probably your best rome 2 battle vid so far. great strategy, loved your preemptive strike with the citizen cav, great units (galatian royal guard) who aren't used a lot anymore, you actually used fire arrows very effectively against something other than elephants which is amazing, and you even zoomed in at the right times, like the rear charge by the ptolemaic cav. well done.
Well thanks, glad you enjoyed it. I got luck in many ways though. These armies are fun, but no silver bullet to be sure. I just like taking different or risky builds. That way if it works out it is more fun. Though it means I get some bad losses sometimes too :)
Big plot twist the tactical genius that has been playing these matches for years has been Miss Heir bum bum buum!!! But really Heir has only been commentating because of his milotic and soothing confident masculine voice.
I wonder if Epirus could do something similar with some sort of combination of elephants, flanking, flaming shot, and beehives. You could name it the "Not the bees!" build.
HeirofCarthage I tested it after Patch 10 and Beehives gave -35 Morale and it lasted about 40 seconds. Snake Pots are mostly for killing and Scorpion Pots are kind of in the middle.
Don't get out flanked by it :) Use your general and other morale boosting units placed wisely to keep morale up. Most scare based armies will have some weak spots and require micro management to be used properly. You could potentially take advantage of that.
that was a pretty consumate victory. Cool to see it start with a cavalry charge to the front, don't see that every day. Also, people could potentially consider calming down about the legionary -aire stuff as well as other observations of pedantic nature. Romans didn't even call them that, but rather "milites" which just means soldiers, or, by legion number undecimiani, tridecimiani etc. f it was my game, it would say something like VIII Cohort, Pannonians, Regulars. And the segmented armor would just be an upgrade. And they would most definitely use both pila while receiving a charge, if set on fire-at-will. I'll just keep dreaming my bitter old man dreams here :)
You are a very good strategist, and I loved the fact that your strongest weapon was fear! However, you had a extremely easy opponent. I dunno what he was playing at! Reckless in a nutshell! ( Video officially liked :) )
awesome! If u make a montage of the finest heir moments, then this should be in it. Wow, i had to watch that twice just to make sure my eyes weren't lying:p
2:00 I call them (legion-airs) aswell and French is a Romance language and therefor is very similar to Latin so it may well be that that is waht they're called.
this was entertaining and informative :D.. great battle Heir, can't wait for the next one Legionaries are a part of a legion -_-.. sometimes people make me disappointed
I think the scare effect in Rome 2 is an awesome addition to the game, but I think it is a little weird how the influence that the elite units have doesn't really matter at that point, which is a little weird because you pay a lot more money for the influence from that unit. Maybe they should add a unit, or buff a certain unit in each faction to give a slight anti fear ability that would give a unit more courage, like maybe the Eagle Cohort, or add in like Druids for barbarians/priest of Ra for Egypt. I don't really know how it all balances out, but that scare is a bit powerful in my opinion. You used it really awesomely in this battle though!
The encourage ability does certainly help, but in this case it just got out weighed by fire arrows + out flanking + sobek cultist unit. If you don't get them out flanked, it won't be enough to take out Roman units usually.
As someone who as studied French as speaks it passably well. i want point out that french is a Latin based language. The way you say it is correct because French Legionnaires are named after the Roman unit of the same name.
I always thought that scare units/effects were more of a novelty or a light support thing but damn that was a devastating demonstration of how powerful they really are.
When they are combined with outflanking and stacked with another morale debuff they are downright lethal. It can be tricky to always get your opponent out flanked, but when you do, it will be a quick battle if done right.
looool, "legion" is a word comming from the latin word "legio" which means "army" so the french just copied the name >< god damn people a little history can take away a lot of awkwardness
Does this game take numbers into account for the scare factor? If it did that would be cool as it would make using larger numbers of less powerful units a possible tactic.
Hey heir, I was wondering what specs u have on yer computer. Like what graphics card and how much memory, what procesor , stuff like that. I was wondering because my computer can handle past high settings without slowing, and yers looks fabulous on what I am assuming to be extreme graphics settings. :-)
Will the scare effect from camels also apply to your own horses? That would make sense, since camels and horses really don't know what ''being allied'' means. I've also heard that it's the scent of camel, that horses are afraid, so wouldn't you just be able to plug the nostrils of the horse so they wouldn't be scared, or disrupt it with some kind of mild smelling salts?
