Just found you guys during this CV19 period and it's great viewing. Love how you guys are so transparent, have no sailing experience and documenting everything.. good luck
"Curiosity killed the cat..." the idiom admonishes, and yet it ends with the more uplifting sentiment of "...satisfaction brought it back." We often forget the second half of the idiom. Happy sails, Curiosity! And thank you Wynns for the detailed information. Peace and health to you and yours.
I have not read all the comments so maybe someone already said this, but I have to say....this is, by far, the most informative explanation of the boat buying process I have run across. Not that I've even run across any (haha)...but, I loved it. Someday I want a boat just like yours and this vlog will "hopefully" be remembered.
We created a SERIOUSLY in-depth article that goes into way more detail than our conversation captured here on video. If you're looking to purchase a cruising boat of any kind (motor, sail, mono, cat) we list out just about every step along with the costs and the people we hired to help along the way. I hope you find it helpful in your planning process. Here's the link to our website post: www.gonewiththewynns.com/exhausting-journey-buying-cruising-sailboat
So how can they kick you out of Florida for so long, after your extension? I didn't understand that part, it's not like Florida is a different country, plus isn't being on the ocean not technically in the state?
+foxrace0985 If we stay longer than 6 months they would consider florida the location for our boat and we'd be required to pay FL sales tax...which is a lot of money.
+Gone with the Wynns Thanks for answering, that's what I didn't understand, also. Damn, anything to get that tax money. You have to cats? Import fees, $100 each. Leaving Florida? We need another $100s for those cats... export fees. lol
Your videos are like good wine - the older it is - the better it gets. Thank you for being transparent with the boating buying process. You two are such a lovely and entertaining coupler. Wish you the best with your current refit in New Zealand and god speed with your adventure.
Now that is an outstanding , well thought out tutorial on purchasing a sailboat..You two brought up several things that never even came close to being analyzed by my brain.....thank you!
Oh you guys are great!!! So glad I found your youtube channel a few months ago. Look forward to seeing you many years down the "sea" and all your adventures and progress!!
Congrats! Our family would go on sailing vacations instead of camping when our children were little (5-15) on the east coast. My first experience with a catamaran was enlightening. We were going out one morning for a few days after stocking up, and a sailing instructor and his class were also left a little bit before us. I was steering with my cup of coffee on the seat beside me, family was down below puttering around. As I easily passed them, I looked at the sailing class: they were all holding on for dear life heeling over, no coffee cups to be seen. I never went back to monohulls. I new it was a success when our children started inviting their friends. (even with no cell phone, radio, tv, etc) and they all loved it. Of course, bugger boats required :)
Congratulations!🎉. Thank you for all the the details and really sharing this process. Your spirit of adventure is inspiring! You always do your research and go in with your eyes wide open. You're young, healthy, intelligent, and adventurous, you have it all! Thanks for taking us along!❤️
My wife and have been enjoying watching y'all go through the buying process! It's great to see a couple our age making it happen instead of just dreaming. We are a few years out on our boat budget but we are making it happen. We will be in the south FL area soon for some more sailing classes so maybe we will get to wave as we sail bye. Thank for all the great info!
Thank you again for sharing so much detail and putting it out there for us. It sounds like a great adventure and skill set to learn. I treat elderly and the happiest people are the ones who went for it and lived. The most bitter are the ones who stayed home and did nothing. Enjoy going for it!
Glad you found a boat. There is a huge learning curve. When buying my current Sailboat, I first raised the money. Then started searching for the boat I wanted over a few months. When I found it online, I immediately drove to it, did my own survey in about 6 hours (it was already in the water, I SCUBA dove on it too)), made a fair offer after explaining my findings, it was accepted that day, I then immediately did a wire transfer to the broker and got a bill of sale (same day). Then I drove home and filed the documentation paperwork and made copies of it. Grabbed some buddies, food, and equipment, went back the the boat and sailed it home to my marina (600 miles in about 4 days). Total time about 1 week. No extra expenses. I am a Delivery Captain (never need to hire one). I think I am on the other end of the boat-purchase spectrum from you guys. Have a great time on your new boat, I'm currently sailing Florida and the Bahamas, maybe we'll meet. I'll look out for you.....literally (kidding, just kidding).
