  • Leopard tanks will be able to change the front line in Ukraine and force the Russians to retreat.
    Ukraine will be able to regain its lost lands.
    The Leopard 2 is a main battle tank that was developed by the German company Krauss-Maffei Wegmann in the late 1970s. It is considered to be one of the most advanced tanks in the world, with excellent mobility, firepower, and protection.
    Here are some key features of the Leopard 2 tank:
    Armor: The Leopard 2 features advanced armor protection that provides excellent defense against a variety of threats, including artillery shells, missiles, and small arms fire. The armor is made from composite materials, including high-strength steel and ceramic inserts.
    Firepower: The Leopard 2 is equipped with a powerful 120mm smoothbore gun that can fire a range of ammunition, including high-explosive, armor-piercing, and anti-tank rounds. The tank also features a coaxial machine gun and a secondary 7.62mm machine gun for defense against infantry.
    Mobility: The Leopard 2 is highly mobile and can reach speeds of up to 68 km/h (42 mph) on paved roads. It is powered by a 1,500 horsepower diesel engine and features a sophisticated suspension system that allows it to travel over rough terrain and obstacles.
    Crew: The Leopard 2 is typically crewed by four people, including a driver, gunner, loader, and commander. The tank features advanced electronics and communications systems that allow the crew to communicate and coordinate their actions effectively.
    The Leopard 2 is a powerful offensive weapon that can engage and destroy enemy tanks, armored vehicles, and fortifications.

    One mistake that is repeated comparing Leopards and Abrams in regards to fuel is the type, it does not matter the Abrams runs on any fuel aswell.
    The actual point that matters is consumption. The Abrams needs even in idle around 3 times more fuel. The cost of fuel does not even matter, its the supply.
    If you have to drive 3 times more fuel trucks to the tanks it makes a big difference. The US Army can affort having an extensive logistics, an army like the ukrainian could get in serious trouble if supply routes are endagered, since it does not even have a considerable air force to cover for it.

    The Abrams runs on JP8 which is a diesel like fuel. There is a huge reason for doing this. All of the US mechanized vehicles - planes, tanks, boats, humvees and so on all run on a single common fuel. This makes logistics much simpler.

    • @hddun
      @hddun ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You are right. I was in the 2nd Armored division -- M-1 tanks, trucks, APC's etc all ran on what we generically called diesel and we referred to our vehicles as "multifueled". Our Army Marines Navy Air Forces won WW2 because the USA could supply fuel needed to the 1.5 million trucks and 150,000 armored vehicles in Europe and in Pacific. In fact our aviation gas allowed the P-51 / P-47 to go about 50 mph faster than German BF109 fighters -- not much but was the edge needed to kill them.

    • @hddun
      @hddun ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great point well taken and very accurate. When an modern army is dispersed over the world, they have to use the fuel available. Also, it was a key factor in our HUMMVEES which had a standard GM Duramax 6.7 Liter diesel engine. There are 100 of those engines in every thing trucks, cars, pickups, boats so if the grunts lost a intake valve, you could get one at local shops in any country.

    Russia is using the same "cannon fodder" strategy as in WWII. The difference is that back then, the men were defending their home land. The Russians pushed back the Germans because of that fact and the brutal Russian winter.
    Now, they are on the offensive with little motivation to kill Ukrainians. They just want to survive and get back home.

      @schneisim ปีที่แล้ว +2

      True, but when Tanks are refuled in action this happens on the main source every other equipment in the field will take. So also the Abrams was fueld with Diesel, as this is what will be on hand for every other equipment. In the meantime it takes JP-8, So logistically there now are special fuel supply just for the tank. Having the need to fuel whatever is availbale means this tank will be separated from the main troops or if only jet fuel is available other unit will fall back/left behind again. The advantage is not that cunning on the battlefield. This multifuel availability is "bought" with a thirsty enginge which is less reliable than other old school diesel engines.

    Man, unfortunately number are not looking so good for us Ukrainians as you said. According to US defense Secretary Austin up to now only 150 Leopard tanks in total are committed to be delivered to Ukraine, with some of them arriving closer to the summer. 31 Abrams tanks will probably arrive closer to the end of this year. So basically now less than 150 Leopard 2 tanks, 28 Challengers and 60 modernized Soviet era tanks from Poland available for the counterattack. In total this is less than 238 tanks out of 500-600 that general Zaluzhnyi has asked for a successful counterattack. Regarding, troops the number is also much smaller. Our experts claim that now around 60,000 soldiers are being prepared for the counteroffensive.
    That is why recent article from Washington Post "Ukraine short of skilled troops and munitions as losses, pessimism grow" claims that even Ukrainian officials have doubts that there will be a big counteroffensive. Simply with current state of matters we do not have enough military equipment for a big assault, may be for some local attacks. Having said that, we still do believe in victory, but without much bigger help from our western allies the war will continue for years and will cost hundreds of thousands of Ukrainian soldiers lives.

How about the narration saying that the Leopard and M-1a1 were tanks which in coming battles wouldn't go tank on tank with T-72, T-80, T90 and the other Russian tanks -- 2nd Armored has this -- M1-a1, APC's, and Bradley's -- I want to tell you this about our optical systems and night vision. Ours were so good that we could spot a T-72 or others over 5 miles before they knew we were in the neighborhood. It didn't matter because they never knew -- we had killed them by the hundreds. Our optics are so good we can tell you if an enemy soldier is dead or alive. Putin doesn't know any of this because he was a low ranking Political KGB hack NOT a military man. He has killed anyone who would know this information about US, UK, DGR and so now he sits behind that big desk thinking he is winning....give Ukraine long range weapons and let him find out which country can put a helocopter on Mars and can put one on his big desk if we want...

However, it is possible that precision weapons may change what has been historically, a bad bet.

    The big advantage of Leopard 2 over the Chally and M1A is the amount and location of spares available. These things require a fair amount of maintenance. The advantage of modern tanks are the thermal sights. So are they getting the sights? I know for the M2 they are getting older versions.
    But none of the tanks on offer will be any good if not used properly. The crews have to be up to the task.
    US tank gunnery doctrine puts reduced exposure time over hitting the enemy. If you’re dead you can’t hit anyone. So while everyone talks about increased armour protection over soviet tanks, Western tanks are not invulnerable and doctrine reflects that. Especially the L2 with its weaker side armour. Not a big problem if the tanks are used correctly.
    Western tank doctrine is different to soviet doctrine. We will have to see if how well the Ukrainian crews and commanders learn their lessons during training with the tanks , and hope these assets aren’t wasted.

      Yeah, that will help a lot. They will only have to be transported back to Poland, around 1000 kms west from the front, to be repaired and then transported the same distance back to the front. That sounds extremely efficient. Now you know why the RF keeps the battle as close as possible to their country. As Scott Ritter says, this is not about reclaiming land, it's a war of attrition. Napoleon rode to Moscow with 1.5 million people, including civilian servants and such. He returned to Paris with 47 thousand of the strongest and most lucky of them.
      Montgomery wrote: "Rule 1, on page I of the book of war, is: "Do not march on Moscow". Various people have tried it, Napoleon and Hitler, and it is no good. That is the first rule. I do not know whether your Lordships will know Rule 2 of war. It is: "Do not go fighting with your land armies in China". It is a vast country, with no clearly defined objectives..."
