- This video presents an in-depth retrospective on significant developments surrounding Mount Everest's 1924, 1960, and 1996 expeditions over the past year.
Starting with the 1924 expedition, the 100-year anniversary brought a surge of new information, with archives releasing a wealth of documents and exhibits drawing public interest. Even after the anniversary passed, enthusiasm remained steady, fueled by discoveries such as Irvine's boot. Comparisons of public interest in Mallory and Irvine to historical figures like Neville Chamberlain and Ramsay MacDonald reveal their enduring intrigue. The accessibility of archival material has empowered independent researchers, affectionately dubbed "snow monkeys," to analyze Everest history with unprecedented depth.
Key revelations from the archives include details about the 1924 expedition's gear-such as the number of ice axes, chocolate supplies, and medical provisions-and the discovery that Irvine's personal camera was not a Kodak VPK but a plate camera. Further analysis suggests the Willisch ice axe belonged to Mallory, not Irvine, based on discrepancies in size and the absence of identifying marks on Irvine's known equipment. Perhaps most intriguingly, no references to the First or Second Step were found in any contemporary accounts.
Another point of interest is the missing items from Mallory's remains, including a pouch he likely used to store summit rocks and pieces of the rope tied to him. Despite the return of certain personal effects to Mallory's family, key items remain unaccounted for, contributing to the ongoing mystery.
Turning to the 1996 disaster, significant developments emerged when an old interview surfaced in which Jon Krakauer admitted to fabricating parts of his famous book, "Into Thin Air." The revelation led to widespread reassessment of his credibility, while Krakauer's editor was found to have made misleading statements about the book's rushed publication. Despite these controversies, Krakauer's public engagement with the topic has waned, and further analysis highlights errors and inconsistencies in his account.
Regarding the 1960 Chinese expedition, the past year saw noticeable changes to its Wikipedia page, with dedicated editors finally overcoming persistent resistance to revisions questioning the credibility of the summit claim. This development marks a significant victory in the online Everest research community.
Finally, the video discusses the continuing secrecy surrounding recent discoveries, including Irvine's boot, and National Geographic's tight control over the narrative, particularly regarding their 2019 search efforts. Despite obstacles, the Everest research community remains vigilant in their pursuit of the truth.

One of my favorite channels. No nonsense. Objective. Intelligent.
“Krakauer has abandoned it like it was Yasuko Namba on the descent.”
My mouth dropped open. That is one deep but seemingly appropriate insult.
"I can see pebbles" (summit rocks?) - thank you Michael for plowing through the noise and helping humanity to connect the dots.
The fact that George Mallorys body was not examined in a more forensic manner is a disgrace. Not only was the examination incompetent, but the expedition was peopled by liars and thieves. The terms shambolic and disgraceful describe the mission perfectly.
💯🎯
@@localbodI too felt Mallory should have been removed off the mountain. It was possible at that time & elevation. He should have had a place of rest where he could be honored by everyone, especially family.
Those yahoos committed a crime against History. A scrum of attention seeking children.
All those "missing" items. Are those not rightfully the property of the Mallory heirs?
You people are nuts. Wtf would they want to bring the body down. Mallory wanted to be on that mountain, knowing he could very well end up being part of the mountain. BTW, he's in the death zone or close, and he's been laying there for 75 years. They were on an angle 45'or steeper. With 30% of the air there is at sea level. Mallory would be happy to know he died doing what he loved. Mallory and Irvine were not wimps.
So am I automatically classified as a "Mountain Nerd" if I wish there was a Michael Tracy presentation every week? Wouldn't it be great if there was a Michael Tracy for every historical uncertainty and confusion?
Another well researched video. Well done. I'm glad we have independents like you to seek & bring out the truth. Best wishes from the UK
Doesn't matter what it's about, new Michael Tracy must be viewed. 10:44 Burn... RIP Yasuko
This is my favourite channel, thank you.
I was 13 in 1996. I had been surfing the web since AOL 2.0 (1994). My dad’s hobby was computers so I had more access to the internet than a lot of my friends. Its ridiculous to say the internet did not exist in 1996. AOL 3.0 was released in 1996. The main web browser was netscape. Most people had some exposure to the internet by that time.
@@shewearsfunnyhat Somebody - either Krakauer or Kasichke - wrote that, thanks to the Internet, the families at home sometimes knew more about what was happening on the mountain than the actual expedition members. Kasichke has a whole goddamn collection of letters he exchanged with his wife while on the mountain. That statement is ridiculous.
Every time I am reminded that they stole his underwear, I get to be pissed off like it was the very first time I found out.
I always also feel outraged because the pictures of Mallory's body were published without regard to the feelings of his surviving children.
Somehow i forget it every time, and the cycle continues.
Thank you for sharing your diligent research and your passion 😄👍
Always look forward to your videos. Fantastic in every way. Godpeed!
10:45 that was savage 😂
Thank you Michael, I always enjoy your videos 🙏🙏
Hope you keep doing what you're doing Michael. Facts and critical analyses are much appreciated.
I am excited for the Neal Beidleman video.
When Into Thin Air was released, I read it cover to cover. Almost nonstop. Didn't sit well with me. I then read the climb xover to cover almost nonstop. And then the illustrated version of Into Thin Air.
