I don't know why manufacturers didn't continue forward with this type of modeling synthesis. It could have been so much more interesting than just everything analog all the time. What a pity.
Physical modeling is so accurate. Much more so than samples. I was blown away when this synth came out. I had a TX16W back in the day too...Then I bought this. Absolutely profound!
I recently went to see an old friend who I wrote music with in the early to mid 1990s. I used my VL on just one instrumental piece. His girlfriend was sat listening to our old music for the first time and is appreciative of music in general. When this instrumental came on she immediately asked if it was a real bass guitar, despite all the other songs having good bass samples and competent playing. This made me smile inside very deeply!
I have had a VL-1m, the rack mount module version of VL-1, since 1996. This one makes still great sound today! I think it is a legend in the history of synthesizers.
Yamaha makes the best synths, period. Look past all the fan boy hype, and the marketing, and you’ll find this to be true. I always come back to Yamaha. Own one flagship of each major manufacturer, but I’m always on the Yamaha. I just realized this today too.
I can't believe I have never heard of this keyboard. I have been a keyboardist since I was a kid (a LONG time ago!) and I've had several different professional keyboards over the decades from most of the major manufacturers, including Yamaha, Korg, Roland and Nord, but I don't ever remember seeing this keyboard for sale in a store/online or reading about it. I'm assuming that's because they unfortunately did not as many as other flagship keyboard models, which was likely due to the cost of ~$6000 when it was released in 1994. It's amazing how expressive, organic and "real" sounding some of these virtual instruments are, especially considering it was the mid 90's and they are all produced by modeling, not sampling.
Sad thing is that this stuff been around like 30 years now and companies won't give us this type of physical modeling unless you have roland yamaha or korg there are few vst's out there that do this but don't sound the same you can check this guy on you tube Ben Jordan he has a few videos on some vst's that do this.
There's something deliciously nuts about a Scotsman watching a Japanese man using a massively expensive synth to play a beautifully modeled bagpipe snippet of Scotland The Brave... :D Brilliant synth - too ahead of its time and too expensive. Virtual acoustic was the big thing of the mid-90s, with the VL1, Korg's original Wavedrum and the Roland VG8. Only Roland seems to have really stuck by it sadly, although Korg have brought a new mini-Wavedrum out...
Actually there's way more Physical Modelling out there than I expected. Both Logic Pro & Ableton include physical synths. All the electronic piano sounds in Logic are modelled by Sculpture, and similarly KORG's OASYS. Reaktor has had the Steam Synth for 10+ years, then you have PianoTeq, various UAD string synths etc. So the technology is alive and out there, you simply might not realise it!
Actually Physical Modelling can be found in various mid to high range synths. What I think is still unbeatable is the expressiveness of Yamaha's breath controllers and that is actually the key for a natural sound.
In 1993, I remember going into Goodman Music in North Hollywood and they had one of these in a small demonstration room at the rear of the store. 3 hours later I emerged, stunned. If I'd had the money, I would have walked out with that beast right then and there.... the most amazing synth since the Minimoog. And Yamaha shelved this line of instruments? Ouch. :(
Romplers sell. It's unfortunate but that's why they stopped all the FM synths and analog sims. That also what explains how Roland ended up making something like the jupiter 80.
The jupiter 80 is more than just a rompler.....they sampled lots of oscilators so you can build your own sounds and they also have waveform oscilators. Its not a bad synth for creating sounds
emilshere All the Roland stuff starting from the JV1080 have filters on samples (with envelopes per layer for volume + cutoff + pitch and LFOs), so yeah you can use them as synths, and it's basically all successive improvements of the same tech. I'll admit you can do lots of stuff with that, which is why that tech has lasted for over 20 years...
Yamaha buiiiru one! Those were the days: Yamaha’s VL series, Korg Prophecy, Korg Z1… something new at last. It’s a shame they didn’t sell that well back then. I still love my Prophecy.
Went searching for physical modelling and found your video - I had forgotten about the Yamaha VL1 - some great sounds but you obviously need to learn the correct techniques to get the best out of it - Impressive for the time it was made - you also don't need to have massive sample memories with physical modelling
This is probably the most revolutionary synthesizer since the Minimoog, and yet VL1 has close to zero recognition, and Minimoog is prized left and right, front and rear. I guess the price of the VL1 was too steep, and public turned away from it, and Yamaha being business conscious company, killed it, together with incredible 16-note polyphony acoustic modeling synth VP1. Very very very sad story...
Great demos, the synth sounds so expressive! I wish there was a software synthesizer that had the same expressive quality. Maybe SWAM is close, but still not good enough.
Oh, there is... try the VA instruments for the Kyma. (; Well, I didn’t want to start a fight over what synth is the best.. we have thousands of them here on TH-cam. It’s just a statement about the great era of innovative digital synthesizers, disregarding specific algorithms and such.
Hmm, no other modeling synth then. Today it is a very common concept (software mostly), even though most of them are not in the high quality the VL-1 provides and often just one model (e.g. strings). A good example today is the Roland V-Piano, the AAS-String Studio VS-1, KORG brought the Z1 in 1997 with physical modeling and MOSS technologie.
Yes, Yamaha had such great technological developments, but the VL series didn't sell well, public didn't buy it so Yamaha turned their back on Virtual Acoustic Synthesis, which is such a pity. Hopefully one day in the future someone pick up where Yamaha left off. Maybe software synthesizers have been there for years, I don't know, I am not using soft synths. Also, VL1 was followed by 16-note polyphony VP1, but only two or three VP1's were sold...
I have the EX5 too & it's a great synth. I'd like to try a BC3 with the EX5 as well. It would be great with the VL. The Korg Triton (I have one) MOSS board is also capable of VL. I bet a BC3 would be cool with the Triton too.
Have an EX5 as well. Just dusted it off last night, loaded a new bank of sounds from ex5tech (UK mirror), and was really blown away by a couple of patches within the bank that reminded me of this (or perhaps some other) VL-1 demo. I've tried plugging in the photo-optic sensor from a Mike Matthew's Soul Kiss wah pedal into the EX5, but no dice. :-( The light sensor on it has an 1/8" jack, but it took me a few years before i ever thought to try hooking it into the EX5. The Soul Kiss is a rare find. In the only demo's i could find they are holding the sensor between their teeth and then opening/closing their mouth to alter the amount of wah, but i found it worked much better by lying it on the floor and waving my foot across it. ...You know, like an exo-solar planet transiting its sun. ;-)
Correction. 700 signatures. *wink* =D I saw some guy on here, doing cool things w/a BC3 & Korg Kronos. I have a Korg Kronos X 88 & I'd love to try it w/a BC3. Yamaha obviously can't re-release a synth like the CS-80. That would be too expensive. But surly they could bring back the CS-5, 10, or 15, like Korg did w/the MS-20/Mini? If Yamaha could keep the new CS in the $499-$699 range ((MS-20 Mini = $599) I think they'd have a lot of buyers. Profits might not be HUGE, but they wouldn't lose money.
SAGA5505 I have for sale if your interested with breath controller and hard case and I did change the floppy drive to USB drive you will never have a problem.
That's why Roland has rehashed the Sound Canvas over and over for like 20 yeahs now, and that the new synths are stuff like the Jupiter 80... too bad yeah. My guess here is that the pro market has moved on to VSTs so that's where you'll see a ressurgence of more complex synths if there is one.
MySoundsYourEars I have one for sale if you're interested let me know know it comes with BC3 and hard case and I did modify the floppy drive to USB drive you will never have an issue with the drive

