    As someone who grew up with a father that had anger issues, it makes me really happy that Rob is aware of his temper but also makes the effort to check in with his kids about the situation. I wonder how many memories wouldn’t have been so scarring had my dad processed it with me afterward.

    i think the discussion on french people's rudeness is interesting since even we tend to see eachother as mean depending on where we are from in the country (north vs south, parisian vs provencial etc...) , i'd gladly talk about it on the podcast as a french creep

    • @amityislandchum
      @amityislandchum 2 ปีที่แล้ว +29

      As an American creep, my experience in France was that Paris absolutely lived up to the stereotypes. I spoke decent conversational French, and still (most of) the Parisians were incredibly rude, rolled their eyes even at the most basic of questions, and refused to speak French to me. On the other hand, the people in the south of France were extremely nice and personable. I went to a lot of small towns where nobody spoke English, and they were more than patient with my limited French capabilities. The south was also more gorgeous than I imagined!
      But I have to add that I dealt with a level of sexual harassment all over the country unlike anything I've experienced in any other country I've been to. I was 14 years old the first time I went to France, and the things that grown men would say to me in public were absolutely sickening.

    • @kppsan
      @kppsan 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@amityislandchum Sadly i feel like some french people feel offended by americans (even when they approach french people with the best of intentions as you did) because they have this weird stereotype of them feeling entitled or something.... Also it seems as Paris has maybe the same problem i've heard about New York? Since a lot of people come visit all year long, citizens that live there get tired of tourists and want to just get on with their lives without getting bothered. I'm from the south of France and i do feel like in areas of France outside of Paris we are nicer and willing to communicate with strangers. That might be because we are not jammed in a very heavy parisian routine? I'm happy to hear you enjoyed the rest of France because it's a beautiful country with amazing landscapes and great experiences to live (apart from the sexual harassment obviously, growing up getting catcalled was not fun at all for me and my friends either and i know exactly how it must have felt, french men can be really gross bastards)

    • @meng-hsuanlee8543
      @meng-hsuanlee8543 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Maybe someone can corroborate this: I heard a theory that French people have this distain and cynicism toward others esp other countries is because they’ve always been number 2, historically. Rich and powerful and cultured yes, but always behind someone be it Spain, Britain, America, Germany, etc. and that creates a lot of bitterness.
      Also personally when I was in Paris, I went to this old-timy lindy-hop dance thing and a Parisian woman was visibly unhappy that she was paired with me. (I’m Asian.)

    As an expat in France, I can confirm that a lot of French people (not all) can be a bit extreme about their language they just can't stand people not mastering it and pronouncing things incorrectly and they would even judge you for that. As for the arrogance and rudeness stereotype, having lived in a major city, Paris and a small one near the Atlantic coast, it's 100% true for the former and completely the opposite for the latter. I was even creeped out by how nice people were there at first.

    Rob's talking about Parisians, I think. In my experience, non-Parisian French people are typically pretty nice. But Parisians are always "too busy" to have any compassion. I once was at a Parisian cafe with my partially deaf friend who had worked really hard to learn French. And as soon as he heard her Scottish accent and beginner-level French, he replied in English. We ordered drinks, he walked away, then I "went to the bathroom" but secretly found the server and paid him 20 euro to finish service in French. I know money talks, yada yada, but all I'm saying is that Parisians seem to always act "too busy" to be nice. Everywhere else I went in that country was inviting and people showed a genuine interest in me. But Paris is pretty heartless.
    Update: They are correct about the sacred break time. I went to the bank once and none of the employees would look at me. I said in French, "Hello... excuse me... is the bank open today?" like trying to be nice and eventually the bank manager walked out of his office and was like, "Hey, sorry, they're on their lunch break, how can I help you?" LMAO this was in the northeast.

    I feel like these podcast are really going to bring some good energy into the next season. Sitting down weekly and chatting whether about an episode or just life shows so much dynamic flow that it'll translate down the line.

    I think the French stereotype is specifically about Parisians. Everyone in the smaller places are lovely! Went into a restaurant in Paris and the second my dad opened his mouth and spoke with an English accent the guys face dropped and he shoved us in the back of the restaurant. The rest of my family are kiwis and the gal that was our waitress was brilliant asking us about our accents and joking and we made a point of being extra polite and grateful because she was awesome.

    That story in the French airport feels so on-point to me. I'm not American or British, but I've had similar experiences, not to the same level as Rob - the cream of justice peaked there! But I've had a woman in a cafe refuse to speak English to me, but then speak English to my male friend. And I've also seen one of those people who check passports and tickets barely helping out a woman who was clearly in distress and was speaking English to him - it seemed like she was going to miss her flight and was looking for her gate - and he did the exact same "over there" movement that that woman did to Rob. I really don't get this behaviour.

      I learned that if you say "Hello, I'm sorry, but I don't speak French, do you speak English?" in French, they'll be much more obliging. Easily the most valuable sentence you can learn.

    There’s a French woman who works at my local Co-Op and you basically just described her exactly in that story. What’s strange is, after like 3 years of her being on and off, she randomly apologised to me for being grumpy sometimes and I was honestly so happy she mentioned something because I kept thinking what have I done to deserve this attitude and she says she just gets like that sometimes but it’s not me, it’s just all the BS she has to deal with at the shop all the time like thieves and attacks. I guess French people really are just unhappy most the time. Dunno why, but yeah I agree it must be a cultural thing to just be a bit of an a*se at times 😂
