I wouldn't say its part of the norm today because they're many countries than don't view it normal in their societies. i don't believe it will ever be the norm in the entire world bc heterosexual marriages have always been the ones who have constructed society. They have created families that keep the economy rolling. Heterosexual relationships in reality are the normal ones and best for society. But each society is different so to each their own.
The sort of "gender role" idea of one being a "house wife" and one working to "make the bacon" is interesting. I would like to think that modern relationships have wiped this idea out. Or is this just the particular story told at this particular time?