Wow, what a process! Congratulations on navigating your way through all the complex details. Thanks for being so open about the cost of everything. Wishing you the Best Of Luck, and a wonderful life aboard your new boat!
I know one of your concerns voiced in a previous video about RV's was the lack of many people your age in the community. Viewing your recent videos cause me to reconsider my purchase of an RV. Instead I might wish to buy a 45-50 ft sailboat, obtain ASA certification, and pursue other more expansive dreams. Different community entirely. So, I am about to join your age concerns, but on the opposite end of the spectrum at the age of 65. I doubt I will encounter many newbies at this age, but I like that. I like it a lot and will like it every year I continue. Thanks for a great video!
Very informative! A year ago I took that 1-week catamaran sailing class with BWSS - you will LOVE it! Some of the best money I ever spent. Enjoy the journey...
I've been watching your vids on rv life for just a few months. I'm about to do a solar install on my big truck and your vids helped a lot. I've always wanted to sail a cat and I think I will charter one sometime in the future. Congratulations on your find. I love the Leopard 43 layout. Keep posting as much as you can. You 2 are full of great information and you do it in a very classy way. Have fun in the sun.
Congrats to you both, I'm so excited for you. I'm boatless at the moment, but have owned four in my time, yes they are expensive, but, and it's a big BUT, I have a life time of fantastic memories and in my opinion you can't put a price on that. I'm very much looking forward to seeing your adventures. Wishing you fairs winds and tides.
Sounds like you really clicked with the right people, and your experience and sharing could help anyone in their quest to buy a boat. Although I have no interest in owning a boat, if I ever hear of someone looking I will point them to your website and TH-cam channel.
I'm thinking seriously of living in an RV; in part because of your videos. I'm going to miss your RV stories. I am going to love to see your sailing adventures though!
Thank you for including us in your life. :) Meaning thanks for being so honest and informative with your fans. Wow - I have learned SO much from you guys and continue to. We're hoping to go full time on the ROAD soon - not sure if we'll ever go full time on the open see but who knows - maybe that's the natural progression of things. Just once again thanks for sharing and educating. :)
Congratulations! I love the new name...it has a special meaning to me as well. I inherited my Granny's dishes and they are named "The Old Curiosity Shop". The dinner plate has a picture of The Old Curiosity Shop depicted by Charles Dickens and all the other pieces have little items you could find in the shop such as a clock, pair of glasses.... Congratulations again and I look forward to your new adventures!
Congratulations on your new purchase.I have enjoyed your videos on being an RV owner and look forward to your new videos on being boat captains.Always informational and entertaining.Thank you for the effort you put into doing these videos.
You guys are amazing!!!! Congrats on your new sailboat!!! So exciting. And thanks also for sharing all the details about the process and finances. Best of luck!
Thanks for all the great videos. My wife and I are wanting to spend 6 months out of the year on a catamaran when we retire. I enjoy watching the process. It's funny that a lot of people comment on here about "how expensive it is to run a boat". While this is true, it pretty much goes without saying though. Nobody buys a sailboat without looking into maintenance and operating costs. Congrats and enjoy the boat!
So happy for you guys! I truly appreciate this video. I am looking to go through this process in a year or two, it is good to know what to expect. Thanks again, SAFE TRAVELS!!
Awesome, Congratulations!!! Look forward to some great videos showing off your new vessel. My wife and I after purchasing a big sailboat took a 3 day course in docking. The idea of aiming for the cheapest boats in the marina when things go wrong gave me stress attacks. Another expense well worth it.
Hey we (Scott and Amy) just attended BWSS (ASA 101,103,105,114) three months ago (mid-February 2016) out of the ft Lauderdale location. Our instructor was a South African named Arno. In many ways we are in a similar sort of journey as you, as we plan to buy just about the same type of boat. You will be on a 38' Island Spirit Cat for the class. The only thing we did not like about the class boat was the line plan, as all lines did not lead to the cockpit (you have to stand at the mast to raise the main, for example) Instruction was excellent, you really get the confidence to handle one of these beauties. I feel like your videos are aimed right at us, we plan to buy in 2-3 years. Sounds like you made a good choice!
