      How is a love-letter to consumerism (SW's words) considered progression in any sense?

    • @vo4313
      @vo4313 4 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      @@georgioslymperis6117 the op is referencing a musical progression, not a societal progression. SW is leading in the direction of musical progression in every sense, whilst incorporating lyrical context of the present. If progressive music were intended to be progressive only in a psychological capacity, then inventive works like King Crimsons "Court of the crimson King" and The Mars Volta's "Bedlam in Goliath" couldn't be considered progressive due to their exploration into dated concepts and use of near mideaval melodies Incorporated. Truly progressive music is not only invention, but reimaging or rebranding of otherwise "normal" musical qualities into something unheard of. Send me music that sounds exactly like this song, if you feel this, truly, isn't progressive.

      @JohnDoe-vr9bj 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      lol, I just realised it's a feminised composite image of Steve Wilson. I ain't changing my opinion. That is an image of an extremely pretty person. Not that I'm creeping on Steve or anyone, FWIW, I'm basically a-sexual, with an awkward and largely uneventful bisexual past. Sex is over rated AF. I get more pleasure using drugs in solitude than I ever have through sexual intercourse. But I believe I have very good taste in aesthetics. If it wasn't such a nasty and shallow business, with the right motivation, connections, and luck, I could have been a very successful talent/model scout for all genders.
      If I dare say so, I used to be pretty hot myself in some ways. There were things I hated about my appearance, and I suffered from undiagnosed body dysmorphia (and could also see many of my flaws through a rational and objective perspective. Though some of my self perceived undesirable traits were magnified to the point that I succumbed to periods of intense self loathing; feeling unlovable, and unworthy of existing for my superficiality. Given I was a male soldier in an Army combat ready brigade, I suffered these first world problems in silence. Except when my sexuality, or rather, lack of capitalising on my assets called into question my sexual identity. Being openly gay, or even bisexual was not tolerated, much less accepted in my profession. So naturally, I found love in drugs.
      I wasn't a tease, as such. I never lead anyone on, or tried to hurt anybody. Though I spent so much time training to look like Tyler Durden et.al (3 hours a day of resistance and cardio; plus calorie counting). I would prepare for weekend nights out days in advance like I was prepping for a body building contest, so that I looked extremely lean, with big this veins popping out from my with 8 pack, chest, shoulders, thighs, neck, forehead, forearms, etc... Looking back, I looked like an anatomy chart in a Dr's office lol. But, I was not the hottest guy in the circles I moved in. Not by a long hot.
      But I was honest with people. I knew I was a vapid loser, and that I exercised so much to manage my anxiety, and that my relationship with food was more dysfunctional than my intimate relationships. Yet, the results gave me a slither of confidence, as the attention I received from both women and men were incredibly reinforcing. People I considered way out of my league, not just in appearance, but social success, personal happiness, carefree images were giving me looks with obvious lust in their eyes. That was enough for me. I never felt the need to take action. In fact I was insecure about the size of my penis (in case that wasn't obvious at this point), and my lack of knowledge regarding how to use it, and whether it would perform when required.
      I was content being an a-sexual vol-cel, in the knowledge that many attractive people of both sexes found me to be an unobtainable object of sexual desire, yet honest enough to tell them straight up that I was a phoney, insecure, socially inept, functional idiot. I unironically related to Zoolander. I could really empathise with that character, and he/we made me laugh my arse off.
      Though I had some fun during this 'phase', my motivations and self perceptions were somewhat sexually conservative by todays standards, but very liberal for the era. I did not want to treat partners poorly, or use them, or take advantage of my perceived desirability to try to capitalise on it on the greasy social hierarchy. I just wanted to be seen, and briefly feel desirable, and be comfortable and feel confident around males and females. I was going the wrong way about it. Though I leaned this behaviour indirectly, buy having numerous older (much older) predatory women that were close to our family, essentially grooming me to be a fragile narcissist with low self esteem that was only derived from my appearance.
      It sure beats feeling depressed. That was/is my alternative.
      But I had noting on Steve Wilson's appearance. I wished I could have found a long term partner who looked like Steve in this image. (s)he's not 'perfect', nor everybody's cup of tea, but I see the intrinsic beauty that is clearly more than skin deep.
      But let me tell you, such an unhealthy pursuit takes a physical toll. Injuries, aches and pains in later life, messed up metabolism, and binging behaviour followed by feeling of guilt and shame were part and parcel with the image, and they persist well after the looks have faded. Tho if not for the debilitating injury I've injure this past four years, I would have maintain my physique, and remained attractive.
      But the again, perhaps it was for the best to lose the ability to keep chasing the dragon, and turn introspective and recluse in order to examine who I was, where I came from, what motivated me, and why on earth I bothered. I mean, I'm a short arse at around 170cm anyway. But there are more than enough people within an acceptable +/- range that I never felt my lack of height was a problem. Well not so much that the loss of a couple of body fat percentage points couldn't more that compensate for my genetic limitations.
      Is it a surprise to anybody that I aspired to be a musician, and was very serious about dancing, as it was a way to experience music playing my body like it were an interpretive instrument. I had a disdain for sports, but a love of athleticism. Skateboarding was my favourite physical activity from childhood, until I severely broke my arm as an adult. The bone of the humours has not fused over four years, and the titanium plate is lose as the pins have either come lose, or broken in half. Four years of pain, largely ignored by the medical profession, and woefully untreated with analgesics, that I us heroin on occasion for relief. The stuff I get is as good as it gets, but it certainly isn't a substitute for genuine happiness, or the abstinence of debilitating pain, and the inability to use my arm with precision to play music the way I used to.
      Enough of my petty woes. Thanks, Steve. For your work that provides me with a deep connection to your music, and provides a window into your beautiful heart and mind, and also in this image, your angelic facial features. I don't mean to be creepy. I promise I haven't fapped to your image. For one, it hurts too much and it's far too much work, and more accurately, you're too beautiful for me to objectify you like that. Everybody is, really, though you don't turn me on as much as your inspire a sense of pure awe. It's not a sexual desire that you invoke, but a beauty that is classy and beyond admirable.
      Well sorry for over sharing. I'm sure nobody wanted to read that. However, I enjoyed expressing it. I may even try to use my thoughts and feelings to inspire a song. I've never known what subject I wanted to write about, and of course that has been an impediment to my ability to compose. I have moderate technical proficiency, but that doesn't go far unless it's used to express something heartfelt and meaningful. However, I'm of no illusion that I'll ever achieve any recognition for my music, so it's a good thing that I'm content to embark on such a project with the aim of trying to impress an audience of one. My harshest critic. Myself.

