Just like to say a massive thank you to you, Antony Stagg! After getting rejected time and time again, I was starting to get really disheartened. After watching your videos I could see where I was going wrong. I took your advice on board, yesterday I went for an interview and this morning got a phone call to say I got the job. I'm so happy right now. Just goes to show how far a little encouragement, and advice as well as hard work and determination gets you. I will definitely recommend your videos to anyone who is looking for a new job. Thank you again! :)

I am a college student. How the heck do they expect us to work full time, get straight A's in college, be part of clubs, and do research. This is a very unrealistic goals.

tell me about it. welcome to the real world cuz u have people with no social life who actually do all of this and even if u think it's fair or not they will get the job.your best bet is to do internship or volunteer after u graduate atleast if a spot opens up u have a chance to get hired or it's stuff to throw on a resume

They don't expect anything other than what is required in the job description.
Step 1 - Read what the employer requires
Step 2 - Then customise your answers.
If an employer requires 13 years experience and university degree and you are in college then obviously it's unrealistic.

Antony Stagg Hi Antony, nice video. I agree with all you have said. But what would you do in Croatia , the worst country (in terms of employment and economy) in whole European Union. I am 26 and I have a masters degree in Economy. My CV is much richer with experience, skills and knowledges than many of my coleagues' but I don't have any "connection" so employers just blow me off every time. All of this discourages me and I am slowly loosing my faith that I will ever find a good job I deserve. What to do in a country so corrupt you can not even use a public toillet if you don't have "inner connections"??

To tell the truth at this stage I don't know the exact title, but I just want to feel comfortable and passionate about what I'm doing... I'm in the information technology field by the way

    • @martinkuliza
      @martinkuliza 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