I saw one of your videos yesterday and got to tell you i am a fan, i would like to think i can do what u guys are into, "exploring the globe" ,but needless to say we all know the truth :) You both are living a lot of peoples "dream" and let us enjoy the experience virtually. Keep it going guys.
This video is very informative. You guys rock for sharing all of your experiences with us! I'm sure filming and editing videos were an added complication through your boat buying process. So happy its over for you guys...it's BEAUTIFUL. Congrats & sounds very exciting! ! I've been following you since my husband and I went to full time RV life in 2013. We are both in our early 30's. We recently bought a home and still have our 19ft (134sqft) travel trailer we full timed in. Still have an itch to go back on the road!
Congratulations! WOW! Curiosity is a GREAT name for YOUR vessel. You both are great examples of hard work, wise investing, an Optimistic/Positive Attitude, American Exceptionalism, and Capitalism, that ALLOWS ALL OF US the opportunity for "CURIOSITY" because we have Liberty and Freedom! May the education you both learn in and out of the classroom in the next few months guide you well. And God continue to bless and keep you safe and healthy. Huge Congratulations!!!!
I like how Jason knows the numbers! Like Marcus Lemonis. Know your numbers! I love the name also by the way! Very excited to see what's happening next!
I would have thought a name like GONE should have been in consideration, simple and easy to understand over the radio. Plain and simple as soon as you are proficient at sailing that is what you will be ,GONE. A good bit of knowledge was shared by you in this video. I hope the videos that will be coming will just as good as the RV ones have been.. Have fun and stay safe. Try to learn about the common problems that occur while on the open sea and be prepared. They will be more complex than plugging a tire. You bought a beautiful boat it can be a lot of work just to keep it that way.
Fantastic informative video. I just went through this whole process also. Your video really spells out the process to expect for new sailboat purchasers....no candy coating. I look forward to the new sailing adventures. Take it slow and take the time to learn everything about your new sailboat and sailing. Congratulations!
Congratulations on the boat. We are a few years from making the jump to a boat. I appreciate the info and the experiences that you have shared. I look forward to your adventures.
Excited to watch the transition from road to water. Get our there and go for it! Don't listen to all the complainers. If you decide to spend some more time in St. Augustine and check out the local restaurants and bars on your way back north let us know. We'll be happy to show you a good place for craft beers and to pick your brain on the travel lifestyle.
As "Rod" said....we are sailing, we are sailing.. Happy days! Caveat... 'all' boats are a hole in the sea to throw money into, but that won't stop you being happy. Good luck to a lovely couple. 💑
Nikki & Jason, CONGRATS!!!! I'm glad you have purchased the boat & the insurance!!!! Sounds like this was VERY complicated!!! WOW!!! SSSOOO happy that you are on your way to learning how to sail!!! Praying your training goes SUPER!!! :)
Just a delightful video ! Enjoyed the in-depth explanation of the entire buying experience. You are on your way to a new experience, best of luck on your new adventures.
Sad that you are not going to be full time RV. I am planning to be a full timer in an RV in 5 years loved learning from you both. It is exciting to watch your next adventure in a boat your braver than myself. I will be watching and happy for you both!!
I wish you luck and safe travels for your future time on the sea !! Thx so much for your awesome videos and letting us know the big and small facts of your boat buying process.
OMG!! I'm so excited for you guys!! Congratulations!!! That one part at the end is weird. You can't come back to Florida for 6 months? What the heck is that about?
This was great for me, a whole lot of things I was needing to know and now do! I will be saving up to get a boat "someday" but wow so many things I didn't know. THANK YOU!!!
I'm never gonna buy a canoe let along a 43 foot sailboat, but I'm glued to your channel like a fly on a fly strip. Very educational and entertaining (but still useless to me). I'll miss the RV videos. Can't wait to see the shenanigans you get yourself into at sea. Good Luck!!
