Finally, some cool Super “0” stuff. My friend Harris “Mike” Spanier was a big time Super “0” trader in the TCA HQ News. Many times he would send me a big box of 112s to refurbish and/or repair. He also supplied track for the large green “Lionel” bridge layouts. Unfortunately, he has passed on.
FYI ..I have re bent super O curves to 072 , really looks nice , and runs fantastic.. Super O is a little tricky to assemble But if you work with it ..get the bus bar connectors flat.. it's great.
So glad I don't have to watch ridiculously horrible sound, except the actual sound of the mechanical trains. I thought I was the one on the planet running strictly pre and post war trains. Great layout.
Thanks for the note. Always unsure of how much wheel or engine noise someone wants to hear and really tray and balance that during editing. I am strictly a postwar guy, but I do really enjoy watching some of the Prewar equipment!. Did you check out the Elevated Highway at the 19:10 mark. Really adds to the Layout. Brian
You are a kid at heart. I love your layout and especially can’t get over how creative and well produced your “shop window” section is with all of your oranges boxes in back. Our layout, my daughters and I have just gotten this newest version play worthy is also built for fun because we feel if you aren’t having fun you mustn’t be playing trains. We live in Alabama where the Lionel community is much slimmer than where it was before our move so if you know anyone with in the area I would love to share with them. Thanks. Brian Doll.
Thanks, spent a lot of time mapping out how to use the limited space that I have. I also really love how the shop window came out!. I'm originally from Louisiana, so I get the lack of toy trains guys locally, but the internet and the Train Collectors Association have helped build a community of friends and fellow collectors. Keep enjoying those trains. Brian.
Still got a lot of work to do, but I really enjoy running trains on the layout. It's simple and has minimal scenery, but that work for me. Thanks, Brian
Brian, great video and a Gorgeous train/layout. I love the super o track as that is what Bob and I laid on my layout. I very much enjoy your efforts on the channel. Wishing you and family a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
I am a man in hi s50s who has an admiration for all train modelers. I don't; have the patience or artistic ability to reach the heights of those modelers which make life-like, highly detailed models. I appreciate them greatly. Happy to subscribe. I was happy to find this channel as it shares a love for trains and the layout is more doable for a regular person who just enjoys trains. Please don't take my words as any insult to your work here. The detail is far above what I can hope to achieve but this layout looks more like it is meant to run for fun and not just to set a certain time or place. Good old fun is what I prefer. Thank you for your channel. I found it inspiring. Merry Christmas.
No, that was my plan, it was to highlight the accessories and run trains. Simple without a ton of crazy scenery. Sometimes the trains get lost in all that. Don't undersell yourself, just build it and enjoy it. Brian
Hi Brian, thanks for sharing views of your layout. It’s looking fantastic & an inspiration! I Love the Postwar look. Keep up the Good work on your layout and the wonderful videos you post Thank You!
Thanks, really fun running a few trains around for you. The Elevated highway ads so much to that part of the layout. Love displaying the collection and the window worked great. Thanks, Brian
Fantastic layout! I have impatiently been waiting for this video, cause I always see the layout in the background, and wanted to see more. Can't wait to see the finished product! BTW, your track work is impeccable. Perfectly level, straight, with little to no gaps to be found, it's therapeutic to watch your trains run on it.
Thank you, still have a lot of work to do an don't have as much time as I used to. (Channel takes up a ton of time!). A lot of it was done during Covid, so had time them to really focus on the track. Did you check out the Elevated Highway at the 19:10 mark. Really adds interest to that part of the layout. Appreciate the comment. Brian
My pleasure, love sharing with you guys. Enjoy running it, so fun for me too. Did you check out the elevated Highway at the 19:10 time mark. Really adds interest to that part of the layout. Brian
THIS is a phenomenal layout, combining the best aspects of 2 of "old Lionel's" stellar Display Layouts, Super O track and great little dioramas: the coal section, the lumber section, the space section, and the train store mock-up !! And HOW can you NOT really get off on the elevated highway ! Lionel had SO many great concepts in their 1950s Display Layouts that none of us have ever seen, other than mere pictures or sketches !! I just LOVE it. GENIUS idea for pull-out rolling shelf units, disguised as ordinary nondescript under-layout storage! Also a VERY nice assortment of locos and rolling stock. This is the direction the O-gauge train world SHOULD have gone after 1957, instead of chasing HO (ho ho ho) trains, race car sets and science labs... what SHOULD have happened if the toy market hadn't changed so much, with Lionel perched to do a death-spiral, after Josh retired. (Oh, the "What Ifs" !!) You hit a grand-slam with this layout, Brian. And thanks for a lot of nice videos that preceded this one.
