  • The way to set up a hard drive, SD card, CF card, etc. using a Windows 10 PC. A few others have made these videos, but I figured it might be time for an update on the procedure. Plus, I cover the 3 major file systems, and the 3 major operating systems.

    I never comment on TH-cam videos, but this tutorial is the only one worth watching to set up a new CF card for the Amiga. Well explained and clear at each step of the process. Until I watched this I was pulling my hair out trying to get WinUAE to recognise the partitions, this video solved everything.

    I get to the restart and then stuck at Not a DOS disk in DH0. I did not change file systems. Edit: I think I figured it out, I have 3.2 cd which worked fine until this step. Then I had to go to floppy and get the ADF from the CD in WinUAE for it to boot because the cd boot priority is after the cf hd boot priority.

    One gotcha I found when trying this recently. I had to copy the hd tools file to the RAM disk and run it from there. Before then all I got was the volume full error. Once I copied it to the RAM disk, we were off to the races so to speak. This was with os 3.1.4.

    Nice tutorial... well explained... just one question when dealing with larger drives for example 16GB and 32GB are there any limitations to the size and number of partitions?

    • @retrofriends
      @retrofriends  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes. There is a 4 gig limit for older OS's. I think you need either 3.5, 3.9, or 3.1.4. You can alternatively patch the scsi.device on older OS's. There are higher thresholds, but they are in the hundreds of gigs at least. Read up on the limits for more info.

    Great video, nice and easy to follow. I'm currently in the process of recommissioning my old 1200 fitted with a Blizzard 1260 running @ 80mhz. I have 3.1 roms fitted in the 1200 and I'm looking at using 3.1.4 loaded into the Blizzards memory, but I'm not sure how to achieve this as its been over 20 years since I was last in front of workbench. Do you thinks I should try to configure this in Win UAE as a system running a 060. Or upgrade it once the compact flash is in the real 1200? BTW. I've managed to track down the Blizzard software and idefix 97 with wayback.

    • @retrofriends
      @retrofriends  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The speed of the processor is not as much of a factor, unless you consider the installation might be a little faster. I have never been able to afford an A1200, not in 1992 and not today, so my experience with the Blizzard 1200 is nil. I would try the WinUAE method, simply because it is relatively quick and easy. Just do the Workbench install by itself, then test it. Then if it works you can put the CF back in the PC and bulk copy all your programs, games, and data and set up a file manager, WHDLoad, etc. My videos are similarly split up, so watch the sequels to this video for more information.

    Great step by step. You talked about Terrible Fire. I have one and I found a SSD module will not work with it. I have the EIDE.device in Rom. Is the Compact Flash one of the only ones working with the Terrible Fire? They don't say exactly what will work with it.

      I'm not quite sure how to answer that. Check my channel for my CD32 videos. I have a terrible fire in my CD32 with a compact flash and adapter that might answer your question. I didn't have any problems setting that up using the WinUAE method.

    I have a few questions if you don't mind. I've installed a premade Workbench 3.1 Amiga 1200 compact flash drive I bought from Amiga kit and upgraded to kickstart 3.1 rom chips. 1) Do I need to install any software on my Amiga? I believe the flash card has whdload on it but I have not run the installer. 2) How does running games that came on more than one 3.5 floppy disk work if the images are all on the compact flash. There is no way to "insert disk 2". 3) Would a Gotek drive be redundant since I can put files on the compact flash drive, or does it add any functionality the compact flash cannot? Thanks! Once everything is up and running I may be visiting your Ebay store for some Amiga goodies.

    • @retrofriends
      @retrofriends  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can install anything you want. There isn't enough space here to explain how WHDLoad works, but there are plenty of other sources of info on the web. Suffice it to say, the purpose of WHDLoad is to make the games more compatible and to run off the hard drive. Games are converted to WHDLoad and you must use the coverted games or convert them yourself. Most people get on the web and find a huge WHDLoad game collection download, or buy a CF with them on it. Thanks a head of time for buying something from me. I recommend a Gotek. I also sell an external gotek adapter, and 3.1 lets you boot off it.

    I have a seagate st9300ag that was taken out of my old amiga due to it not booting. I would love to connect this drive to my PC, but I cannot find anyway of doing this online. The AT interface of the old amiga drive is not compatible with IDE readers. Is there not a cable/converter of some sort that would allow this? I've done tons of research and cannot find any further info ?

