- On Labor Day, 2014 - Reading & Northern 425 pulled a mixed photo freight train for a group of photographers from Port Clinton, PA to Mahanoy City, PA. Big Jim Video Productions was present for the event, and rode along, capturing many of the photo runbys along the way. CNJ 113 also was in attendance, and originally was supposed to doublehead with 425. However, after a spectacular opening side-by-side runby, the engine developed an issue that sidelined it for the day. No matter, as 425 put on an incredible show with her loud and fast runbys. Enjoy this look at the Anthracite Express!
What an opening shot. Two steamers side by side, loved it. Thank you for posting.
Thanks! I definitely loved that runby as well...

Excellent video. After six years of ambivalence, I think this finally won me over on 425
Thanks! This really won me over even more too...
Excellent as always. Loved the shots of the 425 coming over the bridge and flying by on the straight away (12:00). Watched them a few times. And the sound was great too. Another big thumbs up.
Thanks a lot!
All I can say is wow. Even just on my computer those runbys are amazing. Makes a guy very jealous! Fantastic production, Thanks for sharing!
Thank you very much - I appreciate it!
Esa loc.that loc..the sound is beautiful....
I love the opening with the two locomotives moving side by side together.
That was a sweet runby...
Big Jim Video Productions 425s whistle sound like Leigh valley coal 126s whistle
Love those Reading company whistles
Me too!
There were only 3 whistles on 425 this day. Started out with a reading hooter (not 2102's) then to a N&W long bell and then a Nathan three chime. The N&W hooter was put back on for the return romp.
Really good side by side catch with the 116 and the 425
Thanks a lot!
I just love Central Railroad of New Jersey 113!
+Art Anderson Me too! New video to come soon...
Art Anderson there was
Wish I had one of those in my back yard !!!
Wouldn't that be sweet? :)
The opening film footage is fantastic. Your video efforts are real good. Thanks .
+Caseman78 Thanks a lot!
Awesome. I think the St. Nicholas and Molino runby's were the best, as well as the unrestrained sound on the High Bridge.
They were loud one way or the other! Thanks!
Awesome video Jim!!!! Loved the last two runbys the most!
Thanks!
I believe the high pitched Hooter on 425 is a Reading hooter. Most likely 2102's. Could be a sign of things to come!
Well - I know from other videos and other visits, they do like to use a hooter whistle on 425 - hopefully a sign of things to come, but maybe not...
Big Jim Video Productions well the N&W whistle probably not, just paying tribute to the coal hauling roads. It is the Anthracite express. lol. But considering there is a video on youtube of 113 arriving in port Clinton with 425 and 2102 waiting for her, idk. I mean maybe Andy missed the sound of 2102 and put the hooter on. long story short a T1 needs to run again, especially after the crap pulled on 2100...
the same hooter in the video was privately owned and NOT 2102's the last engine it was last on was 2016 steam season on CNJ 113
Its definitely a Reading Hooter though!
I LOVE I LOVE I LOVE THIS TH-cam VIDEO!!!!!!! AND I LOVE STEAM TRAINS/STEAM LOCOMOTIVES SOOOOOOOO MUCH!!!!! :-D
I WAS A WORKER WITH LOCOMOTIVE STEAM....BY MANY YEAR..
GREAT........I LIKE IT......THIS IS A GOOD VÍDEO......
Thank you!
Sds.Jim
I would love to include both locomotives to the 165 year event I'm attempting to organize here in Hornell for May 2016.
awesome! i heard about this on their website, but I didn't know the 113 would be involved in this. but for the price of $200 per ticket! that's just too crazy, even if it is a rail fan special, also the single chime does not fit the 425 very well (in my opinion) but awesome video! :D
I agree single chime whistles don't fit 425
I hear ya on the $200 being crazy, the fall foliage trips are alot cheaper and it is basically the same distance.
axle17921 yea! i already have plans for the fall foliage excursion! i did that excursion last year and it was awesome!
which whistle of 425 do you prefer? 0:26, 7:13 or 8:25
Hey, Uncle Jim. it's Ben. I subscribed to your channel and like your videos.
+Mark F Thanks Ben!!
awesome video but the side by side shots are the best.
I'm glad you like the video!
Epic Job
425 doesnt have that squeak anymore!
Thank goodness!
What kind of squeak did she have before? Could you please enlighten me?
No disrespect to the 113 crew and Reading and Northern, but this really reminded me of Old Iron from The Railway Series!
How many whislte change did 425 have?? I think two whistles is from the N&W and other I forgot, but they did a awesome job!!!!!!!!!
There were two whistle changes between two whistles, I believe. She started and ended with the same whistle, I think - and used a second whistle in the middle.
I hear 4 whistles: rdg hooter, some other kind of hooter, Nathan 3 chime, and an N&W hooter
Conrail6370 Thanks
Nice video
425 had 4 different whistles first a really light hooter then a lower hooter then a Nathan 3 chime then another really low hooter
Jim is the whistle heared on 425 in the begaining is that 2102 hooter whistle? It sounds like the 02 whistle cant wait to see the 2102 to run when shes is restored!
Honestly, I don't know - you'd have to ask one of the whistle "experts" (sadly, not my area of expertise) which one that is.
trainmaster90 productions I think 425 is wearing a Reading Railroad single chime hooter whistle.
It is indeed 2102's Reading Hooter.
She’s back. They did test runs on her for three separate days to Reading Outer Station, Tamaqua, and Jim Thorpe. They also put the locomotive on a fifty empty car coal train the previous week.
is that whistle worn by 425 at the side by side run the same whistle 2102 had before she was retired?
not 2102's but a reading single chime hooter
But it does sound similar to 2102's
The caboose is beautiful too...
Indeed - and thanks!
They are best friends 😅😊
Haulin' at that last shot!!!
She totally was!
Not as impressive as 2102's run but mighty impressive nonetheless! Fantastic work!
I'll agree to that - I wish it was 2102 and a whole lot more hoppers too!
Indeed!
Enjoy the beautiful scenery , Nice 👍 video
I also do content like that
Where u been big jim? Seems like your vids haven't been up in a LONG TIME.
Nice steam train race.
Boy that rail to the right seems to be splintering
Looks ok to me...better than the rails on the left, anyway.
Big Jim Video Productions the right rail I should have said
I wish this was revenue freight
Me too!! Keep your eyes peeled though, they will occasionally use 425 to move/help or break in the locomotive after winter maintenance, on a regular freight train...
Ok I know 113 is the largest operating 0-6-0 and 425 is a Baldwin pacific of modest size, but if you take that part away which engine is bigger? 113 clearly has the bigger boiler and 425 the bigger wheels, but overall which loco is bigger?
425 is larger weight only by 12,000 pounds I believe.
That’s two trains.
Also one more thing I wonder how the whistle is not loud for you evey time I hear whistle or a horn right next to me it's so loud
It was VERY loud during the last few runbys especially...
i WAS telegrafist and other Jobs.
What's the name of this railroad
This took place on the Reading & Northern Railroad.
