It has deeper meanings, it's not just an action movie about shooting bad guys. It's the story of how he recovers his humanity and identity.
I find the empty house scene as brutal as the execution scene. It's so sad, and the actor somehow played it so perfectly that you know how the character is feeling without him saying a word, just with motions. Most of his face is covered but it's like we can see expressions, we can tell he's becoming more and more enraged when he figures out who he was and that he lost his family.
There are more details like the voice, at first he sounds robotic, but by the end of the movie he sounds human again.
The movie has funny parts too, so it has action, drama, comedy, and it shows a deteriorated society and how corrupt companies do things and care only about profit. I think it's a great movie and holds up perfectly. It never gets boring, I've watched it hundreds of times and I still find it amazing. It has a good hero, great villains, good music, good performances of the actors, good special effects (except for the long arms hahaha, that's the only flaw I can think of), I think this movie has it all.

Yeah it was so fun to watch! Ofc it has themes and a good story behind it, I think it just doesn’t have a lot of subtext, it makes it pretty clear to the audience what the story is, what the characters are going through and the consequences of corporate greed and corruption etc. really liked it though, I’ve heard the new one isn’t as good but it focuses a lot more on the themes?

No this actually IS the kind of a movie with a deeper meaning. This is satire at its best ,and Verhoeven was able to predict some of the most absurdly corrupt aspects of current American society. Watch it again through that lens and you'll see that it's more than just a simple linear story. There are layers to this one. You'll find this same satirical intelligence in his later sci-fi offerings, "Total Recall" and "Starship Troopers". The closest we've come to this brand of sci-fi is the television show, "The Boys".

Great reaction to the movie! Robocop 1987 is one of my favorite movies. The only thing, in my opinion, is that it is better to show some moments in the film, key or interesting scenes in their entirety, continuously along with your reaction to what is happening. @@thecocoacouch Starship Troopers is a satire of Fascism and propaganda movies from the same writing duo that did Robocop, with a similar style, loosely based on Robert A. Heinlein's book of the same name, but subverting its apparent message. On the surface, it's a dumb war movie about infantry fighting giant bugs in space, but look a little closer, it's actually a condemnation of the Military Industrial Complex with dark humor.
While you're at it, check out the movie Dredd, starring Karl Urban, then Judge Dredd, starring Sylvester Stallone. The movies are a little different in style, Dredd being more like a gritty Action movie with gruesome violence, while Stallone's movie is closer to a Sci-Fi Adventure movie, but they are both based on a long running comic book that also was a major influence for the writers of Robocop and to Verhoeven, but only after he had accepted to take the job of directing the movie.
Also, check out Verhoeven's original version of Total Recall, starring Arnie, as it is inspired by a Philip K. Dick story. Dick also wrote the novel that became the basis for Alien director Ridley Scott's Blade Runner. Total Recal was written by Dan O'Bannon and Ronald Shussett, who had also collaborated writing Ridley Scott's Alien! Like Robocop, Total Recall was also recently remade, or re-imagined, as a more child-friendly, PG-13 movie, discarding the over-the-top violence of Paul Verhoeven movies.
And if that wasn't enough connections, James Cameron (writer/director of Terminator 1&2, Abyss, Titanic, Avatar, True Lies) has said he was inspired by the book Starship Troopers, when writing a sequel to Ridley Scott's Alien.
Also, comic book writers John Wagner and Alan Grant, who have been frequent collaborators on Judge Dredd, have also written titles like Batman, Lobo for DC and even a Punisher story for Marvel, have done several crossovers, where Judge Dredd has met Alien, Predator, Lobo and Batman. Batman / Judge Dredd: Judgement on Gotham is the best of the bunch IMHO. In it, Dredd comics arch villain Judge Death, a ghostly, skeleton-like, supernatural massmurderering, dark caricature of a Judge from parallel dimension and Mean Machine Angel (a hilariously dumb psychopath with cybernetic parts and a dial on his head, who also made an appearance in the Stallone movie) end up in Gotham, while their dimension belt moves Batman to Megacity, where he meets the much kinder and more reasonable Psy-Division Judge, Cassandra Anderson (a psychic who made an appearance in the Urban movie) and Judge Dredd. Despite their obvious differences, after butting heads, Dredd and Batman join forces, together with Anderson, to take down Scarecrow, Death and Mean Machine.

