50 bucks for a 1080 Ti is an outstanding deal! I can't believe how old these Pascal cards already are, almost 6 years. And still performing excellent. I'm having an eye on the 1080 Ti's datacenter cousin, the Tesla P40 24GB; they go for super cheap on ebay right now.
Mica here - I was absolutely floored when I saw that 1080 Ti. It was supposed to come without the shroud and fans, and the owner said that he's selling it because its mining performance recently tanked, but that it did still work. Obviously I had to take the gamble with this one. Later, the seller even messaged me that he found the shroud and fans for it. In the end, I couldn't notice anything wrong with the GPU. It performed as well as expected and was fully stable. And it had come up right when I was about to resort to my backup GPU (a GTX 960) I saw so many people show interest in this challenge that I still did not feel safe, especially because I realized that my CPU score wasn't going to be what I had hoped. I was running out of time though and ended up finishing my build 2 days before the end of the year, and (badly) filming and putting together the video on the very same day. It all got a bit hectic, but it was super fun. Can't wait to join this year's challenge if there's more time for it!
Congrats on 1K subscribers! This was a really cool challenge and it was really great to see the wide range of contenders. Really sorry that I didn't make the deadline this time around. My build attempt was plagued with defective parts and by the time I got all the replacement gear sorted it was way too late. I'm hoping I'll be able to participate next year. Looking forward to it! 🙂👍
I really admire what you've done here, Amber. You really put yourself out there and took some risks so I'm super glad it turned out the way it did. Looking forward to seeing the next one unfold.
Got a chuckle out of me mentioning the heatsink saga 😁. It was great fun to enter thank you for hosting it Amber. The reason that 7850 performed so well was because it was a MONSTER overclocker, almost maxed both sliders! I also sold it before christmas for more than double the build cost(I doubled the RAM and added an i5). Made someone very happy to have a little esports machine for the holidays for not a lot of money!
Great variety of different systems were presented. Congrats to the award-winners! I'm looking forward for the next challenge, was much fun searching parts and build it:-)
Thanks for the award 😁 Will definitely join in for 2023 - charity shops might have some stock now, and I'll probably be able to avoid burning a lot of my budget on new parts.
I'm glade you had fun with this. sorry I wasn't able to get mine done in time. I have Plans for the next one😜 HUGE shout out to everyone that joined you.
Hi, if the OG challenge didn't include heatsinks I would've used my spare H100i cooler :) Anyway, its nice I landed in the top 10 for this challenge :) Keep on keeping on :)
I missed the challenge due to a late delivery of a gpu, i'll be there next time, i guess my build would have been up there, This channel needs to go beyond 1k!
I'd suggest for the challenge that the case & powersupply is also excluded from the budget besides cooling for cpu or gpu if needed. Like they get a used gtx 970 with a broken or dead fan, they get too buy like a pair of 1200 rpm 120mm fans & strap onto the card with zip ties without it eating into the budget kind of stuff. That would open up a bit lower bar of entry for the challenge I'd imagine without as much trust in getting lucky with the local market getting hold of some ridiculous combo of parts. Ofc thermalpaste isn't a part of the budget either right ? Might try too hop in on this as i do have a pretty complete testrig atm besides storage & case, might get a bit faster gpu for the challenge though if i put money aside for it over the year. Wouldn't be that bad of an entry considering most of it has been free, ram, gpu & motherboard is 100% free here on my end. CPU got the I5 2500k just shy of 1 year ago for 149 sek or about 14 usd too help power my gtx 1660 super some more. Which I'm still using with my 5600 now, though didn't help as much as i had hoped in GTA Online & Borderlands 3 even at 4.4 ghz vs 3.9 ghz on the I5 2500 non k cpu vs the 2500k. Got the motherboard an Asus Z77-V LX with dead onboard sound, a locked I5 2500 non k, 2x4 gb 1600 mhz ram sticks free with a Noctua NH-U12P SE2 cpu cooler. Came from a relative that upgraded & built a smaller mini itx pc around Christmas 2017. (Bought an AM4 mount for this cooler around the summer of 2022 when i started too piece together a platform upgrade & using it with my Ryzen 5600 atm since December 1st, works great.) And i already had 2x4 gb sticks with my previous AMD phenom II x6 1090t cpu which i kept for a total of 16 gb back in 2017 (paired with a r9 280 i bought early January 2015 until summer of 2020 when it died.) That phenom II x6 cpu, motherboard, cpu cooler later became the base for my dads desktop pc. Audio was killed due too a mistake i did. (Was testing speakers that had been sitting in storage around the middle of the summer in 2020 & amp in one pair blew that out when i turned them on before plugging them in. Just a mild high pitched hum like i gave it tinnitus now.) Can use my wireless headset for sound that I'm wearing atm though if needed. (Corsair void wireless rgb, got it free from a friend that got tired of the crappy battery life after 4 years of daily use, but bought a new battery for it for like 7$. & usb port is going a bit bad on it from simple wear & tear, i can still charge it if left laying down though over a few hours. Or get the Asus Xonar dg soundcard plugged into the pci slot for a bit & use the wired headset or a pair of speakers for sound, or might buy a cheap usb soundcard, just needs too work after all. GPU's atm best one is my Lil brothers old GTX 460 a MSI Cyclone model, or a HD 5770 a Sapphire lite 1 gb (Originally bought new in 2010.) Gigabyte batmobile cooler 5770 (free from cousin, dead fan controller & one dvi port is partially dead if not entirely dead cant recall.) Or a xfx dual dissipation HD 6870 with a xigmatek battleaxe gpu cooler from my dads desktop pc. Bought new around 2012 as an upgrade from the hd 5770 (yeah it wasnt much of an upgrade lol.) Later traded for motherboard which i sold for 50$ in 2016 i think maybe 2017. (Can look up used prices for a HD 6870 online & just figure out the average between like 3 sold cards.) PSU a 35$ 600w powersupply from kolink (Kolink core 600w) I bought it too have a spare around for my pc in a pinch or my Lil brothers pc. Which I've used a bunch for the testrig & for some overclocking on an old am2+ motherboard, was a contest i joined in on last year around 7 months ago. Was " Tech Tested's athlon dualcore overclocking contest ". Am2+,AM2,939 & 940 was allowed only. Used a Brisbane Athlon x64 x2 5200+ which i picked on a whim that was laying around, which happened too be the most stable & fastest cpu out of the two i tried 3.328 ghz from stock at 2.7 ghz. Second one being a Athlon x64 x2 6000+ also the gimped brisbane core, also reached 3.3 ghz but wasnt stable with the same ht link speed & northbridge speed so it benchmarked slower as well. Got 4th in the world out of 6 submissions on hwbot with the 5200+ & 10th overall in the contest which isn't that bad being first time joining a contest without much prep work other then powersupply & borrowing cpu cooler from my dads pc on a whim, my old arctic cooling freezer 13 pro.
I’m looking forward to the 2023 challenge. I had a system I was going to submit for 2022, but life just got in the way and it ended up getting put on the back burner.
Gah i should have just submitted that computer i got. I picked up a ASRock Z97E-ITX/ac board with a i7 4790S and 8GB of ram for $114. With a free GTX 1070 and a power supply i literally found in a trash can i think i could have competed even with the penalty for being over. But i felt like i shouldn't since it was slightly over. Oh well the i7 4790K and GTX 780 Ti are in the mail this Windows XP monster will still rise in time for 10 years of XP being out of support next year. I wish it were easier to search for Kepler Titans on ebay. Seems like a 50/50 chance you get a Maxwell Titan X or a Pascal Titan Xp.
@@TechAmbr They didn't even name them all within a generation the same. The original Kepler Titans include the Titan, Titan Z and Titan Black. Ofc if you try and buy a Titan Black everyone is like "well it has two words in its name so it's a rare limited edition so its $1000."
Bless you, Mixologist Technology Lady™!
Comment of the day 😄

