I’m not sure if it was ever made canon by Butch Hartman himself, but I was definitely leading with the fanfiction trope of ghost cores being the center of a ghost’s being, and the thing that keeps them in existence, and if they’re destroyed, the ghost will, essentially, be wiped form existence.
