      With concealed carry, there’s the 21 foot “rule” for dealing with knife attacks. Foils, sabres, and épées are longer than knives, so you’d need even more distance. Standard fencing strips are 46 feet long, but at the starting points, you’re only about an advance lunge from each other.

    I think this video shows why karate can be great for self defense. Seeing how leg kicks can keep the distance away from your opponent and controlling the range. Great stuff!
    Also I love how both of you went out of your comfort zone and were able to learn about each others MA and while probably being unintended learning more about your own. And the best part you filmed it so that we can learn from it as well. Thanks Seth!

    I feel like Muay Thai kicks are the best counter to a boxer because they're designed with boxing style hand strikes in mind, especially the leg kicks to the lead leg. Any reason you didn't teep much? and did you teach him some kick defense?

    • @killaben85
      @killaben85 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      He didn't teep that much in my opinion because the lead side kick was achieving the same thing and also Seth fights more bladed as most Karate Fighters do. It takes a slightly longer time to teep then side kick in that stance. Also I don't think Seth taught him how to defend kicks. I just think since they were doing light sparring and the boxing coach has a smart fight IQ he was slowly able to adapt to the kicks. Things would probably be a bit different if they were going all out but this was all in good fun and a learning experience so it wasn't necessary to go all out. Also Seth fought in a way that gave him an opportunity to learn how to deal with them which shows how great of a Sensei Seth is. Since a good Sensei will be able to teach you things through sparring without telling you what you need to do (to an experienced fighter).

How would his boxing look if it was a pure boxing style that had to account for kicks but couldn't work them back in to offense?

    I was blessed to be on the base boxing team when I was learning Taekwondo. I wasn't a great boxer and I had a lot to learn about Taekwondo, but having both was a big advantage. Add to that the fact I was at peak fitness and 6' 3", that meant I was a difficult guy to deal with. I've thought about it many times and even after studying martial arts and training for thirty more years, I don't think I would want to have to fight that young man. This video definitely highlights a lot of what I have learned and subsequently taught. Good stuff!!!
