    You are probably way ahead of me, but I'll comment just in case: the pigs need more electric-free area and/or a larger paddock. They can barely turn around without getting shocked. I've seen setups where the training fence was just a small portion of the interior of the paddock fence, so they do get contact and learn to avoid the fence. Predator protection can be strung outside the paddock as needed.

    probably their training would be better in a rectangular space instead of square. When animals run, they throw themselves into the next wall because there is not space for then to run and stop to understand what is happening. Which is making them constantly get shocked. Be careful not to train them to be helpless about getting zapped and build them to be too panicky because they just can't understand what is zapping them and what to do to avoid it.

    Just a tip on the fence training, for next time. You don't need to string the whole fence with the wire in the begining, if the fence is secure on its own. I believe it was Al from Lumnah Acres that trained his to the electric fence by putting it up on one side of the pen. Just makes it easier for them to figure out quickly. Then you can add it around. That way they aren't bouncing off one side into the other and getting zapped without knowing why.

  • @drescherjm
    @drescherjm ปีที่แล้ว +93

    My initial reaction is the pen is too small for the fence training because when they accidently come in contact their startled reaction causes them to run into some other part of the fence causing more havoc. However I am definitely not a farmer.

    A case that Dr. Pol showed on air was a few pigs getting sunburned and overheated. With having the pink pigs they will sunburn easy. If the sun is out no matter the temperature, they can get burnt. Just make sure you have a place for them to get cover from the sun. So happy that you are getting these cute pigs. I can’t wait to see how the ducks and geese will react.

  • @TranShar
    @TranShar ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Saw some of the concern regarding the temporary pen size. I have to agree. From the bit we saw, they run away from the shock but immediately touch another wire so get shocked again. They don't appear to have space to get away from the wire and figure out what happened.
    Pigs are very smart, smarter than some dogs. They need to be trained more like dogs than cows.
    My second concern is them going a bit feral. Pigs can get VERY big and being so smart go feral very easily. Might have a hard time rounding them up for processing in the end.
    Naming them makes sense, you name the cows that are going to be processed, so of course you would name the pigs too.
    Good luck with them 😊

    I've seen other farmers have success with fence training pigs by locking them up in their little hutch for like a day or overnight. When they're let out, they venture out slowly and eventually encounter the fence, so they understand its a bad thing. Your setup has them leaning on the fence feeling safe while you're walking to turn it on, then when you turn on the power the safe space is suddenly bad and they have a harder time understanding what's causing the hurt when they were fine a second ago.

  • @karimonster
    @karimonster ปีที่แล้ว +5

    They'll need more room to train to the fence. They don't have anywhere to run away without either running into more fence or nailing what you have set up in the center. I know its temporary, but...I would make the space bigger to properly train them to fence. With as much space as the water bucket, the house, and the food bowls take up in the very middle of the 16x16, I would go at least twice as big because there's barely room for one of them to move past the items in the middle without hitting the fence, much less two or even all three. They need more clearance or you're not gonna get them trained at all :)

    • @Nemrai

Their shelter, water ,food plus the foot taken off each side made your space per pig considerably smaller. The pigs look like they have a three foot wide path around their food and shelter to move. I am pretty sure that you have probably opened up their space by the time you posted this so consider the actual amount of space you give the pigs next year if you get more pigs.

    The homestead pigfeeders we used 40 years ago were hot water heater tanks, cut long-wise to make two 'canoes'.Then we had a short piece of angle iron (1 1/2-2' long) welded on to one end, at the bottom, which kept the tanks from rolling. After about 20 years, the spots in the bottom of the trough where the 'anti-roll device' was welded on rusted through. After 20 years as pig feeder and waterer, manufactured from a used up water heater, and the anti-roll-device we used was half a bent beyong use t post. So one fence pole and one water tank made 2 vessels. We definitely got our money's worth out of that project.

