I have loved this band for years. I found them through Death Note, and was immediately a fan. IMO, everything from Rokkinpo Goroshi onwards is amazingly creative, original, and heavy. At least enough to keep me, a lifelong metalhead, interested. If insane genre-bending is your vibe, no one is better.

Dir En Grey needs to be talked about. Soshaku is freaking incredible. Yousei Teikoku is my favorite band, they’ve created some of the most ethereal songs I’ve ever listened to, Gekkakyousou and Torikago. Not to mention their masterpieces like 天鵞絨パピリオ and Astral Dogma. Denkare is also incredible being Yousei Teikoku’s sister band. My favorite songs from them are probably E.E.L.S. and The Woman.

I only know a few of their songs, and while I like all those I've heard, Yoshu Fukushu is, imo, an absolute underrated masterpiece. It captures everything about teenage angst and the experience of going through puberty and school and never quite being able to leave those experiences behind so perfectly. The best songs are those where the music tells the same story when you remove the lyrics, and they nailed it for Yoshu Fukushu.

It's great to see you shining more light on Japanese music, Joey! There's SO many awesome Japanese bands and artists our there that I feel don't get the attention they deserve outside of Japan/ East Asia. I was one of the MANY people that discovered Maximum The Hormone through Death Note. While I've never gotten hugely into them, songs like Yoshu Fukushu and the title track of Bu-Ikikaesu are such JAMS! Other bands that I think would be interesting to see videos like this on are WagakkiBand, One OK Rock and Babymetal.

Great video, Joey! I love Maximum the Hormone and all their insane energy. 'Bu-ikikaesu' would be my pick for #1 since that was the album that got me into the band. As far as other band spotlights go, have you heard of 'Youkai Heavy Metal Band', Onmyouza? They've been around since the end of the 90s and their sound evolved from classic metal like Iron Maiden or Judas Priest to a more sort of symphonic/powerish metal in their more recent albums. All of their songs are full of references to Japanese lore or mythology and are really interesting to dissect. I think they started to get some mainstream attention when their song, 'Kouga Ninpouchou' was used for the anime Basilisk. My favorite album is 'Kishi Bojin' which is an entire concept album based around the Buddhist goddess Hariti.

I remember hearing this band on a channel IMF many years ago. They played metal from different bands across the world and it helped solidify my childhood as a metalhead.

Saw them live in London last summer. Probably the craziest gig I've ever been to - if you get the chance don't miss them live!

MTH were meant to come to Australia in 2010 but had to pull out for some reason. I've been waiting to see them since and finally have tickets to see them in Tokyo in 2 weeks 🤟

Phenomenal video, one of my favorite band, i'm glad you put them in because this is one band that should be much more well known in the world, and as for suggestions you should listen or just give it a try to Wagakki band and WANIMA.

I'm actually trying to listen to them more, so I appreciate the list! Definitely gonna check out Rokkinpo Goroshi then! And I would like to hear your opinion on Ziyoou Vachi (女王蜂)! They're my absolute favorite band and their style had varied a lot through the years, I'm sure you'll have some opinions about them (specially in their early era, when they self-described as a "fashion-punk" band!)

This is actually my favorite band, if anyone else cares they actually uploaded Buiikikaesu, Korekara no Menkata Cottelee no Hanashi wo Shiyou, Kusoban, Yoshu Fukushu, Mimikajiru Shinnuchi and Rokkinpo Goroshi to TH-cam very recently. Although oddly Maximum the Hormone isn't on Spotify in Japan (probably to push CD sales?), it's on Apple Music. Finding their original music movies that aren't react videos is practically impossible though.
My fav is buiikikaesu by miles (bikini sports ponchin is my fav) but I tend to cycle through their albums/singles a lot.