This is why RVers follow you guys. You give honest opinions and show the real deal. So glad you're now a boater. I would love to live on a boat, but I need to stay near land for my business. But, I get to live through you, lol.
Congratulations guys! I can't wait to see a video with boat tour. Also really looking forward to all the new adventures.... And keep those RV tips coming as long as you can.
I know I have suggested in the past that you charter a boat for a year instead of purchasing but I want you to know that I wish you luck and I do like your vision and passion to do what you want to.. not many in the world with the guts to go for it like you two. I wish you both all the best on your future voyages. Cheers
It would cost a fortune to charter a boat like that for a year. Probably nearly as much as what they paid for it. Especially since most charter places would make them get a captain on board, at least in the beginning.
This will be us in 2 years!!! I can not wait for this excitement!!!!!! Luckily we did the classes with Bluewater Sailing School and my hubby got his captains license so hopefully our insurance won’t be too bad!!
Crash Course on Bridge heights, your DWL height (Air Draft) and DOCKING (I've been sailing for 22 years and I still hit and rub once a while - or learn to lie)!!! Your gonna hit the dock, piers, boats, etc... 43' for a first boat is rather big. Good Luck and make sure you have your boating license and Doc papers on board. SeaTow!!! BoatUS!!! Your going to run aground, or lie about it. Good Luck, I'm subbing in. This should be a fun watch!
Congrats! I hear ya on having to raise the budget to get what you wanted. I had to do that when I bought my house 5 years ago. It stinks on having to do it....but like you said, you didn't want to start out with so many projects that you might not be "sailing" until 2020.
Soooo glad my vicarious life with the Wynns continues....Great job on the Cat purchase and your vid with explanations .... one thing you may want to consider, besides a good weather data subscription, is a site called Vessel Vanguard...they take all your info on Boat/motors etc and give your a calendar for scheduled maintenance for all your goodies required and or any recalls from various manufactures etc...but would take the guess work out of it...all the manuals etc are available on line for any work you do yourself.... parts required etc.... anyway...like $600 for the download and 1st year and then $200 thereafter...just a heads up.......can't wait for more videos.....need my fix....
I'm sorry you had to experience that,,,,,But,,you have experienced THAT,and it's OVER! You will NEVER have to go through it like that again. I'm so pleased you had wonderful people throughout your "ordeal". You probably have,,and certainly will,,hear horror stories of "First Boat" buying. Can't wait to stop by for a glass of wine,,,or six. Much Aloha,be safe, and may you always have fair winds, and following seas. C-Ya!,,,,,Peace!. (oh,if you need a hand jockeying around the RV,and vehicles, drop me a note,,I'm bored anyway. LOL)
More adventures with The Wynns! Glad to see you two "navigating" the pits and snares of this new venture! Can't wait to see the various locations that you'll take us to! : )
This is seriously the most informational video series on buying a boat and getting out cruising I have ever seen. Great job.

+Gone with the Wynns oh okay. Questioned answered.
+Gone with the Wynns yikes, you wouldn't want to pay taxes...where are you going spend the summer? Bahamas?
Congrats!

I love this couple.. Just stumbled on to this and am now ready to renew my dreams of cruising. Have a safe experience on SV Curiosity.
Thank you again for sharing so much detail and putting it out there for us. It sounds like a great adventure and skill set to learn. I treat elderly and the happiest people are the ones who went for it and lived. The most bitter are the ones who stayed home and did nothing. Enjoy going for it!
You guys were lucky to get a knowledgable broker, a friendly owner, and a detail focused surveyor.
Glad you found a boat. There is a huge learning curve. When buying my current Sailboat, I first raised the money. Then started searching for the boat I wanted over a few months. Wishing you the Best Of Luck, and a wonderful life aboard your new boat!

So happy for you two! Thanks for taking us thru the journey and future journeys.
Congrats guys! As a long time boater, I can hardly wait to follow your upcoming adventures.
Very informative! A year ago I took that 1-week catamaran sailing class with BWSS - you will LOVE it! Some of the best money I ever spent. Enjoy the journey...
I'm excited about the adventures we will all have with you! Thank you.
