  • “Invida sorte avara” from Ariodante (HWV 33)
    George Frideric Handel (1685-1759)
Matthew Brook, Il Re di Scozia (King of Scotland)
Il Complesso Barocco with Alan Curtis, direction
First performed on January 8, 1735 at the Theatre Royal, Covent Garden
As the King is making the final arrangements for his daughter's wedding, the courtier Odoardo brings him bad news - Ariodante has been seen committing suicide by leaping into the sea. The King is heartbroken bearing his immense pain in this Act II lament.
    Invida sorte avara,
    misero! in questo dì,
    nel prence mi rapì
    parte del core.
    Or nella figlia cara
    del cor l’altra metà,
    oh Dei! mi rapirà
    forse il dolore.
    Cruel, envious fate,
    alas, in taking the prince
    you take from me
    a part of my heart.
    And now, oh heavens,
    perhaps grief will claim
    my heart’s other half,
    my dear daughter.
