My father lived in Mizocz, Western Ukraine before being sent to a labour camp until wars end in West Germany. Still a young boy, he and half his family now refugees relocated to Australia.
I never understood why, whenever I'd ask dad about his life during ww2 he'd always reply, I don't want to talk about it.Only once when I was in my early 20's. Did open up about it.
One day while having a few Whiskeys with him at home I asked him. He said he saw children being bayoneted onto fires, people lined up and machine gunned, people hanging in the streets. Also neighbours fighting neighbours, complete anarchy.
I then understood why he never wanted to re-live those memories.

Thank you. My maternal grandparents emigrated from Western Ukraine to Canada about 1920 so they were well established, although poor, long before any war.He was very intelligent and was always up to date on current world events. @@claudefields5941 1/5 of the jews killed, around 1.6 were murdered by volunteering ukranians who also rounded up and clubbed their own countrymen, women & children to death. When Soviets were winning those same ukraninans who were pictured smiling over the dead bodies were then running to the US to beg for help and wanted to switch sides after commiting crimes under the nazi banner. It's very fitting that Ukraines story isn't told more today...if it was people would be less happy about their military aiding Ukraine today in the open murder of their own Russian speaking ukranian countrymen.

That's what some people think. They think that Ukraine deserves what's happening to it now because of its Holocaust past. What they don't realize is that Ukraine is a different place now than it was then. For starters, Ukraine is an independent country now. During the Holocaust, it was still part of the Soviet Union. Now, it's a democracy. It's free from the influence of the Soviet Union. I think the words of Elie Wiesel said it best. "I don't believe in collective guilt.
