  • In 1982-1983, the Florida Community College Activities Association in cooperation with the State Department of Education sponsored a series of statewide academic competitions for students in 2-year public community colleges. In Spring 1983, Valencia College and WMFE in Orlando hosted the second annual Florida community college brain bowl state finals featuring Florida Junior College at Jacksonville and St. Petersburg Junior College. Florida Junior College (represented by David Silva, Frank Perry, Walter Cavender, A.J. "Jim" Freels, Daniel Ryan) eventually triumph over their opponents (Terrence ?, Bryan Paul Hopper, Robin Moseley, David Carson) for their second consecutive championship. As the winning team, they received offers of scholarships from five state universities as well as $1000 apiece. The College received a plaque honoring the win.
An informational break after the first half of the competition features Ralph D. Turlington, Commissioner of the Florida Department of Education, reviewing the history of the community college system in Florida, which was celebrating its 25th year. Following that is a brief feature on Florida Junior College at Jacksonville and St. Petersburg College and introductions to the players on both teams.
The video closes with a few words from Governor Bob Graham about Florida's commitment to national excellence in education and the awarding of prizes to the winning team by Commissioner Turlington. This final section includes a brief view of the crowd, where FJC Director of Student Activities Milt Russos is visible.
This event was hosted by Bob Zienta.