2021 and I've been watching for 5 years!

You guys are amazing!!!! Congrats on your new sailboat!!! So exciting. And thanks also for sharing all the details about the process and finances. Best of luck!
I am so incredibly excited about this adventure you are taking us on. It will be such fun.
Vincent Maturo Ditto. It's great to sail the seas vicariously. Don't have to get sunburned.

+sbarbu The BWSS class I took last year had Arno as the instructor as well - what a great week that was!
You just reminded me again why I do not want a boat. But have fun kids and please be safe out there. I know you will.
So happy and excited for y'all.
I am happy for you both, I have always dreamed of sailing more than a couple days. Your living my dream. Happy sailing, will be following.

WOW thanks for the insight. I love you guys because you give honest details. I can not wait till the sea videos come in.
Congrats! Thanks for taking us along for he purchase process.
Congrats on your new purchase! :)
Good luck with your new adventures on the seas! Can't wait to see your video when you're on your way! Cheers!
As "Rod" said....we are sailing, we are sailing.. Happy days!
Caveat... 'all' boats are a hole in the sea to throw money into,
but that won't stop you being happy.
So happy for you two. This Adventure has been awesome. Looking forward to more of Y'alls videos. Big Smile. :)
Thx so much for your awesome videos and letting us know the big and small facts of your boat buying process.
congratulations on getting your boat, looking forward to your on the water adventures
Wow!! That's great news. I'm so excited to watch your journey!!😄😄😄
Good luck guys, can't wait to follow your adventures afloat.
Congrats to you both! I am very happy for you!
OMG!! I'm so excited for you guys!! Congratulations!!! That one part at the end is weird. You can't come back to Florida for 6 months? What the heck is that about?
Yeah I thought the Wynns were American? need a visa or something?
This was great for me, a whole lot of things I was needing to know and now do! I will be saving up to get a boat "someday" but wow so many things I didn't know. THANK YOU!!!
I'm never gonna buy a canoe let along a 43 foot sailboat, but I'm glued to your channel like a fly on a fly strip. Very educational and entertaining (but still useless to me). I'll miss the RV videos. Can't wait to see the shenanigans you get yourself into at sea. Good Luck!!
+raybbj ha ha...I am glad you are at least entertained! thanks for watching!
This is why RVers follow you guys. You give honest opinions and show the real deal. So glad you're now a boater. I would love to live on a boat, but I need to stay near land for my business. But, I get to live through you, lol.
D
Happy that you two are following your dream. Wanting to buy a trawler tugboat to take the Great American Loop.
Congratulations guys! I can't wait to see a video with boat tour. Also really looking forward to all the new adventures.... And keep those RV tips coming as long as you can.
Almost forgot... Thanks for sharing a lot of details on the search, offer, and financing. Many of us will benefit from this information.
Looks like a Wynn win. Seriously you guys are great. Thoroughly enjoyed this video 😊.
Good Luck! Looking forward to following your new adventures.
What a cool adventure. Looking forward to watching future videos.
Negotiations to me are intimidating. A necessary part of life. Happy Things are going well for you. 👍👍
Thank you for your transparency with costs and details of what you went through with your purchase. Mazel tov and Godspeed.
Great video. Kudos on being willing to share in some of the details that are personal in nature and giving up how you made it happen.
Congrats! Love the name of your boat. It's brilliant!
This will be us in 2 years!!! I can not wait for this excitement!!!!!! Luckily we did the classes with Bluewater Sailing School and my hubby got his captains license so hopefully our insurance won’t be too bad!!
Best of luck with it! Fair winds & following seas!
This is so informative as we are moving toward the purchase of our own yacht. Thank you for the video!
LOL)
I'm envious, you are living the dream. 👍
Loved this! Being so transparent with the costs, etc.. nothing to hide. Old video but I'm jusr catching up!
LOVE it, we are doing the same thing with our Life insurance, and designed them for cash flow for life.. Awesome!
More adventures with The Wynns! Glad to see you two "navigating" the pits and snares of this new venture! Can't wait to see the various locations that you'll take us to! : )
Congrats & Fair Winds!