basically a Yamaha Vl1-m with a keyboard. The older brother of the vl70-m

Check out Harm Visser VSTs and plugins they are amazing, especially for KYMA
Rik MaxSpeed and check out samplemodeling.com their lineup sounds as realistic as I've ever heard, although it's a hybrid sample-synth

Amazing instrument! Sax, shakuhachi, clarinet, brass, dist guitar were just exceptional!
The modeling of the breakup at the high volume for shakuhachi is absolutely amazing. I have never heard shakuhachi that closely replicated.
this has got to be the best looking synth ever made, it is absolutely gorgeous
I approve of Yamaha's use of grey.
LemonSlice Yes, I agree the Chrome/Wood design are gorgeous. Check out the Yamaha VP-1...
Raydensheraj Oh yes, wood. So lovely. :)
Yup
To each their own, i always thought ot looks ugly as hell
I love this guy....He is so into what he does!
It is always a pleasure to watch your videos Ujiie. Thank you!
You don't need to understand Japanese to hear just how awesome this synth is! Wish Yamaha still used this technology!
While not understanding a single word or what you're saying I still enjoy all of your demos :-)
In 1993, I remember going into Goodman Music in North Hollywood and they had one of these in a small demonstration room at the rear of the store. 3 hours later I emerged, stunned. cause it really doesnt sound that hot. jupiter 80 does this better
@@jacobbrown1690 Actually the Physical modeling of the Jupiter 80 is vastly inferior and very simple in comparison to the VL-1
Great demos, the synth sounds so expressive! I wish there was a software synthesizer that had the same expressive quality. Maybe SWAM is close, but still not good enough.
PHYSICAL MODELING in a keyboard synth!!!!! How the hell did that not become a success? :O
check out roland