Really appreciate the comment. I still have a lot of work to do on the layout. Having modeled the layout after postwar Dealer displays really came out well. The Elevated highway is such a fun aspect of the layout. Yes, Lionel in the 60's was in turmoil, mostly because of inconstant leadership with no vision and the rapidly changing toy market. They did try some pretty cool stuff, but too little too late. Still love them!. Plan on an episode just on the highway contraction soon. Thanks, Brian
@@BriansTrainRoom The Super O track must have been a pain to work with, and it's a bit pricey --- but SO MUCH better looking than anything since, IMHO. If you study the company's history, the idea for a more realistic looking 3-rail track started years earlier, but just never was approved. By '57-'58, the established base of tubular was so ubiquitous that it was difficult getting a new "standard" started. Your layout is right up there with the 1957 Catalog layout (back cover) which is a benchmark in itself !
@@burlingtonbill1The Super O is absolutely beautiful. I am putting it on my layout. There is a Super O group where there is a wealth of information. You can learn to bend it to any radius you need.
Thanks for the comment, really appreciate that. Even though I have some work to do, it did turn out great. Did you check out the Elevated Highway at the 19:10 mark, it really adds interest to that part of the layout. Brian
@@BriansTrainRoom The elevated highway is perfect! I can only imagine running that with the lights turned off just using the street lamps. Could you do a short for me, Brian?
Brian, I’ve enjoyed watching you postwar trains run on your very unique postwar layout, thanks for the history of Lionel Train, and your great videos! Merry Christmas! 👍👍❄️☃️🚂🚂
Thanks, really fun getting to show you guys my layout. Have a lot of work to do, but it really turned out great. Did you check out the Elevated Highway at 19:10 time mark, really adds interest to that part of the layout. Appreciate the comment. Brian
Another comment - Great seeing the postwar trains out of their boxes and running on the layout. Would love to see more details on the moving autos - they look great.
While I do have some NOS trains till in their boxes, I do love running what I have, thanks. Plan on doing a mini-episode on the construction of the Elevated Highway, by request. Thanks, Brian
Great running session Brian. Really enjoyed seeing your Super O layout in action. This is the best part of the hobby to me. I am an operator first, then a collector.
I do love running trains, even though I feel like fall more on the collector side when comes to the trains I go after and show on the channel. But that is where is all started, with my hands on that ZW transformer hi balling a 2503W super O set from 1958! (That I got from my uncle). Thanks Brian
I am fortunate to have a little space in our basement, some guys a have huge spaces. So, even if you get a small space in the future, it will still have lots of potential!. Thanks Brian
Great layout! Absolute pleasure to watch the trains in action. Love how you took Dealer Displays as a starting point to create a custom home layout. The false dealer window is a perfect addition with stacks of Lionel boxes on the shelves.
Thank you, Love getting it up and running. Love sharing my passion for the trains and appreciate the comment and support. Lots more to come in 2025! Brian
Thanks, my contractor thought I was nuts when I added the window/room without a door! And the flat buildings of the elevated highway was a throwback to the D63 as well. Brian
Great video. Nice to see you run the layout. The dealer display influence is really nice. Interesting to see you own take on those layouts. The dealer display layouts have some great ideas to incorporate into a themed set up. Thanks for sharing Brian.
This is the third Layout that I have built, always use Super O track and always wanted one of the dealer displays, so this fits the bill. Thanks,. Brian
That is really neat Brian. Perfect video for this time of year. The area behind the window is a very nice touch. I like the wood work and stain around the layout. I think wood working in general was popular in the 1950s. I can’t explain how nice this video/layout is. Ken
Thanks, my contractor thought I was nuts when I asked for a window there, but once he saw what I was doing, it just worked. Also gives me a place to display the trains and boxes. Thanks Brian
Brian ❤ your layout.especially how you made part of it as an old hobby shop setting with the plexiglass window. That is so cool. I just really like finding an old hobby shop that’s been around for a long time . Unfortunately those days are gone but having a little model of one is awesome. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.🚂🚂🎄
Yeah, the Hobby shop look turned out well. My contractor thought I was nuts when I asked for a window in the middle of the room with no doors. Cool to see the trains run behind the glass! Thanks, Brian
This is my third time watching it. I believe this is my favorite video I have ever seen on TH-cam. The Super O is beautiful. It looks brand new. Mike Spanier would be proud. I only have Post War and it sounds beautiful. No animated sound. The Space Age area is beautiful. I hope to get an area like this on my layout. Please make an additional video on how you made your roadway. I cannot thank you enough for making these fantastic videos. I look forward to seeing more of your work.
