Hi Michael- Very nice shave! The review on the LPL Traditionnel was really great; thank you. I feel as though I have an excellent idea of what the scent profile is like for this soap. Absolutely very helpful. Please take good care and enjoy the week ahead. All the best!
I did an experiment this week, just to make sure the LPL got its full due. I scraped out some into the loading bowl, and the scent is certainly stronger from the container than it was previously, but still not STRONG (which is fine with me). Lovely scent, feels "classic and classy"!
Heel mooi, maar niet voor mij -- jammer! I will try it in future with a different blade, but I know now what to watch for and how to work around the rough edges with the razor. There is more LPL in my future...
Thank you, Michael. Understood. Yes, over-thinking may seem to hamper the mood or state-of-mind when preparing to shave. For me, with my year and a quarter of experience with wet-shaving, the combination of discovering sensible ways and following tips/pointers from the reviewers is an enjoyable and thoughtful apprenticeship. It's interesting to see how, sometimes, I later hear a reviewer/demonstrator mention a helpful tip/pointer that had somehow already occurred to me. I tell friends and others that the process (and the "meditation" involved) are a definitely beneficial feature, in addition to the extra clean, "manicured" (?) way your face feels after a careful (and however much more luxurious) shave you've given yourself. Thanks for the feedback, Michael. It's good to get from those, like you, who have advanced in knowledge and expertise. Cordially, Martin
Still loving your videos Michael. Getting excellent shaves, pretty much got into wet shaving because of your videos. And now I'm the only clean shaven guy out of all my bearded friends. :) greetings from Ireland!
One of our best vacations was a horse-drawn caravan through Ireland - some of the nicest, most hospitable people on the road helping us as we wended our way through the country side! You need to find better friends :-) Thank you for watching, and thank you for the very kind words - I always love hearing from people who have made the move to wetshaving - here is to good shaves in future!!
A little behind on my videos, but thanks for the review. Not a soap I have gotten too yet, but will now consider it. Sorry the razor doesn’t do it for you. It’s awesome to have such a classic piece!
Not every razor is meant to be a winner, and this will still get airtime every now and then -- it can't just stay locked up in the loot crate forever! Nice soap, especially if you like these kinds of scents - very well done!
Thanks, Ken, appreciate that - and keep going on the vintage aftershaves! It was 72 degrees today when I left work, and we grilled a steak for dinner - it really does not feel like winter at all here. How about you, surviving the frigid wintery blasts (grin)??
Good video Michael. The New Long Comb is one of my favorite razors but I have found that the razor works best for me with a blade like a Voskhod or Astra SP.
I am planning to use a different blade for the next time it comes up in the rotation; I do love how it looks, and of course I will use it again, I just won't be counting the days until the big event :-)
Hello Michael, I enjoyed your video as always. I have not used this soap in a while, but from memory the face feel and post were ok not great. I will give it another week run soon.
I did find it a bit drying, certainly compared to many of the much "richer", fattier artisan soaps available today. This soap seems very simple in comparison, but it did deliver a very slick lather and smells great. Let us know what you think after you try it again! Thank you for watching, as always!
Hi Michael, I used the soap again a couple of times, and I find it unremarkable, scent obviously an individual thing, but not one I can say I love. It is a lean soap, I prefer creamier lathers, adequately slick, post OK but not great. So many great soaps out there, I think this gets a little lost in the crowd.
Nice video, that razor sure seemed like a step down from the previous 2 videos (impressive historical longevity aside). I've often been intrigued by LPL, I do like the French style. I know you seldom revisit products on video but I'd be good to see you try Martin De Candre again, with a more appropriate sized piece of soap, to see if impressions change.
Hi Michael. Hopefully you'll be able to provide me some info. I've been considering adding a Karve open comb to my collection. My question for you is which Karve plate feels most like the Gillette Long Comb in your opinion? Ymmv is assumed here so no worries.
The long comb is on the aggressive side, so go for D plate or higher. I have not tried them, but if you really like the open comb feel and want an aggressive shave, go for the E plate? I felt like the D open comb was more than enough for me.
Before loading the brush with this soap, would scraping or "digging" a bit of the soap off of its surface in the container, pressing that bit into a lather bowl (e.g. Fine or Captain's Choice Lather bowl) and, then, building the lather inside of the lather bowl be a good way of avoiding the "mess" that you spoke of? If you're exclusively a face-latherer, I guess not. Does the process of exfoliating face whiskers suffer much by building the lather in a bowl and, then, working that lather thoroughly onto your face? Or is this simply too much thought and extra process for avoiding no big deal of a relatively little mess?
Absolutely, if you want to avoid the spillover of the lather, just take some of the soap and press it into something shallow and wide - you will be able to load your brush with very little mess. Some people really hate that frothy lather spilling over, and there is really no way when using the small tin to avoid it -- just something for people to think about. I normally do not bowl lather, it's a lot of activity for little benefit on your face (grin), and yes, I think you DO miss out on some of the benefits of *really working the lather into your beard*. Don't over-think it, just do whichever one works best for you :-)
lord very nice blade, the problems with le pere lucien soaps is that I am still not able to obtain a decent lather , too many air bubbles in the lather, all my other soaps in my very huge den , don't give me any problem, maybe trying several times with this soap results should be better , but i am using each soap only one in 3 months , regards robert
Great shave Michael despite the fact the shave experience wasn’t to your liking. I believe the trouble you were experiencing was due to the blade not the razor. I know from experience that certain blades work better in certain razors. If you use a different blade in the same razor next time, the experience will probably be more pleasurable. Have a great day.
For sure, I would expect different blades to give me different shaves (some better, some worse). The problem for me is that I don't want to try out a different blade every day, so I usually only use two blades during the week. I just pick two that I would like to try and then just use them, even if the shave might be better with a different blade. Next time, not to worry, the New Long Comb is not banished, it's just moved to the tail end of the queue :-)
Understandable. I’d hate the cluttering of used blades if I used a new one every day and subsequently saved them to see how many more shaves I could get from them before discarding them, which is something I’m guilty of. Or you could always do the old “switch” and “ditch”, but what fun would that be? Lol Glad to know the razor won’t be subjected to the “metal grave”.