Turn on the auto-translate for a very entertaining review.
It's insane how use of the mouthpiece can help replicate the instruments that closely. Oboe and trumpet were uncanny
Claro que si, fuerte y claro.
Ninguna duda

buy a roland jupiter 80 , its the best modeling synth ever. will set you back 3400 though.
It's all about the controller interface. Maybe Yamaha could simply make a USB/MIDI keyboard controller with everything the VL1 or EX5 has to offer.
Katsunori Sensei. I miss the BC-3. Yamaha will produce more in future?? Greetings from México City.
I so much love this instrument!
what a unique and strange synth, I'd love to get one on Ebay
or PLG150 VL in A YAMAHA Synth. Like MU128

Sounds so good! Much better than the sample shit in the new keyboards
90年代前半の機種のVL1のほうが最近のウインドシンセより よっぽどリアルで良い音!驚き。
SAGA5505 I have for sale if your interested with breath controller and hard case and I did change the floppy drive to USB drive you will never have a problem.
Now I know what to buy if I will want simulate elephants.

ヤマハさん、お願いだからブレスコントローラ

jupiter 80 is the best modeling synth i ever played.
I love every preset, Thanks for sharing!
I REALLY wish that there was an english translation for this!
YT has made it so you can at least auto translate via CC
An unreal synth. A shame its so unaffordable as renaissance of this kind of synth would be very welcome in todays landscape.
this one is absolute impossible!!! Thank you yamaha!
the sax !!!! i want one right now
MySoundsYourEars I have one for sale if you're interested let me know know it comes with BC3 and hard case and I did modify the floppy drive to USB drive you will never have an issue with the drive
oh? is it good?
Very good! But I need english text.
すごい技術力のお化けシンセなのに、イマイチ世間の評価がないのが残念すぎる。もっと評価されてもいいシンセ。
VL-1 is polyphonic? i thought monophonic ... so how can two notes be held down ?? Am I missing something ?
These cost a fortune 2nd hand. Apple's Logic Pro X contains the Sculpture physical modelling synth plug-in which produces similar (stunning) sounds.
I am using Logic’s sculpture since it came out a while ago and I do have the Yamaha WX5 breath-controller. Unfortunately “sculpture” is nowhere close to real-time control compared to the VL Yamahas. I tried every possible combination of parameters to make it “sing” like this synth here - with no success. However - “sculpture” is of course a great instrument on its own and perfect to create all kinds of strange sounds…but it is not a VL
breathing control required to get synth sounds - I have enough trouble already thank you very much indeed.
I have the VL7 and it's a very good machine ! I love it !
VL-7 has 1 voice polyphony, while VL-1 has 2 voice polyphony

Fantastic instrument!
Erm... I know what the VL1 is and was capable of. But still, waveguide synthesis has made a lot of progress since.
amazing demo
well they did make the plg-cards for use in their motif range ( not cs and xf )
yamaha have a fully sampled vl1 for xf/xs out there
jacob brown: sampled VL1? Impossible mission.
PLG-100VL
What is this device you are using to replicate mouth instruments?
I would assume it's Yamaha's BC-1, 2, or 3.

It wasn't successful commercially. They sold very few units. 99% of sales are home keyboards and sample-playback keyboards. That's the sad reality world we live in.
VANGELIS USED ONE OF THESE VL1 'S ON THE ALBUM VOICES FROM 1996 ...HE USED A SAXOPHONE SOUND FOR ONLY 15 SECONDS ON ONE OF HIS SONGS YOU COULD HARDLY HEAR IT IN THE MIX ...AFTER THAT HE NEVER USED IT AGAIN 🤣
The sitar was used in Super Mario 64
YAMAHAの現行機種でVA音源はステージアにしか搭載されてないという事は残念です、この動画で聴く分には大変魅力的なのですが、あまり需要が無かったのですね・・・・・・
Still rumors of an upcoming brandnew Reface VL version people!!
Really??? What's your source?
great !
Amazing intro :))
ahhhh ... thanks!
you mean yourself....

Did any band use this synth to make albums/songs?
Koji Kondo used the Sitar sample for Super Mario 64
The trumpet model is used in the theme song for the HBO series, "Oz".
Yamaha VP1 next?
😉😂
after checking the price when it was released in 1994
its no wonder why they failed , even its an innovation of that era but its can't find its marketing point, too expensive and being duophonic is not enough for gigging musician
and for studio ,you can find much better instrument at this price
Initial price at 4000pounds
yes
Yamaha had owned a great keyboards with great technologies , now only provide us with Stupid Motif models ! why ???
we need this functions in next workstation of Yamaha please :(
korevanè!! hahahahah ma cosa vorrà dire?
Tbh listening to the VP1 demos it did have some serious sound issues (plucked string sims are really hard to make sound good for some strange reason).
But yeah just look at what people buy nowadays - all the stupid arrangers and re-re-re-rehashed romplers. The Jupiter 80 makes me sick - so, SO lame. That's what people pay money for! Very unfortunate that this killed physical modeling.
cool