It's OK to find some deeper meaning from this. Issues of humanity, identity, consumerism, privatisation of services and the problems it creates, satire of corporate greed and the military industrial complex.
The writers, Michael Miner and Edward Neumeier were both fans of the satirical British comic book antihero Judge Dredd, first published in magazine format Sci-Fi comic book 2000 AD in 2077. They would have liked to make a Dredd movie, but could not get the rights. Instead, they pooled together some other ideas they had, also taking inspiration from Judge Dredd comics. Dredd is a Lawman in post-apocalyptic America, in Megacity 2, a huge, overcrowded city with great skycrapers and rampant crime, whereJudges, helmeted motorcycle cops with the power to deal sentences on city. Dredd is basically an antihero, constantly grumpy, never takes his helmet off and the Judges are, essentially, Fascists. The comics have ultra violence, satire, parodies of commercials and even a few lines in Robocop's dialogue was taken straight from these comics, like the running gag, where Dredd is facing a huge crowd of enemies, totally outnumbered, but tells the "perps" to surrender, or there will be trouble. In the factory raid scene in Robocop, this was repeated, even if the jokey nature of it was understated. The comic book has inspired not only bands like Cure or Anthrax, who have a song named after Dredd's catchphrase "I am the Law", but also two movies, the more Sci-Fi action adventure style Judge Dredd starring Sylvester Stallone (softened for a younger audience and Dredd even removes his helmet!) and the gritty, more realistic and extremely violent reboot Dredd, starring Karl Urban. Stallone movie is closer to Demolition Man while Urban's version has more similarities with Robocop.
The writing duo also collaborated with Verhoeven on Starship Troopers, loosely based on Heinlein's book, which they all considered a glorification of military power. They took a different stance, making the movie styled somewhat like a propaganda war adventure movie, but at the same time, a deconstruction of the book, a backhanded attack at the military industrial complex and fascism , laced with dark humor and ultra violence. News clips and hilariously tasteless propaganda ads are used as world building, very much like they did with Robocop.

Robo's face is, according to the FX team... a death mask... a rubber copy of Murphy's face made from a mould after his death. As a kid I watched every RoboCop movie, even the TV series that wasn’t very good but I still liked it.
RoboCop 2 has one of my childhood crushes he was a few years older than me, if you see the movie and you see that smile you will know exactly who I’m talking about.😂
Just think this film was made in the 80s America has way more guns now and it’s way easier for any idiot to get them, we had an idiot with an AR 15 strapped to his back and a revolver on his hip standing in line to order food. I know what you’re thinking “call the police”, you can’t call the police until they point it at someone or start shooting because it’s an open carry state.
It happens so much, you can find videos of stuff like that all across the US.

Yeah I don’t know how I feel about all that hey. On one hand, it seems crazy to me everyone can just carry guns, but on another hand, potentially people who could endanger yourself and your family carry guns so you need something to defend yourself. A bit of a already opened Pandora’s box kinda a deal.

The actual Mayor of Detroit was present for the filming of the gas station scene. He was thrilled that there was a major movie filming in Detroit. Until the blew up the gas station, and he was like "What are you doing to my city?!?!" Supposedly Paul McCrane's melting man performance came directly out of him seeing himself in the makeup. He took great delight in terrorizing the cast and crew; staggering up to them and hanging on them, gasping and wailing. The director's cut today is the original "kiss of death" rated X (for violence) cut of 1987. The some of the more graphic scenes were trimmed to make it an R release.