    • @retrofriends
      @retrofriends  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      IDE drives on Amigas are extremely rare. Soneone would have had to spend hundreds of hours and tons of money to create an adapter/software that only a handful of people would use. The IDE interface that Amiga controllers use is a first-generation IDE, not the same drives and controllers as the later widespread IDE we all are familiar with.

    Thanks for the great video. I probably watched it quite a few times, set a physical 2,5 inch drive with it, and it works fine when running it in WinUAE (I installed AmigaOS 3.2), but when I plug it into my A1200, it doesnt work. It doesn't appear on the boot menu. The drive itself is working, if i connect the cable wrong (I got desperate and tried it), the orange LED lights up and that's about it. I have no clue why it wouldn't work, I suspect it has something to do with the boot sequence, but can't put my finger on it. I mean, it does boot with WinUAE in no time, so not sure why it would be any different in the A1200. Would much appreciate any help on this. Any ideas? :)

    • @retrofriends
      @retrofriends  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't think it would be the boot sequence. If you can, try to set up the drive using Workbench. If you have troubles in that method, you know it's hardware. I really put all my time and effort into making this video, and I don't know if I have too much information remaining.

    Hi, I followed this to the tee, successfully created three partitions on a 4G SD card using the pfs3aio file system and the hex values you have provided ( DosType to 0x50465303 and Max Transfer to 0x1fe00 -- curious to know where you found these values). The New Partition mouse click sequence had to be precise, and while that was not-so-obvious, I figured that out.
    When I restart the emulator the partitions appear as expected, however, I am unable to Format each partition from the Info menu. It seems to flash an error message, but it passes so quickly I cannot catch it. Do you think it could not locate the Format program?
    I am using v3.1 ROM and v3.1 Install ADF from Amiga Forever. Did you had something in your Utilities folder for the format utilities?

    • @scottnieman490

    after using diskpart, the drive does not show in the dropdown in uae; or to be precise, it show as unknown but it does not seem to be picked at all. Running hdtoolbox show nothing on it. What is the problem?

    • @retrofriends
      @retrofriends  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is difficult to figure out what you mean by "does not seem to be picked at all" (language barrier perhaps?). If it shows as "UNK" in the WinUAE drop down, you should be able to select it. It is impossible for me to know with the information given what the problem is. Such inquiries would, I imagine, need to contain every detail, which would mean at least two paragraphs rather than two sentences. A shot in the dark: Are you running WinUAE as an "Administrator" 5:05

    • @fcf8269
      @fcf8269 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@retrofriends Yes, ESL here. The issue was indeed permission-related. When I was running WinUAE it was running as regular user, so access to the partition was possible but no data was written on it. Although I was expecting that UAE would be able to read the drive at least; but it was not the case.
      So to summarize what I did:
      - After diskpart, I initialized the SD card in windows, but I didn't create a partition.
      - When I ran WinUAE I ran it as admin, and modified the drive; once saved, the partitions were saved on the disk and the RDB block was written finally on the disk.
      I just continued on the Amiga the setup using PFS3, and it was working fine after that. Not sure why it works for your out of the box, maybe it is a different version of WinUAE? (I have the latest one as this week, 6./6/2021).
      Another thing that was different was the type of controller used; some videos use the UAEHF device controller, which is only for accessing virtual partitions like the HDF files. For actual hardware you need to use the standard SCSI device. If you change in hdtoolbox the device used, you can set your SD/CF card as uaehf device; or if you use the standard settings for hdtoolbox, that is by default using scsi device, so when you mount your SD/CF card in Winuae, you must use the actual hardware emulation option to use the A1200/4000 controller, which use the scsi device.
      No matter what you pick, but they must match; so if you mount in Winuae the SD/CF card, your settings for hdtoolbox must match.
      Thanks again for the reply; it was nice to spend hours again like I used to do in the 90s, to get my Amiga up and running :)

    I'm following this exactly (except I'm installing WB3.1) but when I put the CF card into my real A1200 and as soon as it tries to boot, it says PFS-III Error Requester 'Read 1 Error 4294967293 on block 16138 + 6' and doesn't get any further. Does anyone know what I've missed? The CF card is a 4GB SanDisk which works just fine in UAE. PFS version is the latest. Two partitions, one roughly 500MB, and another one 3.5GB.

    • @retrofriends
      @retrofriends  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It seems like there's some file system error. I'm sure that if you use the fast file system it would work fine, but I'm sure you'd prefer PFS. Sometimes using the latest version is not the best idea. New features means new bugs. Needless to say I'm not one of those guys who upgrades to the latest ROM the minute it becomes available.
