  • Jose Cuervo Especial is garbage in my opinion, and we're going to explain why. In a nutshell, 51% of anything is only half what is advertised. But, you get what you pay for and it is no different with Jose Cuervo Especial.

    You like headaches and awful tasting fake tequila? Perhaps this is the product for you! But, this is just my opinion, you can choose for yourself.

    Couldn't agree more! The Tequila culture in Australia is shocking. 99% of tequila drinkers are 15-20 year old girls who think drinking tequila involves shot glasses, lime, salt and a bottle with a red plastic sombrero on the lid.

    When I was in college, Jose Cuervo was the only tequila you found, anywhere. Patron set me straight. I tasted a true tequila and I would never consider buying Jose Cuervo Especial again. Not saying Patron is my favorite tequila brand, though I think it is great, it just set me on the right path.

      That's the part that befuddles me. Where I'm from people know so little about tequila that especial is hardly even discounted compared to a bog standard but honest tequila like Camarena or el Jimador. Hell, recently I bought a handle of El Jimador repo for $6 more than I would have paid for 750 ml of especial. Again, nobody really raves about drinking Jimador neat but Especial is like a bottle of liquid pain by comparison, so I'll take that deal every time.

    • @cmcocktails

      Nobody raves because ignorance is silence. I am just leaving cancun now and I am certain almost every tourist drinking free margaritas on the beach of their all inclusive resorts just think they taste better in mexico. Oblivious to the fact that they are using real tequilas and not mixtos.

    villipend you need to turn on the ability for people to reply to your comments with G+ :(
    Jose Cuervo gold isn't a "blend" in the traditional sense. It uses "filler" to make up the rest, that "filler" can be sugar, caramel color, grain alcohol, whatever they want, as long as 51% is tequila.
    Scotch is usually blended with other ages and such to make a consistent product and has a few more rules to what can be part of it. Jose Cuervo Gold is just a way to stretch a lot of product a longer way by filling it with additional "stuff" to make it all fit in the bottle :)

    I'm impressed. I really enjoyed the informative video you posted. You made some excellent points. Personally I have never regarded tequila high in my collection of alcohols. One being the reason(s) you mentioned. Even from airports I _never_ get a bottle of tequila because I don't regard it as a versatile alcohol in cocktails.
    I looked at the bottle I have now, it's Sauza...not 100% agave. Should I ever get another bottle, I have to make an investment, probably worth the trouble, right?

    Hey Derrick, love your videos! Recently picked up a Jose Cuervo Silver bottle, it was supposed to be the Rolling Stones tour pick. It did say made with blue agave but nothing about percentage, what are your thoughts about this bottle?

    • @cmcocktails
      @cmcocktails  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      it's just as poor as Cuervo Especial / Gold, it's not 100% de agave. They just write "made with Blue weber" because all tequila has to be made with that species of agave. It also makes it 'sound' like it's 100% because they bother to give you information that adds no value (it's like saying "humans, now made with skin!")
      It's junk. Get Tradicional (repo or blanco)

    Greetings I'm from México (sorry if I don't have a good write, I just have 1 month studing english) I'm agree with you the jose cuervo especial in others countries is terrible I think that the problem is that they only sells the product to sell and they don't give the original quality, here in México bottle leaves you about 20 dolars and not in 7 dolars but the curious fact is that the best tequila in the world is the jose cuervo 250 años (very, very expensive $2000 dolars one bottle), If you want to drink a good tequila I recommend 2 bottles... the first is tequila jimador is very strong and has a good smell very appropriate to stay drunk in minutes.... the second is tequila gran patrón this one is expensive ($2000 pesos mexicanos, 150 dolars more less) the flavor has a special touch like a angelic singing came down from heaven.

    I was always wonder why is the gap between prices of various brands of tequila, now I know, is the Agave, that's ok, now, I have a comment about the BMW, why your said that 50% made in Germany and 50% made in Mexico, why Mexico? you sound like a racist stating by name the country, in my opinion you should say " other country" and , well, I have a Fender Stratocaster guitar that is made in Mexico and is as good as any made in the USA, but that's not the point, but as I said, why name Mexico? make me think that anything made in Mexico is cheap...