Thanks! I can't wait to see what you make this year, I think it'll be epic in that special "vswitchzero" kinda way.
I really admire what you've done here, Amber. You really put yourself out there and took some risks so I'm super glad it turned out the way it did. Looking forward to seeing the next one unfold.
Yeah, it looked a little rocky for a while there, but I'm back and better than ever. Hope to see you around for the next one, it'd be fun!

That's fantastic! Good news all around!
My excessively upgraded Optiplex 745 would have been fighting for last place... less CPU but more graphics
Great variety of different systems were presented. Congrats to the award-winners! I'm looking forward for the next challenge, was much fun searching parts and build it:-)
Yeah! It's a fun itch to scratch, isn't it?
Thanks for the award 😁

Woot! Awesome to see all these creative systems!

I can't wait to see what you make. And don't worry; plenty of lead time on this next one 😂
Awesome alliteration allocation! Thank you for laying out the challenge! So many fun builds. Looking forward to this year’s competition!
Positively prolific prose! Thank you! I can't wait to see what you put together for it.

Grats to a thousand subs! What a cool challenge and some pretty sweet builds. I wasn't able to join this one but maybe I can for the next one!
Thanks, Rik! I hope so, I can't wait to see what you make!

fun times! takes me back in time lol
Can I enter the next contest, I love building the best cheap pc I can?
Of course! Stay tuned for the announcement video where I'll announce rules and challenges for the 2023 edition!
