I subscribe to a lot of TH-cam channels but can say for a fact that the dirt head shed is the only one I get genuinely excited for. Feels like DED still lives on.
Stoked you are enjoying it!
@@thedirtheadshedI'm back and currently watching. I hope you see this. Look up a product called Poppy's Patina. Would make this truck really shine
I like Poppy’s products. Very nice
I second that. I'm hooked on Dirt...
Back in my minitruck days I had an 86 Nissan that I bought brand new. Then in 2015 I bought a new 2015 Nissan. To say the ride was different is an understatement but I'd still like to have an 86 again. It was the last of the 720s before the hardbody came out.
I started off with a bulletside I bought used and fixed up. I put a 3.1 gm v6 with throttle body fuel injection with a 5 speed from a camaro in it. Always wanted to get a 3.4 out of a later camaro and drop in it keeping the MPFI with maybe a small turbo. Sold it and got a hardbody. Really wish I would have kept that bulletside and parked it on the back 40 until I had a better job and could afford to really do it justice. The kid that ended up with it totaled it out 2 weeks after he got it.
Those 720s with the American bed have such good style
Ok Dave. I wash for a living. To remove any growing organic matter easy the key is kill it. Pool shock mixed one to three parts water put in a pump sprayer. It will turn white and come off easy as pie. If you coated the entire truck it would was up so easy.
Great truck brother.
I also think a good splash of vinegar in your wash bucket would help too
I bought a D50 new in 1984. Lowered it, wide wheels, air dam DIY exhaust and cold air.
Now I want another one!
I fully support this
I have a 1980 Dodge D50 that my grandpa bought new in 80. After he passed I ended up with it and I take it to a few car shows every year. Thank you for showing that sport off. I wish I could find a new front grill and rear bumper.
You may have some luck calling transmission shops/speed shops/parts stores(autozone) etc in your local area.
@@xprettylightsx for a grill and bumper? Okay
That little nugget cleaned up so good
It really did. I’m happy with it
Mini trucks and pressure washing. What a satisfying combo
Man, I wish I could watch this video. Always get excited when Dave drops a new video. Currently out wheeling with poor phone service 😅
Have fun out there!
@4:40 I think you have a preference in color for your trucks... LOL! Love seein the work it takes to bring a simple car or truck back to life.
Haha. Yeah. Seems like red is the color of choice right now
Such a rad little truck! I'd daily that thing every day that I could!
That’s the goal!
My grandpa had on of these and we drove it to the Shippensburg farmers market every Thursday loaded up. Fun little truck!
Those are good memories
@@thedirtheadshed yup! grandpa was a bit of a wild man though LOL
Had a blue 86 that was a hand me down, 92 I had a huge Stereo system put in, lowered. The back wall was cut out, bed was one big speaker box with 4 12s. around 95 I lifted it. was so fun.
We all had the stereo phase!
Patina is just that, it is what it is. Truck is a gem.
Awesome little truck my uncle had a 1986 D50 4x4 manual. So many memories and places it went cool to see one still around
It’s a little time capsule
1985 4WD still used as my daily driver!!!
Reese's is a killer whip. TDHS is one of my favorite channels.
Glad you’re digging it!
@@thedirtheadshed Dig it? Brother, it's so much fun to watch your hi-jinks. Frankly, cannot wait to see the Mustang and slammed truck again.
I need to get back to that!
Glad to see you are into these trucks - I have owned my 1980 D-50 Sport since new. Couple of things - the gear oil in the tranny has to be GL-4 - the synchros will dissolve if you use GL-5. For more power, a Weber 38 DGES carb kit from Redline really wakes the truck up, along with a header. You also should adjust the valves - they probably haven't been touched and they are manual adjustors. Not a fan of cutting off the upper bump plates, as that causes hyperextension of the ball joints - uniballs will help with the ride.
Just fyi guys if you didn’t know HBO max has almost EVERY Motor trend show. Including Roadkill/Roadkill Garage/Dirt Every Day/Roadworthy Rescues/Engine Masters etc….
I love that little truck ! I have a buddy that put a Chrysler 360 in one years ago .
That would be fun
A wise old man told me, always break loose the fill plug first
I did that in my 2019 Colorado traveling to Wyoming 20-21’ for my grandmother. I would take my bike because there is a lot of bare hwy and country with no cell service.
I would also have it so I could travel in my bike for a couple days food and water. You are your only outlet always take my mtb bike. Good for you handling your business!
