      It helps to have a completely aged well played guitar built with excellent tone woods. The Martin grail myth had haunted me for 40 years and then I had the luck to try a beat to s...t 1945 D45 (adirondack / brazilian). I was blown away. The entire box resonated completely on the slightest tickle of the strings making the the most amazing sound I have ever heard for an acoustic. A lot of the war time and post war time guitars are the most sought after for this level of response.

    The most balanced sounding Gibson acoustic I've heard Mark play. What a lovely sound and looks great. This one I would feel honored to own.

    Man that Southern Jumbo rings out loud & proud. When talking Gibsons of this era, that banner statement is totally the truth. Great playing Mark.

    I have really enjoyed learning about Gibson's acoustic guitars over the past year on Flat top Fridays. For one reason or another I have never played very many of them and although I always figured they were quality instruments for some reason I always assumed that they were not he equal of Martins. But I have come to realize that this is not the case at all. They seem to have quite a different quality of sound than Martins. Not better or worse just different. One of my favorite things about GOTD is how much I learn about vintage guitars. I can only imagine how busy you guys are but it would be really fun to see a side by side comparison of various Gibson acoustics and the equivalent Martin models. Oh well just another job for when you have nothing else to do. Anyway thanks again I look forward to this every day.

    • @Two_Seat_Pete_FatA55
      @Two_Seat_Pete_FatA55 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Some of the old Gibson's like this have a great tone but i've found many old Gibson acoustics sound really dead. I've found old Martin's seem to age a bit better than Gibson but really you will find good and bad from both when it comes to vintage guitars.

    • @TheSoulsandRevive
      @TheSoulsandRevive 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It's all subjective and personal preference really. I prefer Gibson and I concur, I love the history behind these vintage guitars! Cheers..

    • @Two_Seat_Pete_FatA55
      @Two_Seat_Pete_FatA55 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree with all that. I just can't enjoy the sound of Taylor's much. I do like Gibson's but i prefer Martin mostly because when i use acoustics, it's used to sit in the mix rather than be a focal point. If i was needing an acoustic for character and to stand out in a mix or drive the song, then i'd probably go with Gibson but as you say, that's just generalising. I'm sure you can make all of them work for most scenarios if you want to.

    • @PeterWasted
      @PeterWasted 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You are absolutely right that Gibson and Martin guitars are different. I don't think one is better that the other. Listen to Mark's playing of Old Man. The guitar sound is NOTHING like Neil's D45(?) - Yet it's still good...

    • @carrickbender
      @carrickbender 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Jim Bonacum I think you are right on the money. I play an older Taylor for my main stage instrument, and it hasn't been till recently when I started even considering a gibson as its replacement or another guitar in my arsenal. Truth? it took a trip to norms to look at some of the 50s era gibsons that just kinda knocked my socks off. So yeah, great comment and all true.

And, the Gals will get a plaque, to be placed on the original Gibson building in Kalamazoo, when renovations now in progress are complete. www.amazon.com/Kalamazoo-Gals-Extraordinary-Gibsons-Guitars/dp/0983082782/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1361227589&sr=1-1&keywords=kalamazoo+gals

    Thanks for featuring such a wonderful guitar and for sharing the news about the "Kalamazoo Gals," featured in my book of the same name. BTW, Woody Guthrie bought his Banner SJ in NYC on December 8, 1943 and used that guitar on the Mo Asch sessions, when he recorded "This Land Is Your Land." So, that's the perfect guitar on which to play that song. Thanks, again.

      johnthomasguitar a guy that saw woody pawn it in New York bought it from the store. woody then bought a barquero classic guitar. from a luthier. the guy who biught the sj lives in the San Fran area I think. I emailed him and he ignored me. I forget what I asked him. he probably thought I wanted to buy it but maybe I did. That's my dream guitar, woody' s sj from the asch sessions. him and cisco houston playing down on the mountain is incredible and they both had the same guitars bought off the liberyy ship the same say. tells you something about the guitar, must have been the best for them to pick it at the guitar shop amongst all the others and they sepbr their hard earned money on an expensive guitar.

    Woody's most famous guitar! He bought a 1943 Southern Jumbo new with the money he earned in the Merchant Marines. Cisco Houston bought one along with Woody as well; together they recorded a large amount of songs for Moses Asch (owner of Woody's record label in the 40's) using their banner jumbos.

    That thing rings beautifully. I have a horrible regret. My grandfather paid $125 for a Gibson acoustic in 1932 or '33. He played that guitar fir 40 years before he gave it to me when I was a teenage brat. In 1995, I sold it for $1500. That guitar was probably worth $50,000 today. What a jackass I was.

      Chris Henderson Do your research. I'm pointing out a FACT!
      ""You know, Woody was a Communist," says Woody Guthrie's longtime friend Pete Seeger (Joel Klein, Woody Guthrie, xiv). There you have it. Woody Guthrie, that starry-eyed guy who trekked around the country with a guitar over his shoulder singing folk songs until the cows came home, the archetype of the hobo, the voice of the people during the Great Depression, the guy that put a sticker on his guitar that said "This Machine Kills Fascists," possibly the first punk rocker and definitely the first full-fledged folk music hero, was a Communist. No two ways about it, folks."