Sajola sash HI MATE, i thought as much.
Please allow me to give you some very very friendly advice that most will not give you.
THIS WILL BE A VERY LONG POST.. OK
and before i do (so that you perhaps don't get offended.) let me say this.. i am a very upfront, no bullshit kinda person. ok, so i'm gonna talk straight.
take me literally and don't take anything personally.
      so. here you go,
first of all, I'm An Engineer of computing and Telecommunications, feel free to ask my advice if you wish.
      secondly... i thought so
you see the truth about you is this
and especially since your a woman.
      here's the thing
WHY YOU DON'T KNOW YOUR DREAM TITLE OR JOB? IS .... because
      1. Woman Primarily "Feel" they don't generally think
now. before you go getting all defensive. let me clarify
it's not to say woman are stupid,
all i'm saying is all humans have the ability to think and feel
some think more and feel less
and others feel more and think less
the way a man's mind works psychologically is, men think things through
      Woman Feel things through
      you see what i'm saying
now there are guys that Feel dominantly
and there are woman that can think well.
but i'm just saying, overall Men Dominantly think
      Woman Dominantly feel
which is why generally speaking, Men and woman don't completely understand each other and why married couples argue.
      ok, so.. moving on
being a woman, Your in love with the Idea of "A DREAM JOB"
it's the same concept for a woman as
      "FINDING THE PERFECT GUY"
      "HAVING THE PERFECT WEDDING"
the truth is Pefection doesn't exist, you simply need to work at it to get it to a point that you want it to be at
      to put it another way,
when my is bored, this is what she says to me
"Martin can we go somewhere and do something nice"
and i'll be like.. "Sure, what do you want to do ?"
and she'll be like "i don't know.. Just something nice"
see. the point is, i want to define where to take her,
without knowing the destination i can't take her there
but the problem is, she doesn't know it either.
she's just in love with the idea of ....
      "SOMETHING NICE"
it makes her feel fuzzy and warm,
so.. we now have to figure out where i can take her to be fuzzy and warm.. see the problem.
NOW.. YOU WILL NEVER ACHIEVE YOUR GOAL
      YOU KNOW WHY....
Because... YOU HAVE NOT DEFINED WHAT IT IS
so let's take your strengths and work on that.. ok
you said "I'm all about Self Improvement"
      that's awesome
      let's use that
now. In order to improve , understand this concept
If you don't know the mathematical problem
you can never find the answer or solution
      you can only guess,
maybe you might guess to say
      oh, it's 2
      or maybe it's 5
but then someone clarifies the math problem and says
      the problem is ...
      4 + 3
see, now you can find the solution
and if it's a more complex problem like
      3457X 2765 / 3 - 15
you can still solve it, but it just takes more time
      it might be HARD
      but .. so what
if you define it, it can be solved
      if you don't . it can't
      HARD IS BULLSHIT
      everything is hard
people need to get over it and just do it.
      so..
STEP 1. Take that feelling that you have about "THE DREAM JOB"
STEP 2. Think about what it means (this might be hard for you, because woman generally don't do that, they are just happy to be emersed in the feeling,
but the fact is, if you want to make it reality,
      you have to define it
STEP 3. Forget about the Job title.
      honestly, it's all bullshit
      let's take I.T.
let's say you go for a Help Desk Level 2 Position
and the title is Help Desk Engineer Tier 2
now let's say you also have another job that your looking at and the title is
      "SYSTEMS ENGINEER"
and in that role you have things like...
you need oracle experience, you need
server experience you need this and that and so on and so forth and a lot of big words that you have never heard before
      and my personal favourite
you need Break Fix experience hehe
      bullshit bullshit bullshit
or another favourite is when they ask you for
      "THE SKILLS MATRIX" hehe
bullshit bullshit bullshit wank wank wank.
      it's called a C.V. or a Resume
you can't put down your experience in a non Table form and call it a Matrix
By Definition, a Matrix is a Grid
Employment staff that use these words are a waste of your time, they clearly have no idea experience, they just know how to spit out bullshit words that make them appear more intelligent
the fact is that you could tell these people,
"I have experience in doing extensive ping tests and ICMP requests"
      see.. it sounds cool right.
but to anyone that understands this.
basically your telling them your a wanker and an idiot
