I don't understand why people say he's so selfish, why they hate him so much... I've seen him inviting Viktor to the spotlight and respecting Viktor's boundaries. Working so hard for everyone else, not to gather power himself. Power only came to him through opportunities to give to others and his environment. And even though I love both characters and understand they have similar yet different motivations, in my opinion, Viktor is more selfish than Jayce even. I like Jayce's character.
I think the "problem" (not actually a problem, but rather what makes his character so good) with Jayce is that he posseses some traits that are typically associated with antagonists and selfish/immoral characters. He is very idealistic, naive and sefless, but he is also a bit narcissistic and arrogant. I can't really think of any other character right now who has that combination of character traits while still being pretty clearly presented as a good person. And somehow a lot of people seem to tend to oversimplify complex characters like Jayce into the exact stereotypes the character was subverting to some degree. Also I think maybe it just rubs a lot of people the wrong way how Jayce is just very privileged, especially compared to almost all of the other characters we are meant to root for in the show. I can see why that might seem unfair because it just is, that's the point, but just having privilege in itself doesn't make anyone a worse person. That unfortunately seems to be something a lot of people at least emotionally disagree with though, even when it's about real people. In a way his privileges might even play a role in why he is so selfless I think, because there's just no need to "selfishly" fight for anything if you already get it handed to you by others (That's just a kinda off-topic thought I had while writing this, sorry if this turned into too much rambling).
I disagree with the “inviting Viktor on the spotlight scene”.. remember this is the same scene when Viktor asked Jayce if he finished his speech and got ignored, plus him putting a cup with his image over Viktor's to the camera view. After the flashback, we see Jayce had more ego than before. Kinda lost his way. Playing while sitting on his chair while Viktor is sick doing all the work. Add to that when he finally became a councillor. I am not saying he is a bad person.. I am just saying he is self absorbed (and yes, one can still be self absorbed while being selfless, just like how some charity workers and benefactors are altruistic narcissists.. a type of narcissism). It is just after Viktor's prognosis that made his feet situated to the ground again. Like we are saying, Arcane is grey, Jayce is not perfectly good and self less as you were trying to say. Ironic because you don't understand why people say Jayce is selfish while you just simply called Viktor selfish LOL.
Viktor is mostly interested in saving his own life with hextech. An extremely valid goal given his circumstances, but him choosing not to destroy it after it killed his assistant shows he prioritizes his own survival over potential detriments. Jayce is by far the most selfless character in Arcane. Only rivaled by Cait and Vander. He wants to help all of Piltover and Zuan if not the entire world, and nearly all of his actions are in service of that goal and helping people large scale at a fast rate. He's definently egotistical and self absorbed too, but that doesn't detract from his selfless goals being genuine.
this. you get it. jayce i never doubted you boo. this is so beautifully done and analyzed (i get so irked when people misrepresent characters) i feel like people got so used to shit writing where we expect the heros to be token good people and villains to be bad… but arcane characters are human. that’s what i love about the show. it’s so undeniably raw and doesn’t shy away from showing the harsh reality. no one is perfect. everyone is a product of their environment. they have their own emotions, intentions, morals… we can act stupidly, recklessly, erratically, naively; but that is so innately human. i initially felt so strongly toward viktor (and still do, as a disabled person and social outcast… his plight just fits) but i think after taking the time to sit down and analyze jayce as a character, i really resonated with him. that constant need to do good and make a positive impact on the word or else you feel useless (like dude almost commit after his work was to be destroyed) but also needing to please the needs and boundaries of those around you. it’s hard to stay 100% true to yourself when the people you’re surrounded by are complex, emotional beings. structured, deep. you may have to do things you aren’t proud of, lose friends you didn’t mean to lose, fuck up your dream, fall behind… but that’s how it is. life is not linear. you need struggle, something to work for, to push through, to motivate you to keep going. it makes me sad that it took s2 for people to start liking him (obv people have their preferences. i was a heimerdinger hater before taking his backstory into account lol) because to me, he’s always been likable. he represents so much that we ALL experience. i know people watch shows just to watch shows but i find them SO much more enjoyable once i unpack everything, ESPECIALLY with good writing. arcane singlehandedly resurrected my writers block
When I see people criticize Jayce, it shows me that they can’t fully comprehend complex writing and their inability to put themselves in the shoes of the character. They judge Jayce as if he has the same knowledge as the viewer does. They don’t understand that all of his decisions are for the good of his people…and once they decide they don’t like him, they become blind to what’s really going on. I’ve watched about 40-50 reactors react to this show, and I’ve seen it first hand. So many of them judge characters based on their love of the other characters. So, if they love Heimerdinger, they hate Jayce for voting him out. Refusing to acknowledge that Heimerdinger had done nothing to improve the situation with the Undercity and couldn’t really understand the importance of making progress because of his long lifespan. Yet, a lot of them turn around and criticize Jayce for “not doing enough for Viktor”, even though his hand was basically forced to vote Heimy out in an attempt to SAVE Viktor. Basically, what I’m saying is, this show and watching people react to it made me realize that some people just can’t grasp complex characters and grey area writing. They think everything is black and white and when something doesn’t fit that binary mold, they FORCE everything into that black and white mold. It’s frustrating because I know this show is a masterpiece and it pains me to see people not give it it’s credit because of a lack of comprehension of what’s actually going on.
