This is so elegant, I put on my finest, to-the-elbow dinner gloves and went through. Really. I am Lady Grantham now (even Carson can dream, no?)! This was exactly what I was looking for in the long-erased memory banks! As always, thanks again Mr. Sauce!
Heya Mike! I've been recording my own material for 50 years, and using Cakewalk for 15 years, and there's always something new to learn from you. I really appreciate all you do here on TH-cam. Thanks a million!
Just last night I was recording and needed to do a few punch in and thought, "this topic has not been covered much lately, I should do one". Damn, you beat me to it.
Don't forget to turn the punch off when you're finished - A "friend" *cough* of mine may have forgot to do that and couldn't figure out why I couldn't record any new tracks - thanks Mi Mo for figuring that one out for me 🙈🙈
Excellent point. I'm sure I would have struggled with future recordings not knowing to unarm the punch-in. It makes sense, but I have no sense. :) Love these tutorials and the community help as well.
Hi Mike - Cakewalk user here; I just used the "punch in" technique for the first time on a new song and it helped tremendously. It saved so much time and solved some issues quickly. You do an excellent job of explaining things; keep up the great work!😊
Thanks I have played while someone else did the comping and punching in/out, but didn’t really understand what they did until now. Appreciate that you share your expertise.
1:26 Comping, good as long as you've recorded the correct lyric. 2:28 Downside to comping: Can't hear previous takes while recording a new take. Another method is punching in and out. 3:01 Intro 3:53 Module for punching. Right click on blank area in top right > Modules > Punch. Select Overwrite recording method. 4:50 Select area you want to use punch on. Select 'Set Punch Points to Selection'. 6:07 And you can change the selection on the ruler, Auto-Punch Toggle turned on automatically. 6:56 Rerecording the vocal. 7:52 Set up a loop so you can to several takes. Select area, select 'Set Loop Points to Selection'. 8:29 You can combine this with comping. Select Comping as recording method, now it'll keep each take. Delete the section you're rerecording. 10:06 Click Lanes icon and you can see the other takes. 10:41 It's important to fully understand comping, see Mike's tutorial on it.
Great video and advice as always, Mike. Comping isn't something I ever use personally but you keep expanding my knowledge of Cakewalk with every video and it can only make my music better (and quicker) by having a better understanding of the DAW and the tools at hand. Thank you, Mike, for all your brilliant vids.
Mike striked again! I already knew about punch recording, but the comping section you added here is great, it helped me to a better understanding of comping, and the way I can use both techniques. Thank you so much 🙏
That is very useful Mike, I still remember a friend who had a four track Teac tape recorder explaining the benefits of punch in and out. One might need to practice the procedure first and get acquainted with the ropes to avoid accidentally erasing precious stuff! I am not familiar enough with Cakewalk by Bandlab to know if there is an automatic backup function or version history, did you already cover that in another vlog? Thanks for sharing.
Thank you, in face the audio is still there, its more like its cropped and hidden. However, I would do regular backups with version numbers. I normally save my projects with file names like MySong01, MySong02. MySong03, MySong04 etc. After significant changes, I increment the number. This is useful, as you can copy/paste parts between files - so its rare for things to be 'lost'.
Hello! Thanks for this video. I didn't know how can I do this. Now, it will be easier. By on other hand, I have a question: Do you know how can to tuner the voices without melodyne? I mean, to tuner a voice using only free vst or the pitch cakewalk tools. Excuse me, if my English is not good.
sorry to jump in on a different subject, but about to buy a midi controller for my cakewalk, but all the manufacturers seem to ignore cakewalk. is their one keyboard with pads that is integrated with cakewalk? please don't suggest fiddling with Mackie.
I am getting a pop at my punch out point. Any idea on what is causing this?---it is a quieter guitar part so I don't want any popping. Thanks for any information.

Mike, you are such a great teacher! Clear, concise, and oh so easy to understand some concepts that I always thought were 'difficult'.
Just last night I was recording and needed to do a few punch in and thought, "this topic has not been covered much lately, I should do one". Damn, you beat me to it.
Yes Mike, just what I needed. Don't use comping or Punch in/out enough. usually goes a bit wayward. Thanks
Strewth Mike! Your voice has changed a lot since the Vocal Comping video! Much calmer and mellower now.
There you go again, giving us terrifically useful information! Will you ever stop??!! 😋
Thanks, Mike! This is going to help so much with my guitar solos (which are often dodgy and require multiple takes). Your videos are absolute gems!
Wow, that is handy and not as hard/scary as I thought it would be.

Finally! I was getting so confused about the 2 identical icons. Thanks very much!
Glad it helped! Yes, they could do with changing one a little :)
This is golden!!! Could’ve saved a lot of time had I known this.

This is what I've been looking for.. thank you Master!!
Glad it was helpful!

Thank you! I learned how to do a punch-in recording!
Great explanation Mike!
Thank you. Great tutorial.
Brilliant, thanks Mike, perfect for dropping in solos as well.

Good video. Effective style . Check typo in floating graphics at 3:54, punch is spelled "puch".
very good thank you
Thanks. Cool.
