    Nice video I started Repairing real to real Tape recorders when I was 13 years old and I do repair them today Best way is not to use a A variable transformer the best thing to do is use light bulbs You can use one lamp bulb in Series With theA machine The light should glow Dim
    That will reform the Capacitors But when you turn the motor on The light will come Up bright that is normal I leave it on the lamp for about 3 hours And especially if it has not been used for quite a long time I hope this is helpful to everyone Please keep doing more videos

      I do have a dim bulb tester as well as my isolation variac box. I have also built a capacitor leakage tester with a reforming option which I can use. I'm going to be making more videos, its just a matter of feeling well enough after having that virus.

    Hi can you help I have a grinding 144 and the start knob does not turn please

      Not sure of that model but it could be in need of a complete relube on the moving parts. Grundig used a grease that went solid after a few years, if the machine has sat idle it can turn into a glue rather than grease.

    I am interested to buy a Grundig TK 46 or 47 with 3 speeds, in good running order, to listen to some very old songs of my youth

    Nice Vid,
    Do you know if I can play 1 7/8 speed on the Grundig TK64 ??

      I am not sure at all but you may find the manual online at somewhere like Elektrotanya or other manual sites. A google search should get you some results.

    While you did bring it up slowly, which is good for the dc supply filter cap, the motor phase capacitor was still given full voltage when you hit play. I have blown up many of the motor caps by doing this. Need a method to reform the motor phase capacitor

      maybe having it in play mode without a reel in it as I bring one up next time? Thanks for the advice... of course, I hadn't thought about the phase cap not being inline until play or other directional control being hit

      George Christofi I remember something about the motor getting hot as it’s not spinning but will have power through it.

      @@phantomrose1999 I'm not fully savvy with older tape machines but I can see that being the case with some running the motor in idle to keep the fan running which was sometimes at the botom of the shaft.

    I got mine as a Christmas present george . December 1962. It was still used in the mid 80'S. STILL HAVE 100's of tapes but I am not sure if they will play. They are old and up in the attic. Most enjoyable watching your video. See ya dude. Ps I am 65 so these old things interest me. Happy memories etc.

      Many thanks Jim. Your machine is older than I am! It should still work fine and the tapes should be ok as long as the rubber on the drive wheel has not hardened. Certainly this one was ok so I would hope yours was too.

      @@GeorgeChristofi might venture into the depths of the attic and try it out. Also up there somewhere is a nordmende radio circa 1964. I wish I knew how to fix things like you but some people have no talent . I can just about change a plug. See ya dude...

      @@jimsmethurst6113 It is something we learn... nobody was born to stick their hands inside stuff and fix it! I'm still learning with every new old set I work on because a lot of them were built before I was out of short trousers!

    Hello George. Do you think you would sell me the Grundig TK#14 as I have tapes that were my Mum's singing recordings and I dearly love to hear her voice again after so many years!

    I picked up one of these with missing screws and a drive wheel, where should I get parts for it?

    • @GeorgeChristofi
      @GeorgeChristofi  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You may be able to find stuff on ebay from a non worker. I think there are a couple of specialist parts shops across europe but they are very few and far between. You may want to ask a question in the antique radio forums either on facebook or on the web. One that might be most useful is Radiomuseum.org as they have a large German audience who may be able to source parts a lot easier than anywhere else.

      For a low end unit they are surprisingly robust and long lived. I do like mine and should really use it more.

    Wouldn't feeding it a low voltage from the variac just cause the machine to try drawing too much current?

    • @GeorgeChristofi
      @GeorgeChristofi  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It could but the main issue is that you don't want to blast the old filter capacitors with full voltage straight away in case they decide to say goodbye in a messy fashion. Starting them off gently can reform them into useful components if they havent died a death or dried out completely.

    • @KK-no7be
      @KK-no7be 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@GeorgeChristofi Ok, thanks. A bit like using a light bulb in series with the live to limit the current draw I suppose. Cheers.