and to hire you, the person would have to be a moron, because hiring your after saying something like this
would really mean, you haven't got a clue about I.T.
      beyond doing Ping Tests
which means when the shit hits the fan, your going to be wasting everyone's time that has relied on you.
but, this bullshit speak, has some value.
you see the purpose of the employment agency is to get past the stupid person in your way who hasn't got a clue about I.T.
so.. spin this bullshit to them and they will be impressed and they will tell the Employer
"this person really really really knows their shit" hehe
and then they will look stupid
but, make sure you do know your shit,
because at the end of the day, you will ultimately get interviewed by the I.T. Manager, and he isn't an idiot.
      but i digress..
      so..
the truth is, half of this crap is not even required and the second job , even though it's higher paid, will require around the same experience as the first one
and the person interviewing you will be some "Hiring manager"(Again .. Bullshit title to describe someone in a recruitment agency who basically hasn't got a fucking clue about networks)
and this person who hasn't got an idea
is the person you are putting effort into
      NO MATE.
they are a waste of time
they will make you wait up to 3 months or more to... MAYBE get a job
if you call up a job and you get an employment agency or recruitment centre
Just say "uh huh, uh huh, ok, thank you, pretend to take down the number, tell them you'll send the resume through, if they ask you to. (but don't really do it) and say ok, thanks , have a nice day"
or even better, Don't lie to them,
but when they say "Send through your C.V via email and we'll consider it"
      say this
"Actually, thank you for that, but my procedure is to initially speak to the hiring person and get a feel of what their expectations are of me and whether the position suits me and to give that person the chance to see if i suit their needs as well"
at this point, you'll get told
"yes, tha'ts what the interview is for and there is a long list of people"
      and your response should be
"I completely understand that, but, with respect, i'm not a time waster and i don't want to sit in a queue, i'm ready to work now and if i could get a call back organised today to have a 5 min chat that would be great, or now if possible, or even if we want to setup an appt today for another day to come in and have a talk that would also work,
but, if that doesn't suit your routine, then ..with all respect, thank your for your time"
Mate,... YOU HAVE 1 GOAL OK
      LAND THE FUCKING INTERVIEW
basically, avoid talking to these people
THEY ARE A WASTE OF YOUR TIME
Put pressure on them, but do it politely.
the fact that your a putting pressure on them
      TELLS THEM YOU ARE COMMITTED
you don't need a job interview to see this
      and when you tell someone
Call me today or i walk
      or
make an appt or i walk
      the boss interprets this as
if we have a major server outage
you are basically, that driven that YOU WILL FIX THE PROBLEM WITHOUT FUCKING AROUND
      that's the message your sending.
now.. if you say something like OK i'll send my resume through and wait in line
the boss see's you as ...
when we have a server outage this person will crack under pressure and conform to NORMAL rules of laziness
they won't go the extra mile
      that's the message you send
      YOU WANT TO STAND OUT
      NOT BLEND IN
YOU KNOW WHAT I USE THESE PEOPLE FOR.
When i'm training friends of friends how to get a job, i purposely call these places to teach people how to talk to ACTUAL EMPLOYERS
these guys are practice monkeys for me
they are hired by the actual employers so that the employers don't have to fuck around and waste time
even the employers have a low opinion of these agencies.
      so. avoid them
they are a waste of your time and money
MY ADVICE TO DEFINE WHAT YOU WANT
      go from broad to specific
      so...
      Broad.
do you want to work in I.T.
      ANSWER : i ASSUME.. YES
      good.
Do you want to specialise in Software or Hardware
      ANSWER THAT FOR ME OK
and then we'll go from there
now.. don't try to think of titles
TRY TO THINK OF WHAT YOU WANT TO DO , VERY VERY SIMPLY STATED
So.. do you want to help fix peoples computer
      or
Do you want to work in a company in a server room maintaining the companies servers
      or
do you want to help people in a company with their computer problems
      or
do you want to advise companies on how to fix their problems in their computer networks
      KEEP IT SIMPLE
      TITLES ARE BULLSHIT OK
a title simply means that , the fancier it sounds, the more you expect to get paid
and there is no such thing and as a fucking Helpdesk Engineer, tha'ts just bullshit
