I met John in Brent shopping centre I was with my wife who’s although a British citizen she was not born here I grew up watching John and he became a inspiration for me to start boxing at an early age
John was an absolute gentleman he was with his wife at the time but had no problem spending time with us allowed us to take photos my wife was blown away I was to and still am today the memories of the day will be forever he was a lovely kind gentleman who gave me his time and I’ve got a beautiful picture of me and John squaring up to each other with him planting an imaginary right hand on my jaw

A lovely craftsman of the noble art. We had so many truly great fighters in those days. Ken buccanan, Pat cowdell, Alan minter, Tony Sibson, Johnny stracey, Maurice Hope.

One of the best technical boxers of the 70s. Regardless of weight class. John Conteh did more correct things in one round than many fighters do in 5 fights combined.

I was training up the 'Thomas a becket' in Old Kent Road when Chris finnegan was in training to fight John conteh. I was only 14 at the time and Chris asked me how I thought he would get on against conteh. In my naivety I told him the truth, that conteh would eat him.
