lands. They are the only government agency charged with this duty. The regional manager needs to do her job.

    • @stephenking4170
      @stephenking4170 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well over 90% of Waipoua Forest is owned by the Crown and managed by DOC and the balance by local iwi or conservation trusts. Both the iwi and conservation trusts support the wise use of 1080 so currently DOC is the hold up. Dragging the chain and letting the ancient Totara and thousands of kohekohe suffer another winter of browse and trees being pushed into premature old age, never to recover, or dying is totally irresponsible. DOC should have been ready years ago and should work to timeframes that work for the forest and deliver on their national duty. The forest and NZ can't be let down by DOC any longer. What has happened to the forest through bureaucratic ineptitude borders on criminal negligence. It certainly is nothing like competence, nothing to be proud of. We need DOC managers who are proud of their responsibility and competent to deliver.

    The biggest destroyer of NZ’s forests are the timber and agricultural industries, replacing diverse native forests for mono cropped pine trees, and clearing for farming practices like dairy grazing and maze crops to feed said animal agriculture. We can drop eco friendly possum rat and stote bait like 1080 but it’s not really the most effective in terms of what life remains, it could be the reason why life that is just holding on can tip over the edge and die. The only thing I personally can think of is if we humans get out there and clean it up, effective and efficient possum trapping and hunting. It’s a lot of mahi though.

    • @stephenking4170
      @stephenking4170 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You are right about historical destruction. However, the biggest destroyer of the forests that remain and are legally protected under DOC, is pests like deer, possums, goats, wallabies and stoats, rats. Our forests are being hollowed out and becoming empty supermarkets as deer and possums wreck the canopy, stop regeneration and systematically remove the most nutrient rich species in the forest. We need to strengthen DOC and make it ore accountable to provide a safer future for our forests and provide public confidence that DOC is able to deliver regular protection work on time. We need a major change.

    You are doing a good job and getting nowhere as you are ignoring who actually owns land. All your outrage means nothing when you address the wrong people, or the right people wrongly.
    While I understand your frustration perfectly, it could be considerably less if you made allies of local Iwi.

    • @stephenking4170
      @stephenking4170 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      We are NOT ignoring who owns the land. Take a look at the maps. Waipoua Forest is owned by the crown and managed by the Department of Conservation for the benefit of the people of New Zealand. Some parts of Waipoua are owned by the local iwi, Te Roroa and other parts are privately owned by conservation Trusts, but 90% of the forest is public land for which the Conservation Department is totally responsible. Our Department of Conservation is the front door for the people of NZ to take their concerns over the management of our national heritage on Conservation land.

    • @GeoffReidNZ
      @GeoffReidNZ  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      When it comes to forest health... are the public not free to communicate publicly or to our department/the minister as Te Roroa management are?
      Much of Waipoua is in co-management.. my aim is to hold DOC accountable. 11 overdue possum control!
      Nothing can cover up the failure to protect the forest over the last decade. The state of the trees speak for themselves. The Regional manager needs to get over her embarrassment and realise that the forest does not exist just to prop up her job. Her job exists as a service to the forest and after years of inaction, it's time to deliver.
      I have allies in Te Roroa who are equally concerned for the forest, thank you for your recommendation. I offered advocacy material to Te Roroa 'management' long before going public with the state of the forest. I was given the cold shoulder. Always willing to work together and the door is still open... if the cause is for a positive outcome for the forest of course.
      Current thumb twiddling isn't helping the state of the forest. We need urgent action now.
