- This livetalk has as speaker Helmut Wenzel, Managing Director of WENZEL Consulting Engineers GmbH, Vienna, Austria.
Helmut Wenzel has a PhD in Bridge Construction from the University of Life Sciences, Vienna, Austria.
Dr. Wenzel has been involved in bridge engineering construction and health monitoring since the beginning of his career. Major bridge projects required the development of extraordinary skills in design, construction technologies as well as construction and asset management for successfully completion. In this capacity Dr. Wenzel serves as technical advisor to many owners or operators of large infrastructure projects.
Dr. Wenzel is well known among Europe’s leading experts in the field of Ambient Vibration Monitoring. Since 1995 he has pushed the development of the Monitoring system BRIMOS to a level relevant for practical application.
He wrote 3 successful textbooks, key notes and numerous papers on innovation and research results which have been published in all the major engineering journals. Since 1992 he has taught at the University of Life Sciences in Vienna in the fields of risk-based project strategies, asset management, bridge design and construction technologies.
The Austrian State Prizes for Consulting 1990, 1999 and 2005 were awarded to Dr. Wenzel by the Ministry of Construction and Infrastructures in recognition of the success of the Olympic Grand Bridge in Seoul, Korea, the seismic and wind studies for the record breaking Second Freeway Project in Taiwan and the successful construction of the Kao Ping Hsi Bridge, another global record project.
The major results from recent research projects have found their place in the international standardisation. The developed mathematical formulation of ageing is included in the new EUROCODE on the Risk-based Inspection Framework (EN16991:2018) and the monitoring and assessment approach is documented in the VDI Guideline 4551 on Monitoring and Assessment of Offshore Wind Structures. He is currently engaged in ISO TC59 to issue the standard ISO21928 on sustainable civil engineering works.
