I think more consideration of the context of the time. This poem was written just after the 1891 shearer’s strike. There was a fundamental conflict between the people who were on the bottom- the people Lawson identified with--and the people with the money.
When I saw the thumbnail I was like “wait.. isn’t my last name lawson?” Turns out I’m his great great niece. Just in case you don’t believe me, my real last name was Larson but it had to be changed to lawson because when they write down the last names the r looked like a w but there was no rubber/eraser back then so they had to change it to lawson