How is going the tin? Any black stains on the soap? Many of my friends here in Greece have transfered the soap in a plastic bowl which method I don't like, because they noticed black spots on the bottom of the soap.
No stains or other spotting that I can see on the surface of the soap, but it is also sitting out uncovered and perfectly dry. I wouldn't know about stains *in* the tin, as the soap still fills the container, but I will keep an eye on it. If it starts to go wrong, I have a number of empty soap containers I can use.
I do love speaking Italian, I even used to teach introductory Italian here - a beautiful language. That is one reason I love to watch Mauro di Lernia - it gives me a way to enjoy well-spoken Italian!
They sell this soap in a much larger 200 gram container as well which should make it easier to lather. They also sell it as a type of refill so people can reuse the container.
I did a lather test today by scooping out some into the lather bowl and using this week's brush - basically the same results, with the same lather quality. Certainly easier to load the brush, so if this WAS my everyday soap, I would absolutely put the whole thing into the lathering bowl and just leave it there. Refill: the way to go.
Somehow, the way this soap came across to me as a scent reminded me of one soap that both you and I like, namely the Le Savon des Volcans Lait d'anesse. You may recall, this is the longish shave stick (now discontinued, as you told me..might be back in production by now) wrapped in a thick brown paper. Apart from the obvious that both tonight's soap & the Le Savon Volcans are French in origin, I sensed your soap and this shave stick have this small-scale, "cottage" production feel to them. I suppose, as truly artisan made as they can get. A while a go another UTube reviewer sort of pulled up tonight's soap precisely because he thought the scent was rather underwhelming and not punchy enough. It's personal choice, I suppose, but less assertively scented soaps can be more "innocent", shall we say, on the ingredients list. Personally, I can like both "punchily" scented soaps and less noticeably scented ones if the ingredients list of the latter is " pure". Thanks for sharing :)
I like the scent on this soap a lot, it's a very clean and soothing scent. Not overpowering, and with a wonderful mix of these traditional countryside scents, and the ingredient list is pretty short and to the point. Sometimes simple is best. This is in fact very close to the Savon des Volcans, but without the added milk, and I have to say I would give the nod to the Savon des Volcans if you made me pick. I have one more soap in the queue that brings together these two worlds, and I hope to use it in the next few weeks -- looking forward to it. Kind of a French soap series going on, and kind of by fortuitous accident.
As a matter of fact, I have! I started and finished a tub of Proraso Green, but I have to be honest: I don't think it is very good soap. The cream may well be better, but I did not think the "hard" soap was all that good.
Same here, people really seem to like it -- and I understand why! It did not shoot to the top of my list, but the soap market today is kind of viciously competitive and this soap is missing that extra punch we see in so many other artisans soaps. I like it, but I did not love it...
You don't need to, but the artisan recommends leaving the soap out and uncovered... That lets it continue to dry out and cure (harden), which helps extend the life of the soap and may let you use less for each shave.
Hi Michael. I guess it all boils down to why use a razor that you just don`t care for. To many good ones out there to choose from. Soap seemed really good though. Thanks for the video.
Fight through the pain? Nah...best to move on. I will be trying the razor again later with a different set of blades, and perhaps it does better - either way I will enjoy the experiment! The soap is really good, and he does offer a pretty good range of scents - I find myself drawn to the apricot for some reason, so that might be on the list for later in the year. I *think* he also makes a tallow-based soap, and that would be high on the list to try. Thanks for watching!
Watch out for corrosion/rust in that metal tin LPL is inside. They are completely idiots they didn't think about it. However, a very good soap. But small lather-loading area. Something interesting now and food for thoughts. After achieving BBS the same day, all are fine. 2 days later when stubble grows back, ONLY around the mouth and near lips, I suffer dry skin and some flakes, that do not calm down with balm or cream. Any thoughts? You think they are ingrown hairs?
I think the tin is stainless - no marks or any rust of any kind to be seen. I will keep an eye on it, but I am pretty sure it will be fine. That sounds more like you are just overshaving there and irritating the skin (taking off a bit too much) -- ingrown hairs will be red and sometimes painful bumps with, well, a hair in it. One thing you can try for the dry skin is to moisturize more heavily there right after you shave, and use a moisturizer that is on the heavy/thick side. Shea butter is really good, and you could just apply just that around your mouth (where the skin is dry) twice a day. Sometimes I find that you really need to KEEP the skin moisturized, so just applying the cream once a day may not be enough. Good luck!
Yes the last thing you mention is very true. If you know Bepanthol cream, this one I use the next day of my shave. The same day, a simple balm is enough for me and without any grain on my skin, nothing happens. It is crazy though, that the next two days my skin around the mouth gets dryness and flakes appear and when I try to eat I get pain when opening my mouth! This happens when stubble is growing back and for two days. When hair is grown enough all seem to be ok, until the next shave! So, I am obliged to shave only once a week! Do you believe it??!
Send me a private message here on TH-cam, and I will get right back to you! Or you can message me via Instagram, look for m.freedberg and PM me there...if that does not work, post a comment here.
I like the look of the new brass handle on this NEW long comb head; but this head is relatively assertive and unforgiving. The added weight of this handle is not conducive to the required light touch. IME, riding the cap a bit helps with this razor head, and it benefits from a blade that is smooth and forgiving. I actually like the Wizamet Super Iridium in the NEW. Nacets and Astra SP's work well in them too. But, I do prefer the short comb to the long comb. I tend to like either on a ball end rather than a common bar handle. The ball end puts the balance point right where I want it. There can be a great deal of variation in the behavior of these razors from one example to another, in part because they are antiques; and in part because Gillette mixed and matched parts during this period of their history as they were merging Probak technology into their manufacture. These razors do not support buffing, IME. That is what the Tech razors excel at. I suspect that this shave soap would benefit from the use of a pre-shave in order to mitigate razor burn and to add slickness. One of the scents that they make contains tallow. I suspect that this would make a world of difference in slickness and in the post shave experience.
I believe the problem is the blade, use the same combination changing just the blade, I do not like this blade, it has little sharpening. Thanks for the video
I will certainly try other blades in the razor next time I use it, maybe a Voskhod or a Personna Red or maybe go crazy and use a Kai or Feather -- we'll all find out together!
One of the videos that continue to make Sundays more fun before the weekdays come
We all need ways to dispel the Sunday blues, and I am glad to do my bit :-)