Engineer's do not sit behind a helpdesk and tell people to turn if off and on again or how to solve a printing issue in word
Engineer's are utilized on a higher level
      my advice to you,
if you think you can handle it
      TO BE SUCCESSFUL
      DEFINE "SUCCESS"
      START YOUR OWN BUSINESS
GET RID OF ALL LIABILITIES IN YOUR LIFE
      (This means, No Bills, ever,
avoid paying stuff month to month)
the month to month payment thing, is financial death for a person
sadly a lot of people don't know this
so.. how do you do this
      well. basically
      go prepaid where you can.
      and for things like Electricity.....
      Pay 1 year upfront.
and then every year pay another year upfront and so on.
that way you will never have monthly bills that reoccur
so.. your entire year will be bill free
now think what you can save if you never have bills.
it means you never get reminder letters
it means that if someone owes someone money,
THE ELECTRICITY COMPANY OWES YOU. not the other way around
don't play their rules, Play your own rules
Their rules are designed for them to make money and for you to be broke ok.
NEVER GET A MORTGAGE, IT'S THE STUPIDEST THING YOU CAN DO
a Mortgage is basically the ultimate way to get a person financially screwed
if you sign a contract, your fucked.
so.. if you want a house
      Pay for it in Cash
now, how do you do that
      ANSWER: Save
next answer.. but, easier said than done .. right.
well. yeah, but it can be done.
BUT, NOT IF YOUR WORKING FOR SOMEONE
this is what it takes to get 1 Million Dollars
      1. 1 Million Dollars can be achieved easily in 8 years, from $0 dollars
      now
      2. in 8 years we have 365 days x 8 years =
      2920 Days.. right
      so. $1,000,000 / 2920 Days = $342.47
let's call it $350 per day ok
so IF YOU SAVE $350 EVERY DAY
YOU WILL BE A MILLIONAIRE IN 8 YEARS.
realistically you can do it in 6 months to a year. but 8 is the statistical time frame.
so, now how do you now get $350 a day saved
      well.
if you apply for a job that pays you $20 per hour , for 40 hours a week, before tax
      it'll never happen
why.. because your boss wants to make the million and he will not allow you to make a million dollars a year
if your lucky, you'll make $200,000
and that's very very very very lucky
chances are if your just lucky
      you may get around $90,000
      but realistically, you'll be around $50 - 60 K
now, in your own business, it'll be min $80 per hour
but realistically more like $150 - $200 per hour
so let's go back to that $350 a day
and assume you work at $150 per hour
      which is quite reasonable
you only need to work 3 hours of the day to save that and the other 7 hours are your money
its seriously piss easy to earn $400 a day in a business
when i started my business 15 odd years ago.
4 months into it,i was doing around $900 - $1200 a day and then more and more.
as i'm writing this to you.. right now..
i have just received 2 computer to reformat
      $250 x 2 = $500
that will be done in around 2-3 hours
      see, easy
      now consider
is it easier for me to slave away at work for some boss who is an absolute arsehole and have all that stress FOR A FUCKING $500 pay cheque
or is it easier to reformat 2 computers while having a cup of coffee and relaxing for the most part ?
More pay, for less effort.. see how that works.
BUT YOU HAVE TO WORK FOR YOURSELF
now.. if you never work for yourself
you basically have to land a job
(now pay attention to how i say it, compared to how your saying it)
YOU HAVE TO LAND A JOB THAT WILL PAY YOU $80,000 OR MORE
YOU HAVE TO HAVE NO LIABILITES
      YOU HAVE TO SAVE
if you do that, you'll have an ok life
Even if you do the Mortgage thing, you will probably pay it off
now notice how i was very specific with the goals
      Like.. $80,000 a year
      0 Liabilities
      you can measure these things
you can't measure on a calculator or quantify the amount of "Dream Job"
if you say you have $20 in your pocket,
i know you need another $79,980 per year
      to get to $80,000
but if you have $20 right now
how much more do you need to achieve "DREAM JOB TOTAL"
      see the problem...
so.. therefore it's impossible to achieve.
but the secret to the Mortgate thing, is..
don't get a mortgage based on 2 incomes.
if you do, you'll probably go bankrupt
but back to the original point
UNTIL YOU DEFINE "YOUR DREAM JOB"
UNTIL YOU DEFINE "WHAT MAKES YOU FEEL COMFORTABLE AND PASSIONATE"
YOU WILL NEVER GET WHAT YOU WANT
      WHEN YOU DEFINE IT.
YOU WILL BE FUCKING DRIVEN LIKE NO-ONE'S BUSINESS
      and you will succeed.
so.. answer the question for me
Do you want to work in hardware or software ?
i know this has been a long post
i hope it has helped you
Trust me, i can put you on the right path to success.
but you have to know how to define SUCCESS.
      be cool