Cannot thank you enough for the support. I really enjoy making these videos and sharing my passion for Postwar Lionel trains. The Mike Spanier compliment is an honor . Thank you. I plan on a mini-episode about the Elevated Highway, it took some trial and error, but it did turn out well. More to come in 2025! Brian
Thank you. Love the elevated highway, it just adds so much to that part of the layout. Took a lot of engineering to figure how to make it work right!. Brian
Thanks, me too, it adds so much to that part of the layout. By request, I will do an episode on the way I built it. I have some photos of it's construction and testing. Lots of trial and error for sure!. Brian
What a wonderful layout! I have a bunch of Super O that I put up around the tree every other year for my tree layouts but I would love to recreate a D-264 display with it someday. Great video, Brian! Merry Christmas to you!
Re-creating a D-264 would be great, love those layouts. Glad you liked the video. Did you check out the Elevated Highway at the 19:10 time mark?. Thanks, Brian
Absolutely fantastic! I love the store window effect, I’ve considered building a similar style store front display. Also love the working highway! Well really love all of it!
Really appreciate the comment. The elevated highway really adds interest to that side of the layout. Fun to get running when I have guests. You definitely have to add a store front display, really ads to the room! Thanks,Brian
It was great getting that tour of the layout again Brian, and I really loved the GoPro tour! I'll tell you what, I boosted the TH-cam playback speed to 1.25 and WOW, what a ride! 🤩 Thanks for posting, and a very Merry Christmas to you and yours!
Great video Brian, love your layout. I think super 0 track was a fantastic track system. I have number of straights but no curves. Only if super 0 came in 0-72. It’s a dream. Currently using fastrack but would switch over in a minute if 0-72 curves were available. Keep em coming.
Yes, Super O does have its downsides. (The switches are finicky ). There is a guy who will stretch out super O track and make large radius curves. Newer tried it, but that would have been super helpful. Thanks Brian.
Fantastic layout!! You have quite the collection of pre war tarins. The trains I grew up with. Totally enjoyed watching those trains, you have a fun train room. Makes me wonder if I should get rid of all my newer trains and just keep my post war, Hmmmmm
So cool, Brian! You have one fantastic layout, for sure. I really liked the GoPro view and all of the classic, 1950's trains and accessories. The highway is a real neat feature of the layout. It would be interesting to see how you keep the tension on the drive. Similar to a chair-lift, I would suppose. I thought about doing a recreation of the post-war showroom layout, but my neighbor, who I bought the house from, subdivided the basement. It has the length, but not the width. Either way, your layout is just a fabulous trip back in time. An excellent video, as always. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
Thanks and Merry Christmas as well. The highway is so fun. It took a ton of engineering to get it to work right. Plan on a supplemental episode on the just the highway. I have pictures of how it got constructed. Enjoy. Brian.
Brian, I really like your postwar layout and your postwar collection..please do a future video on how that elevated highway works. Merry Christmas my friend!
Great idea. Will have to work that into an episode. Will have to brush up on my flatcar loads!. Tough to find original and in new condition these days!. Brian
I just posted a long update in my community section of my TH-cam Page. Basically stating my focus from now on will be conventional. I have a few Lion Chief Engines I might consider selling actually. Two of them a BNSF Dash 8 and a CSX Dash 8. I love your content and channel👍👍
Enjoy your content. Takes me back to the early60's. Still have my first set. Would it be all right to ask you a question about. Trying to identify its outfit number. Don't remember having the box. Think they bought the display unit.
Great video, sir, would you be willing to show how the overhead highway system conveyor belt works in greater detail please. I would love to duplicate it on my layout. Blessings!
Got a number of requests for that, so I plan on an upcoming mini-episode on the how It got built and how I made it work. That should help get you started. Appreciate the comment!. Brian
I love your display style Lionel layout. I am curious about how you got the automobiles to run round the roadway. Any information would be appreciated. I would like to build an operating highway for my layout. Many thanks and have a Merry Christmas to you and yours.
Thanks. Took some engineering to make it happen. So, first under the roadbed is a continuous loop of round conveyer belt on pulleys. Then I put a nail into the belt that hooks onto the car and pulls it along. Every once in a while car jumps the track, but seems to work well. The cars are mostly Midgetoy, lightweight, but not too light. Plan setting up a Website to compliment the channel in 2025, will post photos then. Hope that gives you a start. Brian
Hello Brian. A very enjoyable vid. Some silly questions and obeservations. . Have you ever attempted to have your little midg truck on the elivated highway pull one of your piggyback tailers while it was going around the display? I also wondered do you have a remote top side switch for the drill or do you have to crawl under and pull the drill trigger? The go pro trip is a handy way to locate lost logs and other loads. I do like your posts as the post war stuff is what I run. I have attmepted to limit myself to running stock that can navagate 0-27 trunouts. Keep em comming.
