You can customize the parts on your character's vehicle to make them go faster, slower, or better adapt to the level. After every race you earn points and those points can be exchanged for mod pods (parts and paint for your car). The real bread and butter of the game is the co-op team races (hence the title of the game) It's hard to explain it all in a comment but there's stuff like passing items between your teammates, giving your teammate a boost whenever they get hit, or getting a "special team boost" that makes you invincible. Hmmm what else, oh every character has a type. There's a speed type, technique type, and a power type. A speed type is self explanatory, a technique type can drive on quicksand or water without losing any speed, and a power type can drive through most obstacles. BUT, if you want to play a faster game with arguably more variety, polish, and better stage design, try Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed (which got a next gen patch not too long ago for xbox series consoles). (also if you read all of this, stay blessed and have a great day)
I can vouch for all star racing transformed. Well worth it and you can always get the steam party pack n gift it to friends

You said the speed type is self explanatory but gave no explanation what that means, they get a mini shield when they use a boost item to defend themselves against items being shot at them

You have three levels of boost to charge while drifting or tricks in air. Also you can connect your drifts, and your mid air tricks into a drift when you land clean.
You can also flip to the side in case you're close to the edge

16:14 thats actually a good question, never tested that myself, but Speed type characters like Shadow, Blaze, Sonic, Amy etc have a passive where whenever you boost ( the item) you get like a little shield behind you that actually blocks items being shot at you, you have to time that bitch tho
Technique type characters like Tails (my main), Chao and Silver dont lose traction off-road
And power types can go thru obstacles just like in Sonic Riders

This game was actually pretty good when it came out, you can go fast, you just have to learn how to chain tricks with drifting.
I remember when my sisters and I played sonic and sega all star racing when one of us were losing we wouldn’t finish the last lap and when they did cutscenes after the race we’d hit them with rockets and bombs😂😂😂

Idk why they took a step backwards and only had strictly Sonic characters with generic sport cars instead of unique vehicles tied to them

Ngl, watching Le drive in this game is kinda painful, Leland keep drifting to gain the stronger boosts, think of it like Mario Kart my guy, and actually trick when you hit a jump, and if the jump is high enough, spam a triple trick (front or back flip) which are easy to pull off, you get that blue boost which makes you go way faster
