What the Online ABSN Program is Like

For many students, the online portion of Averett’s Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing (ABSN) Program has several benefits. But how does an online ABSN program work, and what does that look like in practice? ABSN students Aliyah and Lindsey explain all.
Flexibility is a core feature of an online nursing program such as Averett’s ABSN.
“Being online and sometimes in person when we come in for our skills lab and our exams does give you that flexibility with your schedule and day-to-day life,” Aliyah says. “You can have a great work-life and social-life balance with school; you just have to really manage your time and prioritize your nursing first.”
Lindsey uses her online nursing school time creatively: “You can work at home; I like to go with friends and work at a coffee shop.”
Because the ABSN program is on a shorter timeline, prerequisites are necessary before being admitted. However, online classes make this much more straightforward. Lindsey could still select the start date that worked best for her since she took these prerequisites online.
“I still had to do a couple of prerequisites. Averett made that easy because they were all online classes,” she says.
Because nursing is a hands-on career, there are still hands-on components to the ABSN program, such as skills and simulation labs and clinical rotations. These are completed on-campus and at nearby medical facilities or hospitals. This also has the added benefit of providing socialization with peers and hands-on application of what you learn in your didactic online classes.
Connecting with peers is integral to your nursing experience and is still possible with the online modality.
“We try to come together in different group chats and send out emails to communicate, keep each other encouraged, and help each other,” Aliyah says.