@@CasperRc81always have a backup plan
3:16 I can’t believe those tiedown bars are still in the bed. I remember as a kid holding onto them while my parents were driving. Those were the good days.
Congrats Dave! What a sweet truck. Really cleaned up NICE.
I love the carrier bearing fix. I've use a tube of 3M Window Weld to fill motor mounts in a similar way.
That’s a good tip
@@thedirtheadshed Thanks! Yeah, you can get it in a caulk tube so you can really squeeze it in to small spaces. Or if you can get the mount out, tape up the bottom side and pour in two part urethane like ReoFlex 50.
Love watching your work. I'm a professional exhaust guy and its always cool to see what you're doing
I miss my exhaust business
D50 is coming along really well! Good for you! Might be in the minority here, but I think you gotta get the factory wheels back on. Lowered like this, it’s gonna look even better!
There are a lot of you. I think im the odd man out that doesn’t like the orange wagon spokes
@@thedirtheadshed Orange wagon spokes and those stripes are killer! And always remember, chrome won’t get ya home…🤣
A 1 hour Dirthead Shed on a rough Friday. Man this came in clutch today
Kickoff to a great weekend hopefully!
Thank you and Fred. For continuing a better Dirt Every Day.
Saw you pull out on the highway today 7/3 truck looked good man! Keep up the good work!
Thanks! It a fun cruiser
Dave needs to hook up with Lucky Costa. You guys been doing the real work behind these shows for years. You two together would build something incredible
I haven’t talked with him in quite a while. Thanks for the reminder
@@thedirtheadshed love the d50 also. I remember them trucks running around as a kid. And letting go of the Ford truck is a smart move. You proved you can do those too that’s a bad ass one. But now you can do something more you.
That's a very cool truck! Great video!
Wow! I use that same white brush with the blue bristles at Dominos to wash dishes.
Great minds think alike
Wow Big A autoparts brake shoes ! Worked at one back in the 90s while in high-school
It's a huge production
It’s a small production but it’s a lot of work
Dave, as always, good stuff
Glad you enjoyed it
I used to have a little Toyota that I lowered and hated when it would squat whenever I would load up the bed so I just used help her bag shocks and if I hold something heavy, I’d throw some air in it level her back up.
Yep. They help a little
Love that truck!
Same. It’s kinda stealing the show
You sure don't need to bag anything else... but you kinda need to bag that perfect little truck
It would make it That much cooler

Also when you don’t know them - Me
Don't weld on shocks. Welds on shocks. 🤣🤣🤣🤘🏼
Red trucks kick ass!
For parts look at Mitsubishi Mighty Max, buddy had one in High School we went to the Junkyard and pulled parts off the D50 for it both are the same truck.
I hear windshield urethane works good to fix those isolators. Motor mouth etc.
hey Dave...I've had a few older Mopars...it's interesting that Mitsubishi chose to run the front stabilizer-lower control arm rods that were prominent in Dodges D-100 chassis'....perhaps there was some corporate influences eh
speaking of ... how do they look?...the dry rot makes for shite handling...the exhaust looks good man...sounds good
Strut rods like that were used on almost all of the import trucks. And ford cars. Pretty prominent design for a long time
Man i wish i kept my D-50 years ago always looking for another one but haven't seen one in a long time
You need a few more red(ish) trucks!
I’m stock full of em
this makes me want to dig my 720 out of the back yard now
Do it!
Isn’t moss a patina, I just watched a video that you mentioned it? Fun stuff.
From where I think you where at in Washington that's a 7 hour drive yeesh. I live in the bend area.
Dig this. Wanted my gramp's D50 but my uncle sold it for $500 before asking me if I wanted it :-(
Booo
need some guni wheels for the shop !
I never understood the reason for lowering vehicles, other than appearance.
That’s it!
How has Matt never seen Ivan Ironman Stewart’s Super Off Road?
Not a clue…. It was everywhere when I was younger
@@thedirtheadshed Tens of dollars spent at Round Table.
Hey Mr Dave, just for the record, I own an '86 D50 and... You owe it to yourself to pull out those inner bed panels. I can pretty much guarantee you that they are full of sand, dirt and debris. If left in there, it will rot out your bed.
This doesn’t have any inner bed panels
@@thedirtheadshed pretty sure it does, screws are hard to see though. They're behind those horizontal round tubes that go out from the fender well.