Michael Tracy is spot on. As usual.
If you read it and have ever climbed any sort of mountain in bad weather then you know the man was lying.
Thank You, Michael.
10:45 Michael destroyed the guy 😭😭
It is stunning (and sad) how much my opinion of NatGeo has sunk over recent years.
@@T_Mo271 disneyfied.
I watch these videos because I am not a mountaineer, never wanted to be a mountaineer, and never will be a mountaineer. They make me feel that I have made the right choices in life.
Promoting crap clothing and being a shill for the Chinese government, what’s not to like about that?
hey Michael, I appreciate how much effort you take to expose the truth. Your videos are clear and concise and easy to follow. I'm 100% a believer now! Thanks for everything you do and I look forward to more content.
Thank the Yeti, a new upload
It's disgusting that they stripped Mallory of his underwear, especially when he had living children at the time. Even Otzi the Iceman's remains have been treated with more respect.
Great work, as always Michael. Thank you 🤝
I somehow missed the video on Mallory's clothing having been removed. Jesus Christ. I had to come back and make sure I heard that right.
How in the almighty fuck was that not a major, career-ending scandal for Pollard?
Thanks, I appreciate the summary and look forward to the new video's. $1.99 for the Kindle version of "Into Thin Air"? Thought about getting it at that price, but the Michael Tracey TH-cam membership remains much better value.
Definitely
If you must then buy it second hand paperback so Krakauer gets nowt
I wonder if Michael will ever meet Krakauer in a real life debate. That'd be a show to watch. No mountaineer myself, but, man, I love your shows.
Thanks Michael.Another top video
Wikipedia: Tracyism - the ability to force people to come to the right conclusion.
For anyone in the UK giggling at "Knickers", which today refers to women's underwear. Men, back then, did wear clothing called Knickers aka Knickerbockers.
Listen again.
@@markstevenson6635 and the odds of Mallory wearing American made knickerbockers are slim to none the Saxon is being purposefully obtuse.
Something tells me some of these mountaineers would make great used car salesman.
Michael, there should be four videos left in the 96 series: Bidelman’s choice, how JK discredits his critics (you said this was a future video), agreement between AC & Outside Magazine and a wrap up video. 😊
Always interesting
Great thank's!
(An Internet subscription became the most popular Christmas present, ("Årets julklapp"), in Sweden 1996. In 2000 had 51% of the Swedish homes access to Internet. Perhaps the two buddies should have given Sweden a visit before the book got published in 1997.)😸
Thanks for following the truth, no matter where it may lead us.
🔥
Thank you for this video. Fully captures the zeitgeist (spirit of the times) in the 1924 portion (in focus). I think we are coming to a common consensus that the development of a community database, plus the imminent rise of a cooperative post-communist (shen-yun?) china, will allow us to solve this mystery. Finding the rest of Andrew Irvine, finding the hiding places of the remaining oxygen bottles (say 4), and the Oxygen Racks, and greater access to the CTMA Museum in Lhasa, will bring many pieces of the puzzle to light. If I may ask a question, do you recall the story of a (female?) climber that found an Oxygen Rack on the North Ridge, then threw it down the Kangshung Face? I only bring this up to discuss the initial discovery location. Anyway, continue your good work. I (we) enjoy your detective work.
Tactical dot (.) in case more info in the topic, got intrigued 😶
Love the stone tablets the Yeti is carrying; my rusty Hebrew indicates something along the lines of “Don’t do it, be a fool and subscribe.” The more I think about it the more this stuff to do with Mount Everest strikes me as a microcosm of the broader “official narrative versus the truth” thing that we see playing out more broadly in the world.
Yetis have a simple religion with only two commandments. (1) Don't be a fool. (2) Like and Subscribe. You read the two pages together as one line.
@@michaeltracy2356 of course I should read tablets individually instead of as one line 🤣
Wonderful stuff Michael. Loved the comment about Sandy Irvine's diary: " ... including which women he was giving DNA samples to......"
I had to rewind to make sure I was hearing that correctly 😂😂😂
10:45 💀💀😂😂
No they didn't leave pieces of Mallory's rope on the mountain..too enticing of an artifact to leave behind..fercryinoutloud do any of those who discovered Mallory didn't pilfer?
My I'm a conspiracy theorist..but what was promised to authorities or donors for that expedition?..articles of clothing or gear from Mallory?
The 'bag' that might have contained summit rocks,Given to authorities who allowed the expedition to climb Everest and search for Mallory?
There's just too many sketchy claims and too much obfuscation and inconsistencies coming from that expedition for me NOT to theorize.
Why do you say they didn't search for summit rocks when T.P. says they did. I just don't understand the discrepancy.
Why would you believe anything TP says?
Why wouldn't I? I don't understand.
5:29...
Alastair Scott should know better, he's only protecting sales. A classic shill.
Are there any other 'mysteries' you would consider covering Mr.Tracy?
Exposing liars, inconsistencies and outright bs peddlers?
One of the least talked about tragedies! Should be as “popular” as Amelia Earhart ‘s botched situation and recovery efforts. We all know of that. This story and the tragedy of theft and secrecy should be more wide spread! So the truth can be maintained and not easily crunched into someone’s preferred narrative
DNA Samples to women- lol
😂
Giving DNA samples 😂😂🤣