    I really can't understand all the controversy around this song. Personally, I think it's absolutely brilliant. In fact, I'm totally addicted to it. I admire the fact that Steven continues to bring us genre-defying masterpieces and really respect that he does what HE wants and not necessarily what many of his fans want. As an EDM producer, that's exactly what I do, I make the music I want to hear and if people like it, that's cool, and if they don't, that's also cool. A lot of "fans" seem to think that if it's not progressive it must be pop. Sorry to burst your bubble y'all but this song is extremely progressive and it's definitely NOT pop. 80's synthwave? Yes. Pop? Not so much. IMHO, everything Steven touches turns to gold. He makes the music I want to hear, every single album without exception!

No one is going to tell me that Picasso painted paintings to please other people, I don’t believe it! I think great artists make things in a very selfish way, and lesser artists think about their fans and try and provide something to please them. Super catchy, another great song in the Steven Wilson catalogue. I don't get people who hate on Steven's poppier side, he's always had pop influences in his music. For those that hate on this because its not "progressive" I would argue that it's more progressive in a musical sense than most things in the prog rock/metal sphere nowadays. I find it ironic that those who claim to be more musically developed by listening to prog are so narrow minded when they are challenged to listen to anything else.

      This has nothing to do with "challenge" to listen to different music. When it's not my taste, I avoid it. Simple as that. And sorry, but SW's recent direction is really turning me off. We have enough pop "music". So we don't need potentially great musicians to add to that pointless ocean of letting computers create sounds. HCE was a masterpiece. I think, it could just go downhill from there.

    • @smccann1998
      @smccann1998 4 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      @@7thString84 Well you are certainly entitled to your own opinion and I respect that. I don't see it as letting computers make sounds personally. It takes a personality behind that software and machinery to allow it to come to life. While yes there are fewer acoustic instruments on this track as compared to most of his previous works the man has always had a heavy love for electronica. Who knows maybe this album will have a number of great instrumental tracks. For me personally, the difference is giving these artificial sounds a character of their own which I think Steven has done on this song. It's what people have like Nine Inch Nails, Radiohead, Aphex Twin, and countless others have done in the past.
      Who knows maybe you'll grow to love this album, my guess is Steven is just growing tired of using guitar tones heavily on every album, I mean the guy has been doing it for like 25-30 years now, and wishes to test his skills in another area that he loves.

      @@smccann1998 You definitely understand Steven Wilson and art itself. What's the problem with pop? There's bad pop, good pop and Steven Wilson. People should enjoy music for what it is not having stereotypes. Music is like life and life evolves. So what's the problem with this stuck people. There are plenty of bands out there with the same formula over and over. So go listen to them if you're narrow minded. I understand it's a matter of tastes and Mr. Wilson has a widely taste in everything and it influences HIS music. Yeah, because he's doing what he likes and enjoys not what people want to and he has said that in many interviews. I guess this people just stay in the shallow part of music. There was always some "pop" in Porcupine Tree or Steven Wilson. Just because it's the only primitive category of criticism you can think about doesn't mean it has anything to do with it. It shows rather in how few ways you can actually think about music, which is condemning in wanting to praise this at all costs. It is just damn lame and uninteresting. Well it's all relative. I bet Steven Wilson buys a whole lot more stuff than any of us, that many minimalists and anti-consumerists would deem to be over-the-top consumerism. But for him he would say these items are essential - like his extensive record and CD collection. It's easy to judge the buying decisions of other people while we defend our own though.
