Fun fact: Georgina Born, bassist/cellist of Henry Cow is related to country-pop singer Olivia Newton-John, cousin-wise - they both share the same grandfather Max Born.
Great band, great song, no doubt. It intrigues me why I like Dagmar Krause so much. I do try to understand where the beauty and power of her singing lie and cannot answer. She is just amazing, different, unique, be it with Henry Cow, Slapp Happy, Art Bears, Kevin Coyne. Love her.
Henry Cow at their rehearsed to death prime. Now I can detect the pop music and I like this band more than at anytime I can recall. Even so the pure improvisations were and are the meat of their extensive catalogue.
Phil Ochs' antiwar song "I Ain't Marching Anymore" is one of the most powerful songs ever written.. brings me to tears. I'm pleased to learn that Henry Cow covered one of his tunes. ♥
THIS is amazing...to actually see this band perform live....I have most of their recordings, live in the USA, so Ive never saw them peform. I love RIO, Zappa, the Italian prog band AREA
I was thinking "why, in a band full of stars, does the camera always focus on the bassist". Then I went to do some research on Georgina Born and found that now she is a professor at Cambridge! Henry Cow, what an odd and exquisite band
Yes. Thanks for posting this. Henry Cow were one of my favourite bands (saw them a few times) and Dagmar is absolutely peerless. Her 'Tank Battles' is worth a few hundred listens. As is anything by Art Bears.
The fact that this amazing video was made available after 33 years gives me some hope that some footage from Magma's 1973/74 concerts will be found .....
Far out. The Most Intimidating Vocalist In Art/Progressive Rock in all her glory. And at this time, from what I understand, she was not in the best of health. Which only makes this performance all the more remarkable.
funny to think if it wasnt for this then she'd just have been in some random comedy band, nothing against slapp happy ofcourse but henry cow really brought out the talent she had
@@growskull Krause also was pretty brilliant in an earlier band called I.D. Company. And seriously, she is a great singer. It took me a lot of time to get used to her unique voice.
@3243_ oh ive never heard of that before, listening rn its pretty cool, their voices are very different haha. yeah her voice is unique but once you get used to it its amazing
I've rolled in here on a gentle wave of early morning insomnia and it seems like a nice space to chill for a few minutes before being tugged back out into the digital ocean of night and it's restless tidal forces.
And D definitely want to point out that she is one heck of a singer, even if her voice takes a little getting used to (and some can never deal with Krause's singing).
Merci pour cette vidéo, enfin un live d'Henry Cow sur TH-cam ! J'imagine que c'est extrait du DVD 40th anniversary box ?? I'm going to buy it ! J'ai vu Henry Cow en concert en 1975, 76 et 77, ça reste des souvenirs énormes... Et les revoir à travers une vidéo c'est fantastique.
Yes it is. this video comes from the bonus DVD of the aniversary box. I choosed this song for copyright reasons. The concert DVD just worth the price of bying the entire box. BUY IT! If you are a true fan, you won't regret. (en français: c'est extrait du DVD bonus du coffret 40ème anniversaire. Pour des raison légales, je ne vais pas publier l'intégralité du concert, ACHETEZ LE, ça vaut le prix).
True. Art Bears was Krause, Cutler and Frith. Tim Hodgkinson and Lindsay Cooper didn't play with Art Bears, to the best of my knowledge, not live anyway. Georgina Born played bass on the first Art Bears album, but none of the rest of them.
Curiously, the art music direction Phil Ochs was heading with his last couple of albums isn't that far from this - certainly not as far as his older folk material. After listening to Pleasures of the Harbor, I could hear this same backing track with Phil singing.
@@lazaraza When you know music you can tell apart bad recordings from bad musicianship. This is obviously good music. Maybe the other guy just didn't like it anyway. It's rather languid. Reminds me of Van Der Graaf Generator.

don't think that was their intention. watch out for photos with Robert Wyatt on stage, 1975. have you seen my photos from Henry Cow, Lugano, September 1977? Very different 'normal 70's' dressing.

Not quite true - they always claimed that the name was just "in the air" and crying out to be used. They never said that they got it from Cowell. But they might have been being disingenuous.

its the talent & power of operatic singing but still with the personality of normal style

@AlexanderBabikovHimself lol, amd I still like Henry Cow! :)
why do I watch this every single week?
So beautiful, so powerful.
Oh my goddess, this is incredible. I've listened to both Ochs and Henry Cow for decades, and had no idea this recording existed. Thanks for posting.
Phil Ochs, you will always be my hero.
OK - Just the words "flower in a flame" are well worth the price of admission.
This is real music, awesome.

Was just here looking at Phil Ochs. Cool bad!
Amazing.. Great performance..
Браво !
I remember this one in concert back in 1976/77... one of the best live experiences in my life.
Henry Cow performed this piece when i saw them live at the Queens Hotel, Westcliff on Sea in 1977

Phil Ochs committed suicide just a few months prior to this concert. Chris Cutler had high praise for Phil Ochs in his R.I.O. notes
Didn't Tim and Lindsay play on the first AB CD "Hopes & Fears" ? And Georgina on the last HC CD "Western Culture" ?
On the more trivial side I noticed they all dressed in paramilitary gear.
Dagmar was a committed Mao-ist then and thus the jacket.

1976 -- that was the year Ochs committed suicide. Would this be a tribute?

It's on the live album Stockholm & Göteborg