Well things went well for me here. Scare armies will be more effective when an enemy allows themselves to be outflanked or surrounded. When you use a scare army, you have to be quick and decisive or it will backfire usually. I will show more if I can.
Being that flankable does not bode well, basically his missiles were useless and since all the infranty will get tied up the two cavalry units will also perish There might have been some kind of change if he spread out the army and delayed the flanking. Still well played by you
I guess if your opponent chose another formation he could've won. By bringing two lines of infantry - swords in the front, spears in the back - you don't want to charge into that. as soon as the sword infantry is engaged you pull the spear line back and move your archers inbetween. you can "spear box" around your archers. Your legionnaires will win the fight against the galatians. The scare effect won't do much against units that aren't outflanked.
Indeed, Roman units are probably sturdy enough to hold out against fear effect without the out flanked penalty. The cav charge early was kind of a way to make sure he wasn't able to effectively engage my infantry.
Suebi scare armies are lots of fun, but very shakey and very micro intensive. They are either devastating or a complete flop. But they are fun to try :)
I've always liked Suebi but I have trouble getting good builds. Their only really good infantry I find (the Sword Masters) don't compete as good as other infantry that cost roughly 1200. Considering the cost, if I bring a balanced army I seem to lack the infantry ( because I can only bring like 4 SM), but if I bring infantry strong I usually get destroyed by either cav or skrimishers. Maybe it's just my tactics and execution? Then again their other infantry is rather cheap so maybe i should get less SM and try to horde mode with the cheaper shock infantry?
HeirofCarthage Yeah would be great if there was a feature in the game that could apply a subtle change in the skin if two factions played against each other. But then again I suppose it was confusing to tell whos units belong to who historically. For me Civil wars after Ceasar's death was a very interesting period. :) BTW great videos

I personally think that hoplites should be able to stand up to sword infantry a little better, as the cost difference required for a hoplite to beat a sword unit is too high.
A legion is a legion and legionaires are legionaires. If the army is called in such a way then soldiers are called correspondingly so all soldiers of a legion will be ligionaires... french or roman.

i could see your opponent’s strat working if he fanned out before you engaged him but keeping his units stacked up behind his praetorians was pointless seeing as it allowed his praetorians to get swamped in units before it could even get to butchering people
Yes if he would have fanned out, it would have made my task more difficult. If your opponent is in a wide line, try to put pressure on one flank with scare units and maybe just fall back on the other. Once a route is started it is easier to propagate.
Your opponent made horrible micro mistakes. His archers could have decimated yours. If he would have lined up his men he could have met your inf and defeated them. His spears could have intercepted your cav. I would love to see another scare army vs. a tougher opponent.
They can work in many scenarios, it would have taken his archers many volleys to finish my own, time enough to get plenty of flaming arrows off. Though you are correct. A counter charge in formation against my weaker swords with his legions would have been hard to beat back. In order to make sure that didn't happen I charged in my cav early to create the disruption I needed.
HeirofCarthage Yes I am from Henryetta lol. And it probably is, seeing as I am about to graduate and I feel extremely unprepared, but hey I'll figure it out lol.
HeirofCarthage indeed it does! they re two different debuff. you can also put a war cry on top of that. but my bad whistling shot is more like around -12 i think since last patch. still i was spectating a 2v2 with prussianprince and someone else, and they use this combo whistling / fire. some units were down to "1" moral haha so silly. both fire and whistling debuff your own troops. it's a double edged weapon and the unit with the best positioning or quality would take over, however if you have another scare unit around like elephant chariot or that egyptian thing you should be alright. specially if you can have a rear charge with cav. whistling also reduce melee attack i think! and i recently read that people recommend fire against elephant on long range, but whistling on short range. Legionaires and legionaries are different spelling. They are different things. Coming from a historical professional
clone8923 8 Wow, a historical professional. I just looked at your feed and video content, and it does not say professional to me.
A 4 minute battle? Looks like Egyptian Blitzkrieg!
That kinda was their strategy since they rushed with chariots first
I LOVE the Barbarian Victory music. It was my favorite tune in Rome 1 and very glad to hear it again.
