dodgers apparently weren't as concerned about the surgery on ohtan's elbow because the doctor who actually performed it is the official dodger's team surgeon. they apparently vetted the surgeon and his opinion whether he can come back at full strength in terms of pitching.
Deferral could mean it extends to past his retirement as well. With inflation that means it's less NPV. But Ohtani makes more than $40 million a year in endorsements. His idea to defer the majority of his contract seems to speak to his want to be on a winning team. - WW
As a frequenter of Giants games, I was really hoping to have Pocari Sweat at Oracle Park. But why would Ohtani want to go from the Angels to essentially the Angels minus Trout
Because Shohei has no integrity and is manipulative: Lie #1) Said he didn't want to play for a big market. Now he's on the biggest market. Just flat out lied. Lie #2) Said he wouldn't sign with a team that leaked meetings. Roberts brazenly leaked their meeting. Shoehei lied. I don't hate Shoehei at all but the man is a demonstrable liar. Nothing he says about his judgment can be trusted. False humility time is OVER he's a sellout like everyone else.
There were rumors about him signing with the Dodgers months ago. He likes L.A. and didnt want to move, and just switching from Orange County to LA county means he can keep the home he currently owns.
I think this being “good for baseball” is very, very much yet to be determined. He’s guaranteed to make more than some owners are worth. There’s a whole lot of scenarios where that isn’t good for baseball
It's shite for baseball. The NBA just restructured the way teams can spend because it almost killed their sport as well. MLB is doomed now and if they don't control their own sport it will just topple over from overpaid common players.
After this I’m not watching baseball anymore. Why would I want to watch the same 4 teams sign everyone and make the playoffs every year. It’s a joke league now.
Doesn't work though. 10-12 teams spend big every year. Injuries and whatnot eliminate most of them every single year. Gotta spend to win in mlb usually. They share revenue. They can afford to at least try to spend a year every 5(frugal teams)

I can't wait!! I'm expecting the Dodgers to have "most wins in a season", like maybe 145 out of 162 games and series. The record is 116 (1906-cubs and 2001-mariners).
I wonder how much Ohtani’s ‘unprecedented deferred’ amount changes front office strategy ? For a player on their first / pre-arb contracts, probably not. They want that cash now and understandably so. But in that 28-32 age range, it could see a totally new strategy….. even if only for a handful of teams or a handful of players (both of whom want to be there deep into October). How much upper-tier payroll could they unlock now by pushing more money down the road ? It almost becomes a new tier of perceived salary cap all by itself 😳
100% this was a business decision first and foremost. Ticket sales, merch, Japan tv rights etc. Dodgers will make that money back eventually. I mean, just go to Dodger stadium, they're still selling Valenzuela jersey's about 30 years after his retirement and they still sell very well. This signing was much more than just baseball.
Remember when Beckham was giving a portion of a league and a team, and when messi turned down over 1 billion. This is huge, until the saudis buy a team
People often say it's an overpayment, but when you consider all the off-the-field revenue, it's like you're paying for the support of an entire country like Japan, if not all of Asia. It's not just fans in Japan; he's an Asian athlete at the pinnacle of a major American sport, which is unprecedented. So, it's more than just Japan; he's the most marketable Asian athlete in the history of sports. He's worth more than any American athlete because of his international appeal.
Japan doesnt count as "international appeal". 99% of people around the world never heared of him. In Africa its exactly 100%. Even Noah Lyles is more famous around the world, as an Olympic trackie that is... 700 mio are impossible to make in 10 years. Before taxes that means aprox 1.5 billion in revenue from game shirts. Dodgers have no endorsement rights in Japan...
@@FoxxyBrown1111you have no idea what you’re talking about lmao, Japan has one of the biggest economies in the world, and like the commenter said, it’s a big part of Asia we’re talking about and not just Japan. I’m sorry but no one cares about Africa, African countries don’t watch much baseball anyways, and lets be real, there’s not much $ to be made from consumers there. When has a single business ever said, “oh you know guys, we really need to penetrate the African market” 😂 None, cuz there’s almost nothing to be made there compared to other continents (well maybe charities to solicit donations lol). Saying Noah Lyles is more famous is crazy lol. Even if he is right now (which he isn’t), Lyles plays a sport that is only relevant every four years. shohei is going to be playing basically multiple times a week, for one of the biggest teams in the league. You’re making a huge error in evaluating his level of stardom RIGHT NOW instead of his POTENTIAL fame. He is the current face of baseball despite being on a small market team that never made the playoffs, and plus Ohtani really only became a household name for the past 3 seasons now. You put him on a team like the Dodgers, he makes and wins some World Series, and you’ll see how wrong you are.
Ok, I bite Mr LMAO. 1) Again, Japan doesnt count as INTERNATIONAL appeal. Its ONE country. Again the news for you: The Dodgers gain zero, yes zero coins of any business Ohtani does there (mostly endorsment deals). They certainly sell many overpriced Made-in-China game shirts there as in the USA, but after about two years the market will be mature. On a ten year scale its a negative balance (700 mio vs the short term profitable shirts business). I only brought up Africa to underline the "international" argument as plain crap. No more, no less. I give you Europe: Same same, no one cares, no one knows Ohtani. 2) Yes Lyles is more famous. Other than in the USA, track is pretty popular around the world. Especially in JAPAN. Not only Olympics, but worlds and track meets too. 3) Everybody in the USA or Japan knows Ohtani by now. To play for the Dodgers doesnt change a thing. Its completely uncertain if the Dodgers win a WS with him, leave alone multiple. Pitching trumps batting. Always was, always will be. Thats another reason why TWO superstars couldnt turn the Angels into a winning team. There is no potential fame, Ohtani already is at the peak of fame. From now on (most likely as a one way player) it goes downwards. In two or three years the next big thingy will be hyped by MSM... By then, max 5 WAR Ohtani will be just another guy of a dozen stars known to baseball fans only. It all will end up like the Cabrera, Rodriguez or Pujols monster contracts. No championships, but a big fat minus in the books. Check facts next time before trying to lecture somebody in a arrogant way. Fanboism and worshipping do not change reality. @@dathunderman4