Two things I’d like to comment on: after seeing the slow burn of the dead grass, I was wondering how prescribed burning might be beneficial for the pasture or farm overall. I know fire is a necessary component of many southern US ecosystems, but I’m not too sure about the role of fire up in the Northeast. Secondly, if you haven’t already, I’d advise freezing all of the rodents the cats kill for a couple days at minimum before thawing them and feeding them to the pigs, to remove as many potential parasites as possible.

    Morgan, you really need to make it bigger if you’re going to use electric fence or otherwise, they’re not understanding it’s the fence at all that’s hurting them. They’ll eventually get to the point where they will hardly even leave the middle because they’re too scared.
    Electric fence only works well if they have a bigger area to move around in. It’s the same principle is training, a dog to a yard fence. If it’s a small area, the dog gets shocked too quickly any time they walk around at all and then they’re afraid to even leave the porch.

    • @barbaradeitz1853
      @barbaradeitz1853 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I felt that too. Seems logical. And I know you don't want any to cause the animals more pain than necessary.

    • @ponygirl5716
      @ponygirl5716 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@barbaradeitz1853 I do think this was a huge error in planning. And I’m usually very tolerant of Morgan’s newness to all of this, but this was painful to watch. I could not watch the videos after the pigs were getting repeatedly shocked, and they had no clue what was going on. Seems like every time they jumped in one direction they were getting shocked.
      Morgan, if you are reading this, after first of all pretty much at least doubling the size of your pen, change your fence so that the electric wire is closer to your panels. You should be able to put your posts close to your panels or use T post insulators and then hook up the type of insulators that stick out just a few inches. You don’t want such a big gap in there so that the pigs can actually go in between the electric wire, and the panel. That’s a big problem with your design.
      I know you don’t mean to be harmful to your pigs, but this really has to be fixed-pronto. It’s a very poor set up and hurting and confusing your little pigs.

  • @cindyn7512
    @cindyn7512 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Morgan: B/C your pen was very small they hit the electric fence, got a painful jolt, panicked, then ping-ponged around the entire pen hitting it again and again. Since you have a solid panel fence to contain them, if you had only set a double hot wire along one side of the fence it would have been an easier learning experience for them. Once they connect wire = shock in their brain (probably less than a day) you could wire the rest of the pen all the way around and it would save them a bunch of shocks and you a little work.
    Be prepared..... they are charmingly smart. Many learn to 'snuffle' dirt onto the lower wire and ground out the fence.... when they hear it stop 'ticking' they walk on through and go on walk about. Call them each time you feed them so they will come right back to you if (when?) they make a jail break.
    BTW, that is a very nice set of pigs your farmer-friend sold you. You should do well with them.

    problem that might arise from this small enclosure(beside being too small in the first place with too much hot wire everywhere they turn) is the manure. Pigs are rather tidy when it comes to that and will use a dedicated area aka they dont shit where they eat (or sleep)

    I love all your videos and this is the first video where the approach appears to be cruel. The piglets have undergone so many changes in one day. The electric fence training area is too small and/or not configured well. Perhaps putting wires on two sides for a couple of days, until they start to associate the wires with the pain would help alleviate the small area they are in. I feel so badly watching them scream and feeling their fear... especially when I know they could learn the lesson in an easier, more logical manner with a little bit of patience.

Also I remember the stink from their 💩 is awful. Every time the wind blew it was awful. Neighbors down the road could smell it. Good bye to fresh country air. Good luck.

    I can't even watch this. That is NOT enough room to have an electric fence surrounding them. I used to raise pigs. I covered my eyes when you turned the electric on. I knew they would panic and run right over to the other side. You should have put it outside the fence so they would touch it when they poked their nose through. I wouldn't give them moldy food either, just take a second and cut the mold off. This was a little upsetting for me.

    this is a little disappointing. as a former pig farmer, it'd be nice to see these have a larger temporary area to acclimate with outgoing through the trauma of being zapped every second because of the space issue. but also as a former pig farmer, I understand just as much as anyone that bringing any new animal onto the farm is a learning process. hopefully they are out of there sooner than later and are given some true space and comfort.