I had my first interview yesterday, so on Sun. I spent time to watch almost all of Antony's interview Q&A videos and they worked magic! The interviewing panel asked me most of the Qs in Antony's videos: tell us about yourself, your strengths, achievements, your challenges, etc. Antony's EES, FAB, CAR did the trick. They guided me in answering the Qs satisfactorily. In my opinion, the interview went well. The panel was impressed about my confidence and asked me to keep it up. Thank you Antony for these insightful tutorials.

Excellent advice; I've been approaching this question wrong for years! It really gives a laser focus for this question, and allows you to be proactive and go down a company's list of core values and illustrate how you fit in with those values, instead of focusing on unimportant fluff and stuff, while you're hoping for a question about their values later in the interview, or worse, wondering how to bring it up without sounding like a total suck up.

I used all that I learned here to so impress my interviewers that I was later made a job offer which I never accepted because the pay was not great. My second interview elsewhere produced the same result. During the interview, I could see through the body language of my interviewers that they were highly impressed by my performance. I got the job within days. Thanks you so much Anthony Stagg for posting this video and the other series. You are God sent.

    • @ajp4860

Talk about your values, beliefs, goals, just what kind of person you are. That's what is ultimately more important, and that's what they are looking for with this question. I don't agree with this video at all. There are much better videos out there. The question isn't "Tell me your academic history, your grades, jobs, etc.". . . the question is "Tell me about yourself"

    • @manicbassa
      @manicbassa 7 ปีที่แล้ว

He is giving examples of someone who just graduated. He details his college work and his work experience. Its what he needs to say. What were you expecting? That he keeps fit, likes music, plays chess? Thats not what hiring managers want to hear. They dont care about tat stuff. They want to hear how his skills and experience fit into the company. Read some more and stop talking rubbish!

What I don't understand about interviews is, they'll ask you something like this, you'll then answer with this, then they could just go and ask you again what are your skills, or why do you think you are right for this role or something, Your basically going to be repeating yourself and giving them the same bloody answer.

OK. Let's break it down. 'Tell me about yourself?' is asking for you to explain, though examples why you're suitable for the job, based on the requirements given in the job advertisement.
When asked about your key skills and qualities(attributes/character traits), this is an opportunity to SUPPORT your answer to 'Tell me about yourself?'. You will mention those you have previously cited, but in addition to this you are likely to present additional skills and qualities that they may/may not have asked for. This becomes your USP (Unique Selling Point) which could set you ahead of the other candidates.
Hope this helps, I'm an Employability Skills Tutor

I would like to share my answer in this question "TELL ME ABOUT YOURSELF".
As a pointer I was a former SALE STAFF (Promodiser) & a CASHIER.
Well, I am an associate graduate of Computer Technology course. 3 months after I graduate I got my very first job as a Sale Staff/Cashier in a souvenir shop. At first I was nervous about having that job, but later on the nervous I felt turns into expanding my Communicating Skill & my knowledge in operating mechanism, because you know as a Sale Staff you need to entertain & talk to people to get a sale and as a Cashier you need to use & operate a POS machine.
What do you think about my answer Mr Antony Stagg?
    Any suggestion?!

this has help me a great much. i went on an interview today, and although when asked about myself, i usually talk about my experience and skills, this time , i was unexpectedly told not to recite from my resume. the recruiter wanted to know about me, what makes me ME. and she had me stumped. after the interview i immediately got online and found this video. as close as i thought i was to EES, i wasn't completely accurate. i am sure i did not get the position but being aware of my displacements, when i receive the refusal, i will thank her for reinforcing my skills in communication and staying with strickly EES. thank you so much for making this video.

What if the interviewer has no formal education and is offended by a college degree or any achievement you may have such as the deans list, student government, any certifications held, etc? Trust me, I'm not applying for a top level job right out of school, the employers treat college graduates like crap.

People complaining about this video. THIS IS AN IDEA on how you can convey your current experience and re-word it while keeping EES. The point he's trying to make is take advantage of the situation by showing professionalism and composure, moreover show commitment and hunger, any employer will be blow away if you can sum up things easily. You don't have to say exactly what the video says, be your self, use EES and make it in your own style, practice in front of a mirror and focus! good luck!

Depending on the job your level of education or even experience might not matter. A hiring manager wants to get a feel of who you are and whether or not you are going to help elevate their team. This comes back to communication skills. They are priceless. If you are not confident in your communication skills look for opportunities to practice. Get as many interviews as you can. Look people in the eye, answer questions directly and honestly, smile, be patient with yourself and others. A job today is a blessing and the first thing that will hurt your chances are a sense of entitlement and being overly critical of others. Stay humble, keep learning.

Hello Anthony. I don't know if you'll ever read this but I wanted to thank you for these videos. I used them to get ready for a big interview I had a week ago and although I got super nervous and I didn't say all the things I had prepared, I kept FAB, CAR and EES in my head and they helped me being successful. I got the job and it was the only interview I had to attend :-) thanks thanks thanks.

This is really helpful for an interviewee. Normally you will think it is a starting question which it is not so important, maybe just for warming up, but in fact from this question, the interviewer will collect the important point of your understanding of the position and your communication skills already. The main point which I have gained from this video is EES, this is the very good instruction for interviewees. Thanks a lot for making this video.

