Even though Capaldi's Doctor & River Song only appeared together for this story, they had some of the best chemistry together here. Also, a subtle detail people sometimes miss is when The Doctor gives River Song her Sonic Screwdriver, he appears to scan her with it, which allows Tennant's Doctor to upload her digitally into the Library's mainframe back in Season 4.

Here is the entire paragraph from River in Forest of the Dead, because I just absolutely love this (also with the "new haircut and a suit")
"Funny thing is, this means you've always known how I was going to die. All the time we've been together, you knew I was coming here.
The last time I saw you, the real you, the future you, I mean, you turned up on my doorstep, with a new haircut and a suit.
You took me to Darillium to see the Singing Towers. What a night that was.
The Towers sang, and you cried. You wouldn't tell me why, but I suppose you knew it was time. My time. Time to come to the library.
You even gave me your screwdriver. That should have been a clue."

The important thing about the gift of the screwdriver is not just that he includes the chip but that he scans her with it to make the connection to the bio chip thing. It comes of as a cute thing but it was critical to make the thing work.
I love that Deepa still comes to the door playing Christmas music
Honestly, this Chan-tho is the best when it comes to Christmas reactions! I love that you guys celebrate with each other for each special, and I just adore your friendship overall. Luke and Deepa forever! 🫶
I love River Song. I wish we had seen more of her. I never understood why she disappeared when Amy and Rory did.
Deepa is a national treasure.
She is customer service to the world.
My favorite Xmas special no question. Yes I am a total sucker for River, and River & The Doctor, so I def have bias, but it's fantastic nonetheless.
The Doctor finally getting to laugh again, and be silly and happy, that "Hello Sweetie" and "...when you need it the most, there is a Song." moments all get me crying. One of the most immense ways to say "I love you" without saying it at all.
The moment immediately before the 'hello sweetie', when he has realized she doesn't really know he loves her, and she hasn't quite worked out who he is...

“A Christmas Carol” is still my personal favourite Christmas special, but this is a close second for me. The shift from the wacky panto screwball comedy vibes of the first half to the more melancholic bittersweet romance of the second was perfectly done. It’s a nice respite from the intensity of the last few episodes, and ties up both the overarching story of series 9 and the Doctor and River’s story perfectly. Plus, the chemistry between Peter Capaldi and Alex Kingston is just wonderful, and it makes me wish we got more stories with the pair of them
Also my favorite two Christmas specials. They just give that warm Christmas feeling. Both solid episodes.

Silly and chaotic? True, but it still has my favorite "Hello, Sweetie." moment in the series. The Sixth Doctor and Peri use TARDIS "seatbelts" in (I think,) Timelash, and believe me, you're better off not seeing them. 😊
I forgot how crazy, disgusting, funny and fun this episode was. Everything I love about Doctor Who. I think Steven Moffat miss a chance here in between series 9 and 10 to make series 10 about The Doctor and River last days together and having River as a companion and then make series 11 with The Doctor and Bill.

Not THE best Christmas special for me, but certainly a top contender. The Doctor being devastated when he learns River thinks he doesn't love her actually hurts.
You definitely need to let Deepa watch whole River Song's life compilation that puts it all in order.

This is one of my favourite episodes. Love having River Song again. Sad that her next stop is The Library😢
13:10 To be fair most people don't remember, but after rewatching it so many times some parts stick to you. But also this episode specifically is great on a rewatch, when you also see the original River episode. Because they make so many line references here.

It’s a cute episode if you suspend disbelief but Moffat really made riversong completely unintelligent in this episode
I think it actually makes sense for her to be a bit dumb in this episode. She knows her life is coming to an end and she's sad about that. She doesn't want it to be the end.
Also to River being possibly dumb to Capaldi being the Doctor, she knows that the Doctor has a limited life span and so she wouldn't have considered the possibility that he was the doctor
@@lilianaserno3014 but there were very clear massive flashing red flags that he definitely was.
There’s a precedent…Lois Lane😉 But, seriously, as far as River knows the doctor can only have 12 faces. She doesn’t know about the new cycle of regenerations. She’s so focused on her plan that she’s just not getting the hints. Loved it…because you know she’s going to figure it out eventuallyand the scene when she does realize it is just perfect😊
How are we to remember that?? Why are you watching? There are references to previous episodes and even classic episodes all the time. The show is a continuing story from the 60's yea know. I remember what happened in the first episode. Don't worry. The story ends with Capaldi. After him, history gets changed out of the blue because of peoples minority politics. Enjoy the last TRUE Doctor.
