  • This short (3m 47 sec) animated film supports our education programme for schools, but it should work for anyone who wants a quick introduction to David's story, and to some of the activities of the David Oluwale Memorial Association (DOMA).
It briefly traces his life and death in Leeds (1949-69), and it concludes with the Hibiscus Rising sculpture made for us by Yinka Shonibare CBE, RA. The sculpture is designed to flip the abject narrative of David's life and inspire hope and commitment to equality, hospitality and social justice for all.
It was made for us by the Leeds-based company called The Hungry Sandwich Club, from a script supplied by DOMA.
The sculpture and this film (and accompanying events) were made possible thanks to the work of the Leeds 2023 Year of Culture team, in conjunction with DOMA. This included raising funds from the National Lottery Heritage, the Arts Council England, small charities like DOMA, Scurrah Wainwright and the Lascelles' family, and lots of individual donors. It would not have happened without massive support from Leeds City Council. DOMA is truly grateful to you all.