There's also frequently an ableist component to it in that they seem to assume Viktor wants constant help/assistance/company, when actually he refuses it multiple times throughout the show. So they blame Jayce for actually respecting Viktor's boundaries and not patronising him.
Jayce is so compelling because he has the best goals and intentions of anyone in the series, but his naivety and impulsive decision making mean a lot of the time his intentions don't yield the best results. If he was both morally pure and a rational and experienced politician and diplomat from the start he wouldn't be nearly as interesting. Instead we see him both succeed and fuck up royally but in realistic ways, before he finally learns the best way to solve their problems (before Silco and Jinx fuck it up).
Thanks for this. Jayce certainly isn't my favorite character in the series, but he is still really good, and he definitely doesn't deserve the amount of hate he gets. Good video.
Happy to see here fellow team Jayce. I love him and it's so sad to see much of the audience write his story off as less than complicated or nuanced just because the difficulty of his path is so different to the others. Rooting for the handsome boy scout is just sadly an unpopular thing these days, but I'm so glad there are videos like this that highlight characters like his.
you know what I realized, everyone is influenced by something/someone, Jayce by the good he encountered when he was a kid, the others by his mindset and good he wanted to bring to the world. Some people don't have that influence until later, by something or someone, just like how Mel changed after meeting Jayce. The strong mindset of someone can change others to think the same, this goes for both evil and good.
I don't know how but Jase will survive. I Like how you represent him. I think if we resonate with characters we can see them deeper. it's good notice about Jase attitude to Caitlyn. Thank you!
I think maybe he build a kind of hextech shield for the council room or some kind of portable device that can auto deploy shields. Remember Vi's last fight with Sevika. Vi's gauntlet automatically deployed a force field without Vi even being aware of it as a function. It's not out of the question that Jayce will have installed a similar function in his hammer.
@@deadmanslastwish while I like your concept with the hextech forcefield I don't think it's there. Would be a cheap copout for season1 finale and also flies in the face of what Ambessa said in the season2 trailer since. It's pretty sure Jayce and Viktor survives. Caitlin's mom dead with the rest of the no names in the council. Mel is an interesting one. Her death could take Jayce and Ambessa to interesting places. But the extra focus on her back-piece glimmering makes me think that has some magical properties that will save the survivors.
@@janosd4nuke I think Mel is the least likely person to survive out of the unknowns. (caitlyn's mom is basically confirmed dead from the trailer of her destroyed seat) Her death will advance the story for both Jayce and Ambessa in a way that I don't think the writers will give up for a cheap plot twist. Jayce's forcefield technology, while unexpected, had at least some set up via Vi's gauntlets. But some random magical protective wear on Mel would be completely out of left field.

I don't like Jayce and this video didn't change it. But I do see now how good of a character he is. Arcane did a great job creating compelling and awesome characters who act not according what the plot needs them to do but according to their own motivations. Amazing.
Here is why many say Jayce is selfish, Jayce believe in his vision often denying reality right infont of him. Case in point storing volatile meterials in his apartment for his experiment. Then later failing to secure the refined hex-gem post time skip. This is further developed post time skip. Jayce's progress day speech ignores workers. Will talk about stamping out corruption one moment then fall in bed with it the next. Finally culminating in his failure to even an attempt to understand what motivates Zaun. In the end Jayce concocts a ludicrously shallow peace plan that serves more to make the Undercity not his/piltover's problem, while imposing terms on silco which would easily see him deposed, and zaun with no defense against Piltover's violence besides Jayce's word. All in exchange for a pound of flesh, which harkens back to the same offer that got Vander toppled ultimately showing there is not much daylight between Jayce and the rest of the council.

No. He's ready to commit suicide after seemingly failing in his goal of bringing magic to everyone as a force for good, corrects Viktor to say that it's both their dream and not just his, is willing to shut down hextech operations for safety at the cost of profit, and tries to bargain for peace with Silco after a single raid (spurred on by Vi) because he sympathizes so heavily with the undercity even if it means losing his spot on the council. His goal is always to help and protect others, even at the cost of his own profit or reputation.
I will truely never understand why the fandom hates Jayce so much…
Because he had Sex with Mel and they didn't.