Thanks and great suggestions. The Midgetoy truck can't pull a trailer because of the way they get turned around. The trailer would go flying!! The drill is direct wired to a DC transformer that I can turn on and control the voltage to. I do have to turn it on from under the layout, mostly since I don't like having the transformer plugged in all the time. Yes, Go pro's are a cool view and help find stuff!. Brian
Hello Brian! Thank you for sharing your layout. I am curious about the slide out storage cabinets. Are those on casters? Were they custom built or regular shelves ?
So, super simple. They are the Saunder Cabinet from like Lowes or Home Depot with sliders on the base. Very simple. Been using then for years, Then built the table around them so they fit in perfectly. Thanks. Brian
Those are the O27 passenger cars. 2400, 2401 and 2402, 2403. From 1948. You can find them on E-bay, trains shows or check Trainz.com. Really nice looking cars!. B
Questions. Why are you using tinplate bungalows and mansions? Aren’t these prewar buildings? I love your printed backdrops. Can you give any information on them?
So, while I am a postwar guy, have respect for prewar trains for sure! These were just a great fit for the layout and once I get them lit, they will look even better. More of a throwback! Not really sure who made the backgrounds, found them at a trains show. They are vintage, but unmarked. Brian
A personal observation. You must not have a cat like we do. I cannot keep our cat off of our table and I have limited what I can put on my table because of Quinn our cat. Thanks.
Yup, no cat, just Dogs, and they don't care about much on the table. If we had a cat, it would have to be a cat free zone for sure! I have heard cats like getting into tunnels! B

@@BriansTrainRoom Yes, I'd VERY MUCH like to see that!
Brian, I really like the layout. The highway is spectacular. Keep up the good work. Merry Christmas from another postwar operator.
Merry Christmas to you too. Keep playing trains!. Brian
Thanks for posting, and a very Merry Christmas to you and yours!
My pleasure, lots of ways to watch. Remember to check out the 19:10 time for the elevated highway. Love that part of the layout. Brian
Yes............... The old stuff will always work and have value. Brian
Enjoy. Brian.
Really excellent video. I grew up with super o track and still use it. I'd like to hear the horn on the New Haven & Union Pacific Alcos.
Yeah, needed to show a few more of the accessories and blow the horn and whistles!. Brian
Brian, I really like your postwar layout and your postwar collection..please do a future video on how that elevated highway works. Merry Christmas my friend!
You know, great idea. That has been a question asked, will do. Give me a few weeks and I will get it done. Brian
Very nice Brian . I hope you do a review of the red flat cars with the grey military vehicles on them in the future . great video ! Thanks !
Great idea. Will have to work that into an episode. Will have to brush up on my flatcar loads!. Tough to find original and in new condition these days!. Brian
@@BriansTrainRoom took me 30 yrs of collecting to notice they came from lionel. I thought they were cheap knock offs
I assume you run entirely conventional!! So Cool!!
For sure. Pure ZW power!. Ain't no crazy electronics in them engines!! Brian
@ I love it!!
My pleasure, having a ton of fun making these videos for everyone. Reach out at brianstrainroom@gmail.com and I will see what I can do to help. Brian
Brian
@ wow thank you. I’ll keep an eye out for that!!
Brian
Could you do an episode on building the moving highway.
Yes, my plan is to do a mini episode on the Building of the highway. I have some pictures and early video of it working. On the way. Brian
I will be watching. Love your channel
Thanks. Brian
Thank you very much for the reply. Good information
Awesome!! What are the green passenger cars with the GG1? I just bought a green GG1 and was wondering what cars to put with it. Thanks!!
Wow oh my gosh I absolutely adore postwar and mpc era lionel trains I love em and I gotta say you have the best postwar lionel collection and finely displayed lionel layout on TH-cam keep the excellent videos coming my friend I absolutely love all your videos I'm trying to build me a collection of lionel mpc and postwar era trains right now also lionel trains are absolutely the best model trains ever made in my opinion check out my channel I've got quite a few lionel videos I think you'll enjoy! Keep the awesome videos coming Brian and I'll be watching for sure your channel is a huge inspiration to me and alot of other lionel collectors and operators brings back alot of great memories also for alot of us thanks for the great vids my friend!!!
My pleasure, I will certainly check out your channel. Love the postwar Lionel trains. I am not as schooled on MPC. I know there is some really rare and oddball MPC stuff out there I know other collectors want to know about. Got so much cool Postwar rarities and oddballs planned for next year. Thanks fro the support. Brain
No problem keep the excellent videos coming my friend!@@BriansTrainRoom