I stand corrected. I went back and watched the video really close when you were pressure washing the fender well in the bed. It doesn't appear that yours has the inner panels, like you said. I guess they varied a bit year to year. Still a super cool little truck though. I also have an '84 B2000, an '81 Datsun 210 wagon and a '77 Datsun 620 KC. Love your channel. @@thedirtheadshed
Maybe they used them in the 85-86 right before the new body style.
@@thedirtheadshed that seems like a reasonable theory, let's go with that LOL
If you reinstalled the rear leaf you took out wouldn’t the pickup have its carrying capacity back ? Without the air shocks
Yeah. But it would also be 2” higher and that’s not acceptable
@@thedirtheadshed I meant only temporarily till you put a complete custom air ride on all four corners .
Dave, is that the 2.0 or 2.6L? There maaaay be fuel pumps kinda near you....
It’s a 2.6
@@thedirtheadshed car-part shows a used fuel pump in Shelton WA (It's used and probably old... but maybe it'll work for the foreseeable future!?!)
love this truck and love your channel but please please PLEASE never mix cleaning products like that. Its a fast track to make shit that will kill you very quickly or make you have a very bad time for the rest of your life.
Ok. Noted
@@thedirtheadshed yeah bleach is super reactive stuff, and reacts with a lot of other chemicals to make really nasty things like nerve gas or mustard gas or various carcinogenic acids. Its really not great.
i love the channel i came over from Vice Grip and loved the Collab with Derik on the old ford and the road worthy rescue episode with the red dually you slammed . love your work uncle Dave
Thanks! Glad to have you over here
@@thedirtheadshed my pleasure Sir and thank you for all the hard work you do to bring us with you . 😎
Same! I love saving neglected pickups. My wife does not understand 😝
Tip for those from the rust belt. Always remove the fill plug before the drain plug. If the fill plug ends up stuck and you drained the diff, it really sucks.
I was thinking the same thing. The diff was fine but the body on that transmission is probably aluminum. Usually with the right tools you can get the fill plugs out, but old oil is better than no oil.
Always this.
@@Fix_It_Again_Tony Needs about 2.2 litres of 75W90 for the gearbox and don't ovretighten the level plug!!!
Replace every 40,000km.
And never tow in 5th gear.
Then you end up flipping the truck so you can fill it from the bottom 🤣
We do that every time!
I used to watch you with Fred before MotorTend left TH-cam. So glad to find you again with VGG. I hope this channel explodes, Great videos and work !! Keep em rollin !
Thanks for the support over all the years
So sorry about the buzzing audio in the last few episodes. Trying fix that now.
I saw your reel comparing the truck colors to Reese's but I instantly thought of A&W restaurants when I first saw it. The A&W mascot's name is Rooty, not a bad name for a truck!
That’s not bad
Just when you think that the channel couldn't possibly be any more satisfying to watch, Dave goes ahead and breaks out the pressure washer to clean up a mossy old truck.
Dude. I was on the edge of my seat
You inspired me to finally build a car (Lexus IS300 Rally-esque vehicle) and attend a Gambler event a few years ago. I recently sold the Lexus and bought an AWD Astro for my future Gambler exploits. Rock on, Dave!
So cool! Always be gambling
I love you using beware of darkness “howl” on your channel. 🤙🏻
It’s a good one
Just saw you on the GrindHard podcast. What a great interview. Keep making the videos that you want, we'll keep watching
I love the talk of "if I airbag it" because we're all still following along waiting for the Hard body to be finished! lol never change Dave!
You reminded me… I need to work on the Nissan
But also every high school car guy said "when i get the money ill do XYZ"
Would have gotten better gas mileage back when it was new because the speed limit was more than likely still 55mph everywhere so you were turning significantly lower rpm's using less gas. Bought my first new vehicle in the 80's. It was 1988 Toyota 4x4 in 87. Was a great truck.
The oddball stuff like this D50 and the Mustang II are awesome. Also love a good road trip.
It's hilarious that a little tiny truck like that even has a carrier bearing
Yep. Kind of long driveshaft though
This dude deserves a lot more subscribers...if your watchin...hit the button for him.
I appreciate the support!!
I didn't get to watch until Saturday. Kool vid. That's a nest little truck. I'm ready too see the newest little suv to the fleet, and butter Jeep, and the Mustang 2, good lord..lol. so many rigs...
had the same truck, a Plymouth arrow, Mitsubishi made , so easy to work on, mine had the orange wagon wheel rims
That truck sits so perfect AND the paint scheme is so awesome
It’s got mad style
I love when the canola fields are flowering. So beautiful! A lot more interesting to look at than wheat. It's nice seeing local scenery on a channel.