Yea it is a good track
Big plot twist the tactical genius that has been playing these matches for years has been Miss Heir bum bum buum!!! But really Heir has only been commentating because of his milotic and soothing confident masculine voice.
lol
I still come back to watch your old R2 vids lol
I wonder if Epirus could do something similar with some sort of combination of elephants, flanking, flaming shot, and beehives. You could name it the "Not the bees!" build.
I haven't used the beehive, snake, or scorpion ballistas much. Their debuff effect doesn't seem to last long enough. I need to try again maybe.
HeirofCarthage I tested it after Patch 10 and Beehives gave -35 Morale and it lasted about 40 seconds.
Snake Pots are mostly for killing and Scorpion Pots are kind of in the middle.
The Romans had "Legionaries" long before the french foreign legion...
No shit bro ?
If I see a "scare" army online, what's the best way to counter it?
Don't get out flanked by it :) Use your general and other morale boosting units placed wisely to keep morale up. Most scare based armies will have some weak spots and require micro management to be used properly. You could potentially take advantage of that.
This battle. Is a Tactical Masterpiece. Very well thought out Heir!
this is like one of the most absolutely smooth victory i have ever seen against from the romans
that was a pretty consumate victory. Cool to see it start with a cavalry charge to the front, don't see that every day. Beautiful. School of Heir schools again. I think Egypt is an underrated faction. I like them. Fear the fear!
2:00 I call them (legion-airs) aswell and French is a Romance language and therefor is very similar to Latin so it may well be that that is waht they're called.
I'm French and yeah I légionnaires is the French word for légionnaires that's it
this was entertaining and informative :D.. great battle Heir, can't wait for the next one Legionaries are a part of a legion -_-.. sometimes people make me disappointed
thanks, glad you enjoyed the battle
The German fear army worked well too in Rome. Good to see you can still use fear armies in Rome II.
Excellent! I loved this battle, please do another fear battle like this one.
The last 2v2 I uploaded they used a Suebi scare army on me. It was pretty cool.
Wow. Fantastic use of scare effects! You should do a similar scare tactic using the Suebi.
It can work, but their infantry is just so shakey. I am trying some different builds with them.
I think the scare effect in Rome 2 is an awesome addition to the game, but I think it is a little weird how the influence that the elite units have doesn't really matter at that point, which is a little weird because you pay a lot more money for the influence from that unit. HeirofCarthage Right, that's true, three negative effects vs. one positive should be able to counter the encourage buff.
Great video.. This was awesome.
You earned a subscriber.
you sir have a right to be proud of that victory. well fought.
very good at talking knows his stuff not boring keeps me in
As someone who as studied French as speaks it passably well. i want point out that french is a Latin based language. The way you say it is correct because French Legionnaires are named after the Roman unit of the same name.
Very interesting video Heir. Thanks.
Your almost at 80,000 congrats
Heir, that was brutal. That was way awesome
I always thought that scare units/effects were more of a novelty or a light support thing but damn that was a devastating demonstration of how powerful they really are.

looool, "legion" is a word comming from the latin word "legio" which means "army" so the french just copied the name >< god damn people a little history can take away a lot of awkwardness
you are so right I was coming down to comment the same thing and saw that you already did it
Or a little bit Latin!
Legio doesnt mean army, its a verb, it means to congregate...
IlCovoDelWhiskey Daniel youre right but you also have the latin word legio, legionis what was the name of their armies
man army (esercito in italian) in latin is exercitus, legione or legio doesnt mean army but a part of the army :)
wow.. that was a major kick in the wingding. your army is "scawey"
Very very very good use of the fear effect
10/10 use of egypte
Hey Heir, out of curiosity if you used both an Elephant general and a Sobek cultist do you know if the scare effect stacks?
A really good battle
A good way to fight
Exellent
Hey HeirofCarthage i have a question i see you are in TGN in your Advice should i move to TGN or stay in Freedom
Does this game take numbers into account for the scare factor? If it did that would be cool as it would make using larger numbers of less powerful units a possible tactic.
Really nice the way you did that.
Play Suebi soon plz, could also be a good showcase of scare effect.
From a historical point of view, didn't the Egyptian and Nubian archers used poisoned arrows?
Not sure, but if they did i would be cool to see them in the game.
Hey heir, I was wondering what specs u have on yer computer. Like what graphics card and how much memory, what procesor , stuff like that. I was wondering because my computer can handle past high settings without slowing, and yers looks fabulous on what I am assuming to be extreme graphics settings. :-)
It you go to my channel and click on the "about" tab they are there.
