The talented folks at Moots make a beautiful handcrafted frame to be sure. I think if I find myself in the rarified air of shopping for a bespoke titanium bike I’m drawn towards Mosaic Cycles.
Love the look of the bike. Recently started trying off road stuff and did 5 day off road bike packing trip to scotland. Used GRX 46/30 up front and SRAM 11-36 rear cassette as saw it on a 3T gravel bike. Thought I’d never need that “bale out” gear. Hi Ollie, alex and/or manon! Cheers from the Philippines. Quick-ish question but a long back story, are all shimano crank spindle the same length? I have a custom Ave Maldea CX steel frame with 150r5800 crank and when I was going to change the bb my new mechanic noticed that the retention bolt was only like 3 threads in and he couldn't change the bb shell cause the road bb shell is too narrow for my Maldea CX bike, frame builder said that i could fit up to a 50c tire on the frame. I was thinking of using a mtb bb shell but then that wouldn't solve my spindle problem. Could I use a GRX crankset instead? or is there like a longer retention bolt. Thanks guys! #AskGCNTech
Been enjoying your channel for a while. I have a question for you re: pro issue bikes. Would it be common for pro team riders to receive bikes without serial numbers? I’m trying to pick up one claimed to be a pinarello issued to a team Wiggins rider. Hope you can throw some light on this … thanks
I’ve built a few pro bikes 2 from the cannondale drapac team and both had serial numbers. Slightly different from your standard serial numbers as they usually are the first models to roll out but they did have serial numbers.
#askgcntech is a ti frame ordered in China as good as a ti frame ordered in the western world? I am dreaming of a ti gravel bike but they are very expensive. On aliexpress you can get a frame for just 1000€. Now I heard that some manufacturers don't take a lot of care keeping the oxygen out while working on the frame. How serious is the problem?
Look up Serk A21. They are Aussies but producing in Beijing. I got one and so do a couple of friends and everyone is quite stoked about them. And my welds look nicer than the ones on Ollie’s bike 😛. They are more than 1.000 but worth it. Let me know if you want to know more.
Ever seen a Ti frame up close? I have - my bike is a Why Cycles - R+: and I can tell you they more than match Moots' build quality and spec of quality components at a much more reasonable price point.
The difference is the titanium quality. Moots uses aerospace grade titanium for their frames while other companies like Why Cycles and linsky use titanium with other filler. The titanium shavings from aerospace grade metal sheets gets mixed with other additives to bring a ti bike at a much more affordable price point. Nothing wrong with that but you are getting what you pay for :) No bike is better than a bike you enjoy riding
I'd like to see a Bob Ross painting of Where's Ollie. It would be a beautiful panorama of mountains and trees, maybe a stream, and if you look closely, you could find Ollie, sitting by himself in a meadow, contentedly admiring the welds on a Moots frame.
Moots do nice welds and that’s it. I still prefer Litespeed. Moots still only do round tubes, Litespeed are the Gods of titanium tube shaping. They have aero gravel bikes with bladed tubes. And the Litespeed’s are lighter and way less expensive. The Moots are incredibly over priced. It’s why they advertise on GCN every few months and Litespeed never have. Like Ferrari don’t advertise their cars on TV. So yeah, to sum up. Litespeed, more advanced tube shaping, lighter, less expensive. I also think they look better because they don’t all look the same like the Moots.
100% agree on what you just said. im now riding a litespeed t1sl. was debating between t1sl vs. rsl. its a no brainer. moneywise. technology wise. weight wise. litespeed.
The term "weight weenie" and gravel bike do not belong together. The two philosophies are incompatible. The sooner you can get over that, the better the chance you will steer yourself in the right direction in picking a great lifetime bike - especially if it is titanium, as they are legitimately lifetime bikes. I'm still riding my 1991 Merlin titanium to this day. Just bought a new $7k carbon bike with Campag Super Record, and I scuttled my plans to retire my Merlin and have now shelved my new carbon bike and only use it for time trial positional training. Titanium forever! Don't get caught up with saving grams on a gravel bike. Weight is a good thing (especially on carbon gravel frames, you want a frame at least 1300 grams and a carbon fork 450 grams minimum. Way too many manufacturers trying to peddle road frames as gravel frames). As for titanium, don't hesitate for a second to buy a 1,700-plus gram frame even though some of the lighter titanium gravel frames cone in around 1500 grams. The weiggt difference is insignificant in the overall build of the bike, especially once you start loading your gravel bike down with feed bags and multiple bottles.
@@llandor lol one meaning is that it's something owned, literally the property of: maybe he meant it that way, as such an expensive bike is obviously still property of the company :)
