Metalwork feel like the more expensive but better carpentry. Metal parts are more rare compared to wood. The way I think could make it more relevant is to introduce more use to metal work like forging new weapons and armors, upgrades car.
It kinda does feel like it but like you said blacksmithing and car upgrades would make the skill more viable. They will add those things in new builds but it's just a matter of when really xd
The best container is the skill "organized" this is how you get 49 capacity back packs, 650+ trailers, 76 slot wooden crates and 108 metal crates. It's a flat +30% to ALL storage space. If you are a loot goblin this is your bread and butter skill...but the real secret to zomboid is knowing you don't need any of this. Over encumbrance will get you killed. You will never use those 50 m9 magazines and damaged m14s. Lol
No one uses it? I do. It is the only way to fix your car up to nearly mint condition. Yes, you waste material if you build metal boxes because it is easier to build wooden crates, even though you have 20 units less storage. I am currently at level 8 metalworking because you can build everything at this point.
the car mods really are what make me metalwork to make the addons + auto mechanics mod to make training as easy as having a few junkyard cars for your yard
When I got a car with decent truck + trailer I go out on highway to dismantle these wrecked cars. It's nice to have clear highway to be able drive sports car occasionally and also gives bunch xp and materials for the base. Also school lockers are good since they're close to each other and little to no zombies around. Little tip here: bring or empty your backpack and take everything from the lockers beforehand and dump it somewhere ( save headphones and cd players for dismantle ). It's gonna be easier dismantling lockers!
Thx for sharing some tips ^^ Clearing wrecked cars is pretty good both for clearing roads and leveling up but they take a lot of propane so you just need enough propane to do it. Clearing lockers is a pretty good idea as well it's my go to method when it comes to leveling.
Hey, metalworkers unite. There are two mods I know of rn that add in forging weapons and armor, but only the Wizcraft "cheat" mod makes it work off metalworking. The other one adds a Smithing skill. I know that just because I can tig weld, doesn't mean I can forge iron, but you aren't a welder, you're a metalworker. So I prefer smithing/forging to work off metalwork. There used to be forging in Vanilla, too, from what I've heard.
Fixing the car is nice, but I mostly use metalworking for the metal crates and large chain-link gate. Oh, and putting metal bars over my windows :D Very useful skill!

well, the thing is, sure almost no one uses metalworking, but its most because its hard to level up the skill if you compare with Carpentry, and the materials its not so Abundant too, and we don't have any interessing things to do with this skill in vanilla game, just with mods, sure making you base with metal is something, but you do the same carpentry, and is more easy too

Is it just me or does it seem like propane is way too scarce? I have collected a few propane tanks from bbq grills but outside of that, I only ever found 1 in a garage. It takes a whole propane torch worth of fuel to dismantle 1 car. So you can clear the roads and then have no fuel left to do anything useful.
Yeah propane is kind of scarce. You can also check warehouses for propane but still clearing roads might be really hard with the amount of propane in the world. If it's a modded playthrough, I add some kind of a mod to make things better like crafting propane or an alternate method to get propane.
They should make welding a big part of repairs to metal weapons and improvements to weapons. Soon im sure they will. It's a skill to use a lot. Mods make it a massive important skill. Sure for vanilla it doesn't seem too great. Yet you're using it all wrong. Yes wood is easy and fast. Yet durability is just bad if we are talking fortifying. I haven't begun trying yet to build because tactically. I can avoid most problems and I'm not always in danger being out in the farm lands. I can think of to many ways to use metal working.
Didnt you used to level metal working without using up the propane torch? since when i deconstruct things it takes usage out of my torch when it didnt used to proberly about 7 months ago feel like it was changed.

ITs not so much that no one uses Metaworking, rather, the materials can be so rare. And difficult to carry, in bulk. Takes more grinding then regular carpentry, really..
That's definitely one of the reasons people shy away from metalworking but if there were more benefits of grinding metalworking like blacksmithing or car upgrades, people would probably use the skill more. I know they will add blacksmithing in next builds so it's just a matter of when really.

Yes, because you can only dismantle fridges, sinks, wrecks, ovens and washing machines once but there is still plenty of metal in this world.

I always get organized xd really nice trait and yes the more you play the game the less you carry on you because you only get the essentials.

Same! Autotsar adds a different and a super fun progression to your cars. Automechanics is a super QoL mod as well.
I always love to go to schools and disassemble the lockers, it helps a lot!