    • @cmcocktails
      @cmcocktails  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I say it's made in Mexico because...well, quite honestly, it is. I see absolutely no racist (Mexico isn't a race) remark by telling someone where something is from.
      Imagine you go to the store and ask where a product was made in they look at you strange and say "it's a secret...it's just made." I'd put the product down and walk away.
      If the "made in Mexico" stickers on items makes you think it's cheap that's not my problem, that's yours :) Just because something is made in Mexico doesn't mean it's cheap quality, we have tiki glasses we sell in the store made in Mexico and they're exactly the same design and quality as something made here. The difference is, because of wages, rules, etc. they can make them there for less money so I can sell the tiki mugs for $12 a piece instead of $20. Is it "cheap"? Yeah, it's "cheaper" than making it here, but it's still the same product quality in terms of materials (it's all about how much those materials cost).
      If products are considered "cheaply made" because they're made in a specific country than a) that's extremely valuable information as a buyer b) valuable information for a vender and c) a problem with products made in the country labeled. If they're being told it's cheap than the problem is they're being told to create cheap product.
      I have also seen products made in Mexico and made in Germany (or made in the US) that are inferior products from Mexico compared to the other country yet they're the same product. This also occurs with mainland china as well because companies like Wal-Mart force their companies to produce from the cheapest bidder and, products that were once good are forced to be made cheaper in order to distribute at Wal-Mart because Wal-Mart expects specific levels of margin.
      Many of these "cheap" products are made cheap because they're using more caustic materials or things that damage the environment. At AwesomeDrinks I've had many customers call to ask where specific products are made. They want them made in the US because they know our regulations are high enough to require products to be made safer than those in China (or probably Mexico). So, they _have a right_ to know how the materials are handled in the product they are purchasing, especially plastic parts that infants will use as toys.
      It's not a problem with labeling something China, Mexico, etc. It's a problem with big box stores. Perhaps we should fix the real problem and not worry about how things are labeled. So, if you ever walk into a Wal-Mart or similar store remember what you said about "made in Mexico" because you're making the problem worse by supporting them. ;-)

    • @fjohnson747
      @fjohnson747 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Correctly specifying the country of origin is stating a fact. It's not racism except in the minds of the professionally offended.
      As for your Mexican Strat, and assuming it's stock: what may be factually correct would be to say, your particular MIM (Made in Mexico) Strat sounds as good as *some* MIA (Made in US) Strats. I'm quite sure it is not as good as *any* MIA Strat because there are tangible material differences (lower-quality pots, tuners, pickups, bridge block) in the components used in Mexicans which are simply lower-quality vs. their MIA counterparts. Fact. It's more than just a matter of in which country the guitar was built.

    • @NikkkitoNippongo
      @NikkkitoNippongo 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're wrong: Fender Guitars, just like other many products of mexican origin, are not lower-quality, they are made with parts made in the USA, but assembled in MX, in this case the pick-ups, keys, pots and other components, Fact. And the way my guitar is played, makes no difference if is MIM or MIA, the Made in the USA thing is over, even what you're wearing right now has been made outside the US, we're now in a deep globalization, wether you like it or not.

    • @fjohnson747
      @fjohnson747 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you really believe all the same components are used in both the MIA & MIM Fender models, I'm not going to waste further time arguing with you. You're wrong. Go try selling that BS to the folks on fenderforum.com or tdpri.com & post the link to any threads you start. It should be quite amusing.

    • @cmcocktails
      @cmcocktails  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      NikkkitoNippongo Just a head's up, we've been outsourcing across the world for over 20 years, this is nothing new. If somehow you're on a kick thinking "making things outside the US is new", then I just wanted to open up your eyes and let you know, it's not new at all.
      The "Made in the USA" thing was over in 79, get with the times :) There are plenty of people that still buy US-only products (or at least think they do or try hard to do it), and they have to work hard to do it.
      As a guy that runs an online cocktail accessory and glassware store, I believe I'm quite capable and more knowledgeable on this concept than most people. If it's made with silicone, it's probably not made in the USA, if it's mass produced it's almost definitely not made in the USA. If it's cheap to buy, it's probably not made in the USA.
      I can contract out a company in the US to build me a shaker tin and it will probably cost me $4-$8 a tin. I can contract that same thing out to India and pay $3.80 a tin with logo and custom paint work and pay the shipping to bring it over here. Fact is, there are places you can make things cheaper because they have different laws, different economies or simply will do the work for less. The US has to pay higher healthcare wages, higher rent for buildings, more money for electricity, general higher wages and comply with more strict regulations which usually cost the companies more to handle (for certifications, inspections or additional work to be compliant). That, my friend, is a fact. And, those additional costs are factored into the products that are made here.
      Add to that the need to make them higher priced because volume is less. Why is volume less? Competition from other countries makes people flock to Wal-Mart to buy cheaper versions (yeah, cheaper in production quality too) because they can buy five for the price of one US version. So, you get 5x the longevity of a cheaper product because you just buy another five for the price of one US made version. People are fine with that apparently, so they lose the right to bitch.

    How do you feel about blended whiskys? I kinda feel the same way about them since a lot of the body of it is cheap grain alcohol, but at least they're upfront about it being a blend most of the time.

    • @cmcocktails
      @cmcocktails  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm find with blended whiskies, because they're 'blended' whiskies on the label and the master blender is _trying_ to get the flavor they got (for whatever reason that might be) so if their intention is to get that flavor, I'm fine with it. If they're tasting that way because it's just cheaper than doing it right...that's when I have a problem with it :)

    Well I have to admit I didn't know that much about tequila but always preferred the brown stuff. A friend of mine said to drink thr white kind because it has less impurities....less of a hangover. But I think you convinced mr to go with 100 percent agave. What brands are the best ?

    • @cmcocktails
      @cmcocktails  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you're just starting out and don't want to spend a bunch, try Hornito's Plata, Jose Cuervo Tradicional, Cazadores or kick it up to Cabo Wabo, or a bit higher to Siete Leguas.
      "Brown" tequila that's under $25 is going to no doubt be white tequila + caramel coloring to make it darker and aged looking. A reposado tequila (aged a few months) will have a darker tint to it, and anejo will be aged even more and may have that bourbon look to it.