I have a childhood memory of this truck and it's my dad's he had the yellow one and apparently he had too much of a lead foot so they literally like to throw timing chains apparently so you might want to make sure that's in good shape
Sounds like you need a yellow d50
Sorry for the random comments, just trying to help the algo
I appreciate them all
For any noobies out there watching: always take the full plug out first, so you know you can. :)
Shifter top cover is always an option
@@thedirtheadshed would be pretty tough to use the shifter on the differential :)
Only. You would slam it before you even cleaned it .shows your priorities are in the right place.
Keeping it crusty
I had a 2000 Nissan Frontier that developed a bad carrier bearing and MAN would I have liked to know about this hack at the time. I just ended up dealing with the shaft slapping the cab floor every time I decelerated heavily while in gear.
Man I love that little truck! So rad to see it out roaming about!
Living its best life
I miss my 85 Toyota pickup, was my first new vehicle, but becoming a father, had to make the right decision. Love my son more though.
I’m sure you can make room for another mini truck in the future
@@thedirtheadshedyes I can for sure.
Love the colors. You should shine juice it.
I may just polish it
Imagine this with a gen 3 srt hemi in it. Be pretty awsome imo
That would be wild
I always get a kick out of the NOS parts. They’re probably as good or better than ones you’d get from current stock.
Oh yeah, agreed
Dude you're making content quicker than I can watch it! happy you went independent your channel rocks!!
Thanks so much! It’s a hustle
58:15 he may not know Ivan Stewart is but he’s undoubtedly played Ivan Stewart’s Super Off Road in a arcade.
Such a great game
Derrick should have hooked you up with some of his Shine Juice!!
Looks like a Ritzville fill-up? That drive along 84 I've done so many times and it is always equally ugly until you get to about The Dalles. Then it is gorgeous all the way to the ocean. LOVE YOUR VIDEOS!!!
Would've thought udve made some tabs and added the airshocks as a second set......since it's a heavydoody.....paaaarrrrr-taaaay.....
Keep it light and nimble
Don't weld on shocks.....sizzle sizzle. They can blow up on you.....sizzle sizzle sizzle 😂
But for real. I don’t recommend it
Nice, I almost bought the same truck a few years back, but living PA, you won't find anything that nice. I see trucks costing $5000 and up, and it needs a new frame. Prices are crazy. Seen the onX build, seen the VVG collab, next is a Casey collab, your not far away... hint hint..
You know a plane ticket is cheaper than rust repair..
Is this the Pizza Hut truck Tony Hawk drives in Gleaming the Cube?!
I think he had a Mazda b2000
Lichen the d50…🤦🏻♂️
Hahah.. that’s my joke
Dave! Would you do a complete nerd-out (with all the details/reasons/tech) on a 4-link suspension build for us? You're like the ninja-master at knocking-out 4-links....it'd be fun and cool to learn the details.
This might be a good rig for that
If the ol 4 banger gives out can confirm a 302 plus manual from a 91 fox body does fit with minimal cutting of the transmission tunnel and crossmember was easy to mod engine mounts just required some massaging but a easy job and driveshaft adaption was easy now if the rearend dies a toyota truck,4runner rear axle from 1980-1990 6 lug is the same track width and easier to find a gear set for better rpm range.
It the rear axle dies this will go 5 lug so I have some wheel options
Any one else do a 4G63T swap into their D50? This is my absolute favorite truck.
If it bolts easily to this trans it would be a hoot
Painting the grill black would look great! Maybe touching up the bumpers black too.
All those little details add up
Now im scrounging market place for a ram 50 or mighty max. Gee... thanks Dave
You deserve to treat yourself
This truck brings back so many memories of my dads 79 D50. That little Japanese truck did stand a chance in Michigan winters though.
Yeah. Nothing really does
Couple years back I had an '86 D50 with 86k original miles. That's the one vehicle I regret I sold to this day.
Hard to replace
I had an 84 d50 that was 4WD I loved that thing!
If that truck has a 2.6 liter engine keep an eye on the timing chain. If the tensioner goes bad it can blast aluminum shavings all through the oil system
I always liked body color inside the engine bay, it sets off the engine compartment if it`s a brighter color than black.Cali. stuff continues to blow me away.
I agree. Black engine bay is boring
Love these longer videos!