Michael Freedberg it was 38 degrees when I left for work. That’s the coldest in a while out here👍💈
Looks like it will hit 80 here tomorrow, that is nuts for February!
Good video Michael. The New Long Comb is one of my favorite razors but I have found that the razor works best for me with a blade like a Voskhod or Astra SP.

As usual great and informative video.
Thanks very much, I think you will find this next one of interest if you liked this one!
That handle looks great with that head. 👍💈
I know, just a lucky pairing -- I remembered I had the handle in a box, and I am glad I did!

no problem with the mess, you can put the soap standing around the case , around yr face
Hi mate just wondering how this soap compares with the best you have ever used
It's not up there for me, I find it a tad drying and not as slick as the top tier soaps. It's good, but not great -- for me.
@@mfreedberg ok I see makes sense I'm looking for a excellent vegan soap but I guess it's hard to find

You don't need to, but the artisan recommends leaving the soap out and uncovered... That lets it continue to dry out and cure (harden), which helps extend the life of the soap and may let you use less for each shave.

The soap is really good, and he does offer a pretty good range of scents - I find myself drawn to the apricot for some reason, so that might be on the list for later in the year. I *think* he also makes a tallow-based soap, and that would be high on the list to try.
Thanks for watching!
yes i have the same problem as you with the lather , lather is not very dense neither strong, scent very nice, i should say lather is a deception
Watch out for corrosion/rust in that metal tin LPL is inside. They are completely idiots they didn't think about it. However, a very good soap. But small lather-loading area.