    I was surprised as I bought Don Julio Anejo online in Europe from a Dutch store, it must've passed Germany because on the box it says "Mit Farbstoff" which means colouring. I wonder why, it's still quite pale and the bottle is darkened (like Islay scotches) and it tastes really good! I've only had Patron Silver before.

But for my 21st birthday (which was 12/10/2013) I bought the gallon of Jose which was cheaper :( worst decision ever. My question is what is your out look on 1800 tequila?

      @edgarruiz6595 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      tequila 1800 is a very good tequila but funny fact it is also made by jose cuervo.
      i would totally recomend you 1800 and tradicional, if you like drinking tequila by it self look for a reposado.

      Edgar Ruiz Proximo Spirits owns the 1800 brand and recently picked up the Jose Cuervo brand a few months ago. They also own Maestro Dobel, Three Olives Vodka, Kraken Rum and a bunch of other products.
      However, the NOM for Tradicional and 1800 come from the same place, yes.

    Hi I just had a quick question for you. I wanted to buy a tequila for my boyfriend as an anniversary gift. He has only drank Jose Cuervo Especial and I wanted to make him a TRUE 100% margarita to show him what he's been missing!! I just wanted your guidance and preference maybe a list of top 5 or 10 100% tequilas so I know more or less what I should get to wow and impress him. I would greatly appreciate it!! Thanks a ton in advance!!!

    • @cmcocktails
      @cmcocktails  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Okay so first, watch our tequila tasting finals: Blanco Tequila Tasting Results: Riazul, Cabo Wabo, Alma and Tres Generaciones
      That's a few to start with in your list. Second, you can always hit up our channel homepage and using the search option in the submenu (the one with the magnifying glass), search "tequila review"
      That will return a bunch of great suggested tequila's to try out as well. On top of that list, Herradura, Don Julio or Jose Cuervo Tradcional are some good ones if you can find them.
      If you can order online, checkout DrinkupNY.com as a source for some of the ones we bring up in our reviews. You won't find every tequila brand everywhere so searching or secondary options may be needed.
      Just avoid Jose Cuervo and Patron as neither are good indicators of a rich tequila heritage. While Patron Silver as it is 100% de Agave, it's lacking soul... it's like the vodka of tequila.
      To understand a bit more about some of the reasons they're called silver, reposado, anejo I have a breakdown on our website: bit.ly/1aTDm2v

    • @sarahjeffcoat7732
      @sarahjeffcoat7732 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      WOW I didn't expect you to get back to me so fast! That was a great help thank you so much!! Question again though...I thought the tequila was what gives the margarita its color? if I buy blanco/clear colored tequila wouldn't that effect the drink? or it doesn't matter??

    • @cmcocktails
      @cmcocktails  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sarah Jeffcoat margarita's are often light green due to either the sour mix or the lime juice that's added. Watch our Common Man Margarita: How To Make The Common Man Margarita
      The color of a margarita has no bearing on the tequila used (with exceptions I'm sure). Even a more oak aged anejo isn't going to impact much on the color.
      Some folks, my hardcore tequila buddies, just pour tequila in a glass with a wedge of lime squeezed in it and call it done. It is usually clear or light amber at that point.

    • @cmcocktails
      @cmcocktails  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Most triple sec brands are cheap, much like "schnapps" here in America they're typically grain alcohol with some flavor additives. Luxardo Triplum makes a real triple sec from three different styles of citrus fruit. Senior Curacao also makes a clear curacao orange liqueur (along with blue curacao liqueur) that are legit.
      I have not seen many bars using a higher end triple sec. What you can do is do what I often do and check to see if the orange liqueur is Cointreau or Grand Marnier or something of that ilk--that way you know you're getting a higher shelf brand and not just a schnapps-like sweetener they paid $9 for at the local store :)

    Hi Derrick. I've got a few favorite online liquor shops in Germany, I order my spirits from there, and looking at the selection, the closest thing to a real tequila was this: SIERRA ANTIGUO ANEJO
    An ultra premium tequila añejo matured for over two years in oak barrels. 100% blue agave. Deep golden tequila with a full bodied, warm and exceptionally delicate mellow flavour. Savour neat in a classic cognac glass.
    Have you tasted that one? Will it be much better than Sierra Tequila Silver?

This time i bought a 100% agave one, and it changed my view on tequila completely. Not only do I wake up without the massive headache, but the tastes can't be compared. I know this video is about a year and a half old but I've never seen Cuervo 51% for $7 or close to it. I live in New Jersey and the cheapest I've ever seen a 750 ml bottle, which seems to be what the guy in the video is holding, over the last 2 years is maybe $16.00. Nonetheless, I won't be buying Cuervo or Suaza Gold, which isn't much better ever again. I just checked a local store and a 200 ml Cuervo will cost $7. Any thoughts on Jose Cuervo Cinge ($18 for 750ml?