5:59 - Up till now, I am baffled as to why Dick Jones had his creation leaded with LIVE rounds for a demo. That thing would have potentially killed other board members under different circumstances. It also shows that Dick didn't do a test run on the thing before he presented it. At least his boss the Old Man despite being a corrupt CEO know the robot was a failure and they can't advertise the thing as it is.
11:10 - Have you never wondered how quick they were obtaining a fresh specimen so quickly? Its as if they were expecting a high possibility that a cop will end up dead or something... deliberately.
21:41 - It bears pointing out that Dick's boss the Old Man doesn't about him running criminals on his own. The Old Man for all his faults wants to do things legal and being associated with criminal activities is bad PR.
24:54 - Now this is why public services like law enforcement should never, ever be privatized by private citizens or corporations. They can pull a "rules for thee, but not me" card every time they are on the law's crosshair. Its a good thing that Murphy's original personality resurfaced in a timely manner otherwise Directive 4 would have completely shut him down.
32:28 - I think Murphy was faking his scream and making a big show of being in great pain. He stopped doing those too quickly and acted relatively normal afterwards. He likely was baiting Clarence to move in his reach.
33:13 - A bit of brilliance on Murphy's part here. First he was reassuring the board members that he can't do anything against them which prevented them at panicking long enough to present his evidence against Dick. Then he gave a big hint that revoking Dick's status ie firing him on the spot will not cause Directive 4 to activate. The Old Man got the hint and did just that.
Do part two next for more action and carnage!

They use or used to use a substance termed Sugar Glass for breaking/smashing window effects in Hollywood. As the name suggest one of its ingredients was actually sugar or some form sucrose. It's safer to use than breaking real glass. If you re-watch each breaking glass scene you'll notice how the sugar glass breaks into small pieces as opposed to larger shaper dangerous shards that possibly injure the actor or stuntmen. Nowadays I think they use some sort of resin that behaves the same way as the sugar glass when broken but still safer to use than real glass.
Good catch on the final scene as Dick Jones falls to his death with elongated arms. Uncertain if the VFX team at the time didn't have the skill set to properly do the effect or didn't have the time before the movie's release date. Finally, the character of Bob Morton ( portrayed by the late Miguel Ferrer) is/was the real-life cousin of George Clooney.

The space stations and such were reflecting concerns of the day. The real concerns were things like spy satellites and space based nuclear weapons which could strike with almost no warning or conduct EMP attacks with none. The lasers were more fanciful.
Those were probably a reference to Reagan's anti ballistic missiles systems, or I should say proposed systems. These were maligned as being a "Star Wars" program. These programs were proposals for space based lasers to shoot down ICBMs when they were in flight or kinect kill machines (brilliant pebbles was one name) to do the same. However, they did not exist beyond a few well staged clips of "test" footage. Nor would any of them have had much effect on ground targets.
What they did do was shock the Soviets, and much of Western media and Hollywood, who thought it was real, or at least could be. It is thought that the Soviets spent a lot of money to counter these non-existent devices and was an additional factor pushing them over the edge to collapse.
That said, some in the West were very concerned that the Soviets had space based weapons, which were illegal under several treaties. Several movies made reference to such things including "2010" and "Maximum Overdrive".

@@thecocoacouch Automatic weapons, while technically legal, require a great deal of paperwork, background checks, storage requirements, and allowing the ATF to do random checks any time they desire. The whole thing is so burdensome and expensive that, practically speaking, few civilians own actual automatic weapons.
The restrictions owning a gun and when, where, and how it can be carried vary from state to state, and sometimes even city. Chicago or DC make it extremely difficult to own a gun, and practically impossible to carry it outside the house unless you are transporting to a shooting range. On the other end of things, the state where I live now (Arkansas) is an open carry state. I've gone into a grocery store and seen a guy with a pistol in a holster, plain and day, and no one batted an eye. If had done that in California, there would have been multiple nervous breakdowns, the police would have been called, and it would have been on the evening news.
Strangely, the places with the most restrictive gun laws are often those with the highest level of violent crime, and those committing violent crimes usually are already barred from legally owning a gun, and obtain their weapons on the black market. The rate of violent crime on the part of otherwise law abiding, legal gun owners is fairly comparable with France or Hungry.