Although you make good points, it seems like many of these tutorials only really apply to people with ideal qualifications and experience, as well as ideal strengths for the role they are applying for. I think this is rather unrealistic, and doesn't really apply to most people or roles. We can't all have 2:1 degrees and 3 years of experience and all the rest!!

Mention (just blah blah.. ) something about your management/ leader skills. Tell you were an awesome coordinator. Else be get into a basic but good job and make a good profile. Jump the company in 2yr or so.

    • @ajufsd
      @ajufsd 9 ปีที่แล้ว

Its just a trick candidates follow. Read that in a positive mind. If you make a good job profile in 2yrs (not necessary in salary wise and no need that your 1st company must be an awesome one since you said you don't have that career achievements to try that), you can try for a job change into a your dream company. Good companies mostly won't look into what you get now, butt into what you are and what you can. Else, after 2yrs if you find continuing in 1st company is better, just go on.

MishuTaste Sir, first of all, I'm all, mostly speechless for a while for what you've said, that I can only say thank you so so so much. I'm already working sir, I just started last tuesday, my work for now is just simple (mostly clerical), but I've got many to do. I can say that right now I'm beginning to feel happy with the work I got, I believe that I have been working hard and have been consistently humble and punctual. Yes I do have a desire to improve my life, but not that strong enough honestly. I noticed that, I am kind of passive in my work environment, but I'm really doing my work fine I believe, except for my shyness from my co-workers, but I am keeping myself as humble as possible. Right now sir, my goal is to give my mother her most desired automatic washing machine. I truly don't know and not sure as of yet on what I truly desire for now. But I am looking forward in helping my mother with the expenses and that washing machine. Can I have your opinion on this sir? Thanks a lot and Godbless sir. :D

I don't know much of anything, so I could be wrong here, but if I were a hiring manager and someone said something like this I would be hugely turned off. You're so obviously full of shit and exaggerating your past experience / skills. I would always prefer the person who's honesty and genuine over someone who's just lying to my face and making it seem like they're the greatest person in the world.

What you just wrote here is actually what a person should see in a potential spouse to choose him or her as one.....but in this context...you should as an interviewer of company X should be looking for the exact qualities in a candidate that make him deserving to get that particular job in company X. You as an interviewer should not be looking for what you like in a person but should be looking from a company's perspective as to what is best for the company's own welfare. This means that even if you dislike the so called bragging of a certain interviewee.....if he meets all the requirements and skills needed for the designated job...YOU SHOULD HIRE HIM!!!! THIS AIN't ABOUT YOU....IT'S ABOUT THE COMPANY YOU WORK FOR!!!(By the way, stating your achievements and talents doesn't amount to an exaggeration.....but if you change your body language and your tone of speech a bit, it may sound as if the interviewer is boasting and that may be a severe downside.)

If the interviewer wants to know about my education, employment and skills why the heck doesn't he just ask that? Is it because he's possibly a typical HR numbskull whose asking questions he got out of a uni textbook without pondering whether it's actually useful or not?

  • @kokab
    @kokab 10 ปีที่แล้ว

Thank you for the great advice. I agree that the answer to this question should be relevant to the job you are applying for. Preparation is key. Study the job description well and rehearse what you will say in the interview to show the employer that your experience, education, and skills match those required for the job.

I have been looking for a new opportunity for a living a long time and went for several interviews but I did not get the job that I want.
I think that there must be something wrong with my CV or interview techniques and I just Google for job interviews and I found job interview tutorials very useful and practical in comparison with other job interview tips that I found on the internet.
To me, job interviews by Antony Stagg are very professional in the ways they are presented and very easy to understand to non native speakers. It helps me to recognize what I have done in my previous interviews are completely not organized and well done in order to get the jobs that I want. If I were in the position of providing tutorial for job interview techniques, I would like to use Antony Stagg's tutorial as my references sources.
I currently do not have any job interviews but I know where to fix my mistakes and well prepare for future job interviews and hopefully I will get a job that I want very soon.
I would like to express my sincere thanks to Antony Stagg for his professional knowledge to this particular field. Many thanks.