Will the scare effect from camels also apply to your own horses? That would make sense, since camels and horses really don't know what ''being allied'' means.
I've also heard that it's the scent of camel, that horses are afraid, so wouldn't you just be able to plug the nostrils of the horse so they wouldn't be scared, or disrupt it with some kind of mild smelling salts?
well fact is horses from the Arabian areas are not really sensitive to camel since they are used to the smell.
well if the same army uses both camels and horses then that armies horses would be used to the camels.
Yea theoretically armies using camels would have been able to acclimate their horses to them.
Everything just went so fast in that battle
o and also your the reason that inspired me to get total rome war 2
I'd really like to see you use a Egyptian scare army again, i haven't had much luck with them and would like to see another example of your tactics.
Well things went well for me here. Scare armies will be more effective when an enemy allows themselves to be outflanked or surrounded. When you use a scare army, you have to be quick and decisive or it will backfire usually. I will show more if I can.
That makes a lot of sense, thanks.
Rome v Egypt at Stonehenge...
Awesome battle and explanation
Here's how I pronounce legionary as an English. "Legion-ree Titus Pullo"
Is the morale penalty relative to how much flaming arrow fire is hitting that unit? Should you focus fire or spread the effect across a line?
+Sol Hamer I think it's probably just a flat moral dmg.
Being that flankable does not bode well, basically his missiles were useless and since all the infranty will get tied up the two cavalry units will also perish
There might have been some kind of change if he spread out the army and delayed the flanking. Still well played by you
Rodian slingers or Cretian archers?
I guess if your opponent chose another formation he could've won.
By bringing two lines of infantry - swords in the front, spears in the back - you don't want to charge into that. as soon as the sword infantry is engaged you pull the spear line back and move your archers inbetween. you can "spear box" around your archers. Indeed, Roman units are probably sturdy enough to hold out against fear effect without the out flanked penalty. The cav charge early was kind of a way to make sure he wasn't able to effectively engage my infantry.
Good stuff, more scare army's please :)
I am tinkering with some Suebi builds. They haven't been very easy to use yet, but still trying them.
What pc is he using? I really want to buy a fresh new pc, give me a good pc for total war rome 2 and Skyrim?
They're part of a Legion anyway so it is correct.
Try another suebi scare army !
You have berserkers, night stalkers, flaming germanic youths, with noble cav. That's some good shock. With a zeal gen.
Yeah, suebi scare army can be very potent too.
Suebi scare armies are lots of fun, but very shakey and very micro intensive. They are either devastating or a complete flop. But they are fun to try :)
I've always liked Suebi but I have trouble getting good builds. Their only really good infantry I find (the Sword Masters) don't compete as good as other infantry that cost roughly 1200. will i still be able to verse you if i don't have the dlc
How would the horses breath then? Its not easy as easy for them to breath through their mouths like we can
sobek cultists? we cant all have free DLCs like you Heir! some of us cant afford to get the extra units. Id love to be able to use the scare effects
That's like the perfect win!
Hey hier, I'd like to know how you deal with horse archers, I seem to always loose vs anyone who has lots of horse archers... :(
Slingers, and lots of them :) Behind pikes preferably.
Thanks, I'll try it out :D!!
I have just bought the game and i have one question. Is there story mode? if the answer is yes how can i play it?
Heir, you are so nice. And try so hard not to step on people's toes. Lighten up
Would be interesting how you would handle Roman v Roman battle :)
I haven't fought one in long while. They are fun, but sometimes hard to tell whos units belong to who
HeirofCarthage
Yeah would be great if there was a feature in the game that could apply a subtle change in the skin if two factions played against each other. But then again I suppose it was confusing to tell whos units belong to who historically.
For me Civil wars after Ceasar's death was a very interesting period. :)
BTW great videos
Well we call the roman soldiers Legionaire same thing
@ HeirofCarthage couldyou tell us what is the game version ?? , build ?? , please ??
It is just the standard version of Rome 2. I have DLCs but I don't run mods except on campaign. And that is only to get 4 turns per year.
It's LegionarIES. Cause 1 Legion is more than just the cohort. so when you have 3 cohorts of legionaries, it's 3 legionaries.
