I didnt even know that he had a Latvian roots. High five from Estonia. We have a farm couple of kilometers from Latvian border, where my grandpa and grandma lived even before the war, so im really glad to hear, that you have latvian roots.
that was cool. I can't believe he was able to find all that out. I know the feeling, I used to try to ask my grandfather what he did in the war/Army (US Army 1940-1978) and he'd never tell me. Turns out he lied about his age, enlisted at 16 and went to the Pacific as a motorcycle mechanic spending most of his time in New Guinea. After the war he stayed in and ended up getting a battlefield commission at one point (no clue when) and went to Korea as a tank commander in charge of a M39 Armored Utility Vehicle in the 2nd Infantry Division. During the Battle of the Bowling Alley he was pretty much the only officer alive (a 1st Lieutenant at that point) in the division and HAD to take command of everyone below him for a number of weeks while there was continued shelling and he did so well at it and it was considered 'going above and beyond the call of duty' that he was awarded a Bronze Star. He ended the war as a Captain. After the war he was told either get out of the Army, or give up your commission. So he went back to being a Sgt and was shipped off to the Territory of Alaska. At that point he just became an accountant and that's what he did for the rest of his military career. Unfortunately I never found any of this out until over 10 years after he died when my step-grandma sent us a package with his 2nd Infantry (Second to None) book, officers role call picture, and a bunch of medals. The last and most detailed of details I only found out last year, 17 years after his death, when my step grandma's daughter sent us a bunch more paperwork that said why and when he got his Bronze Star as well as his enlistment papers etc. I still have no clue when or why he got a commission as an officer.. It had to be a battlefield commission for taking lead when officers died during combat as a NCO, but I have no clue when. (As a high school dropout he'd never have become an officer through schooling which even then took college degrees) I also only recently found out where my family came from and where my last name came from.. Turns out we are part French (damn it... I hate French) and my first ancestor came to the US in 1685. His first child was born here in 1700.
My fathers Estonian a few years ago we went to Latvia on the way to Estonia. Felt at home in oth countries, even though I was born in Canada now reside in Australia. Really really enjoyed thanks Guy Martin
This was completely absorbing, and I learned a lot about the history of the area. Fascinating stuff. Guy is such a wonderful example of a human being, always learning, always curious, always humble, always strong. Love this series.

I was telling a friend about it and he said something like 'I heard the Latvian's were very independent and loved their farms/gardens'...and I just about went to tears. I didn't know the Russians and Germans ran back and over this country so much. What a beautiful country! And war accomplishes....what?
I can tell you as a Latvian This war has destroyed many thing. Where I live there was near my city a large village in it lived about 3 000 people but when the Russians came before the Germans came about 1 700 people lived and after ww2 only 200 people lived there and now there are 260 people in that village from 3 000 to 260. sorry if my english is bad.
And history just tells the story of the "winner" even if there no winner at all ... all the poor souls who did and saw things they never shouldnt. Latvia rlly awesome and still strongest People in my opinion . May all the poor souls Rest in Peace

His family history explains a lot of his fearless acts in life. He’s from a warrior side and expresses it differently than the past but it shows now with how fearless he is to undergo almost anything

I guess the quiet and preference to work ('graft') trait his grandfather has clearly passed onto Guy. Not uncommon to hear the hard working ethos that post-war migration brought not only to England but many countries world wide. I could say something about today's migration but that would be against the spirit of this documentary. Well done Guy. oh yeah Guy looks a lot like his Grandfather.
Ha, yesterday watched his series about building a spitfire, today he's building a bench in my country of Latvia. I had a weird feeling he could have some Latvian in him, the minute I heard his voice. Cheers.

I have the same problem with my great grand dad.... I have family in Poland, who where originally from german that I do not know and he was and his the elephant in the room. No one like to talk about him. He faught in the ww1 for the germans and when Hitler came to power he took his family to Switzerland. Lost everything and is a big taboo!

@@at9370 Well there were evil nazis, to deny that is to put your head in the sand, however not every single nazi acted in an evil manner, and were just following orders; this video is a perfect example of that, and there's the fact the Latvians had the motivation to defend their country from the soviets which were considered a bigger threat to Latvians. Any nazi that commited war crimes were hung in Nuremberg, or hunted down by nazi hunters, any that served in the German army that didn't were free to start new lives after the war, so it's unlikely any surviving soldiers of the nazis committed any evil crimes of war.
