I would say it's less of a "trying to go back" and more of a liminal thing, in other words, being between the past and future, like an alternative present
As someone that grew up in the 80s and 90s, the visuals and music hit me really hard -- in both a good and a bad way. While much of my childhood and adolescence have been lost to memory, this video, as well as vaporwave and weirdcore, in general, helps me to recover what has dissappeared with the passage of time.
