    RULES:
There are many variations to this game, these rules are is for the classic two-rank Mancala.
The object of the game is to capture the most stones. Setup: layout the board horizontally between two players and place 4 stones into each of the 12 small pockets. Board is divided into two rows of 6 pockets each. Each player controls the 6 pockets on the side closest to them. The two larger pockets are called Mancolas. Each player owns the Mancola to the right of their row.
Pick a player to go first. On your turn pick up all the stones in any one of the pockets on your side of the board. Moving counter-clockwise from the pocket picked, deposits one of the stones in each pocket you pass until the stones run out. If you run into your own mancola, deposit one stone in it. If you run into your opponent's mancola, skip it.
If the last piece you drop is in your own mancola, take another turn immediately. If the last piece you drop is in an empty pocket on your side of the board, you capture that piece and any pieces in the hole directly opposite of it. Always place all captured pieces in your mancola.
The game ends when all six spaces on one side of the board are empty. The player who still has pieces on his side of the board when the game ends, capture all of those pieces and puts them into their mancola. Count all the pieces in each mancola. The player with the most pieces, wins.

In Karnataka, India we call it chennamane. But it has 7 pockets on each side and during the coarse of the game ,we do not deposit the stone to the player's mancala. But whatever is collected from the pocket is placed in the player's mancala. Hence game is almost similar :)

In Vietnam, we call it Ô ăn quan (en: Mandarin Square Capturing)
the rules are mostly the same, except:
-In each player's mancala, there's a bigger stone called "Quan" (King(?)). Each king is worth 10 stones
-You place your stones in all spots, even in your opponent's mancala
-Once the player places a stone on a square, they dont end immediately. Instead, check if the square they're on, if the square is:
+Next to a mancala (turn end)
    +Is a mancala (turn end)
+Is next to an empty square (capture + turn end)
If none of the above, then the player continues their turn, taking the stones from the next square, placing them down and repeat until one of the above happens, that's when their turn ends.
-Once the player ends placing, and they're next to an empty square, they get to capture all pieces on the next square after the empty one (yes, even the ones in a player's mancalas)
-Captured pieces dont go into mancalas, instead they're kept off the board by the player that captured them.
-The game ends when both kings are captured.

If you land on an empty pocket on your own side of the board AND your opponent’s pocket is also empty, must you capture your own stone? We have tried playing it both ways and it really messes up strategy if you have to capture them.

    • @HenrySpeir
      @HenrySpeir 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

No. Your stone stays where it is and it's the next players turn. But, having said that, as long as you are consistent for both players, I guess it would ultimately be a wash since there would be no advantage to either player.

My cups are empty on my side, which signifies the end of the game... why in the world does the opponent get to gather up their remaining stones and deposit them in their mancala? Seems like an automatic win for your opponent... every time.
    Calculus was easier.
I know... let's reverse that thought, and 'force' the emptiness on your opponents side and fill yours.
    Brilliant! 😂

The ending is the dumbest rule. If you go out, you should get remaining pieces of opponents left on board. Seems dumb they would get to keep them and add them to their score.

I think it's the opposite - it's a clever rule that ensures that you keep this other aspect of scoring in consideration as you play. The goal isn't necessarily to be the first to clear your side; there is strategy involved at the end to "slow walk" your remaining stones so that they can remain on your side rather than go over to the other side.

@@HenrySpeir I agree... it adds to the strategy of not letting your opponent build up stones on their side... either by landing in an empty pocket and taking theirs or by forcing them to play a pocket that has a lot of stones