What changes do you think should be made to Rome 2 (in terms of units)
The game is pretty good right now actually. I think that if pikes pushed forward with attack orders then that would be great. Rome's infantry is a little too cost effective also. Again, the game is in fairly good shape.
I personally think that hoplites should be able to stand up to sword infantry a little better, as the cost difference required for a hoplite to beat a sword unit is too high.
this was a great battle
lol on 5:25 a camel came from no where after the charge of the tolome cav(lol my pronuntiation is bad but funny)
You know fire arrows effect your units as well, right?
Indeed. If you are outflanking though the impact will be greater to your opponent.
I don't know what the advantage of that Roman block formation.
A legion is a legion and legionaires are legionaires. If the army is called in such a way then soldiers are called correspondingly so all soldiers of a legion will be ligionaires... french or roman.
+Omegaures The difference between Lee-Jun-Air-E and Lee-Jun-Air is the difference between Hop-light and Hop-lee-tey.
Kira Reilly "Lee-Jun-Air-E and Lee-Jun-Air" You got me hella fucking confused right there... I was there for 20 seconds thinking... wtf is he saying... even with... "Hop-light and Hop-lee-tey" I was like wtf is he on about...

But anyway, back to us:
Besides the fact that what you stated doesn't pertain in any way shape or form to what I said, but I'll ignore that and go on with this.
Legionnaire, or Legionary have their own english plurals... Legionnaires and Legionaries
To put it in your words
Lee-Jun-Air-Es and Lee-Jun-Airs...
They are not one the plural of the other...
The same goes for Hoplite... which doesn't have 2 different written forms like Legionnaire, but has one written form that depending purely on accent can be pronounced in either way.
If you are instead looking for Latin and Aincient Greek forms of the words in the singular and plural of the Nominative cases:
legionarius-legionarii
hoplites-hoplitai
So... not only is your comment completely out of place and unrelated to what I said... but... it is also incorrect under all aspects...
Do suebi fear army next
1:26. . . the minute that you realised it could be pronounced that way. Lol.
Indeed. ;)
How does egyptians have galic warriors in there army? (i dont play rome)
The Ptolemaic Pharaos let celtic tribes settle in their lands after those had followed Macedon east on Alexanders conquests...
Man I wish Kemet(ancient Egypt) and their culture still existed today. And I wish I was son of their nation.good video btw
Wish I had this game.
for all of you who discuss about how you pronounce Legionaries. latin is a dead language, that means No one knows the correct pronunciation of any latin words
A legion is a unit, so the french legion is almost the same thing as the roman legions
You should do a fight between Prince of Macedon and You ( Your Carthage he is Macedon
just like that im french and the foreing legion its légion étrangère and roman legionary in french its légion romaine its the same words
i could see your opponent’s strat working if he fanned out before you engaged him but keeping his units stacked up behind his praetorians was pointless seeing as it allowed his praetorians to get swamped in units before it could even get to butchering people
Yes if he would have fanned out, it would have made my task more difficult. If your opponent is in a wide line, try to put pressure on one flank with scare units and maybe just fall back on the other. Once a route is started it is easier to propagate.

Stonehedge in background!
Egypt 🇪🇬❤️
Idk Heir, we are both from Henryetta and I call them Legionaries lol.
lol you are from Henryetta? And yes it could be a result of the Henryetta school system.
HeirofCarthage Yes I am from Henryetta lol. And it probably is, seeing as I am about to graduate and I feel extremely unprepared, but hey I'll figure it out lol.
legion is a latin word, Romans were legionaires before france.
pure domination.
3:55 pway
Your opponent was also 7 years old ....
you just cannae-d them!
Something something something salt on Carthaginian soil.
Nice..
OMG completely massacred them that was awesome
Grammar mistake in description.
The roman guy was so stupid honestly none would do such a defensive charge
A legionnaire or legionary is a roman soldier.
brillance
Dont listen to people about legionaries being exclusive french word. It isnt.
imagine if you had whistling shot in there, another -25 moral :o
just trade two of those archers for a cretan :p
Does it stack with flaming shot? Only problem with whistling shot is if it passes over your own men they get the debuff as well.
(would make them route, not run amok apparently)
yo Heir say it or anything however you want. It doesnt matter stuff like that is ever changing and really isnt anything worth peoples time.