He changed the game. I wouldn’t be surprised In 10-15 years you’ll see the evolution of a pitcher. They are all most likely going to pitch and hit well
how did HE change the game? Babe Ruth did the same thing over 100 years ago, he isn't the first guy who can do both. Though he is one of the few who can do both as well as he does.
@@mooseheadjack1 I meant not a lot of pitchers hit 300 every year. Only him and Ruth did it and Ruth I think did it only two years. I wouldn’t be surprised to see more in the future hit 280 and up who are pitchers but can dh too
@@Arizonadude but he doesn't. He is a lifetime .274 hitter. And, given that playing two positions puts them more at risk, I think Ohtani is going to be the exception, not the norm. I wonder if Ohtani learnt from the Trout contract? He's getting guaranteed money but is structured so it won't stop the Dodgers signing/keeping top end players (on sizable contracts) to play alongside him.
In2 years the hype is over. Ohtani, as good as he is, will be one of a dozen 5 WAR players. By that time a new "hero" is made up... Worst baseball contract ever (including Fielder and Davis).
we need a cap, and a floor. It will prevent the nonsense that the Dodgers, Yankees and Mets (among other big market teams) do, and also keep teams like Oakland from paying their entire team less than some individual players make.
It makes a lot of sense paying that much money to Ohtani. On opening day next year, those Ohtani Jerseys will be SOLD OUT and each jersey will be $200 dollars each
I knew 3-months ago that Shohei Ohtani were to sign a contract after 2023 season it will only be with a Los Angeles Dodgers. Top reason he chose Dodgers because (1) he dose not have to move, (2) he likes Southern California weather, (3) and most of all remember he's Japanese Samurai for Japanese to eat Japanese food often as possible is very important to them (because I'm Japanese so I know) and it happened to be translater Ippei Mizuhara's dad owns Japanee restaurant in Irvine😮so Shohei can eat home cook meals from Ippei's dad's owner/chef's foods whenever he's in Southern California. Eating favorite foods gives a person strength both body and mind.
Side Note: Corey Seager who was drafted by the Dodgers, was meant to be extended with the original team. But instead he signed with the Rangers for 10Y/$325M. That’s less than a half of Ohtani’s new contract with the same number of years.
I tried to buy Ohtani Shirt but it’s $172 & I guess the company felt it was too expensive for me. But just love Ohtani!! Been following him for 3 years.
For the love of all that is holy people please please see this contract and realize there's only 4-5 teams in this entire league that can afford to play this game. We need a salary cap or we'll continue to head away from parity and small market teams will be doomed to play a different front office game forever.
For some reason, when Ohtani does it, it just seems more than it is. Other great players hit huge home runs but when Ohtani hits a monster home run the crack of the bat makes you stop to watch. And pitching, batters swing on a chase that's literally 3 feet outside the strike zone. Or the "what just happened..." look. LOL
Ohtani is great and all, but 700 for 10 years!? That's crazy, it's almost impossible for a deal like this to be good for the team. It would be cool if he bought a team before he retires though, I'd like to see a guy own, pitch, and hit for the team.
The Dodgers will easily sellover $100million in ticket sales alone in the regular season, perhaps more in 2024 when Shohei pitches again. Factor in the increased revenue from broadcasting rights, merchandise, ect, they will get this back. Look at soccer players making over $100 million a season to play about once a week while baseball has 162 games plus the playoffs before saying this contract is way too much.
Where and when will the Colonation Ceremony be held? But I wonder the Unicorn can wear a king's crown. And where will the KABUTO go? I remember that was procured from japanese manufacturer by Shohei when with LAA.
Congratulations to Ohtani for not long ago coming in from overseas, to cashing in on his supreme talent here in free agency. Now to see what ends up happening with Mike Trout if anything does at all.

This is a great example of a bidding war that got carried away so the "winner" lost. Othani was going to have a hard time doing enough for 10 years to justify a $50 million AAV. $70 million is just stupid and careless. I mean good for him, no hate to Othani HE did the right thing. But the guy is a pitcher having his second TJ on the wrong side of 30 who puts more strain on himself than any other player in the game and who has been doing it at a professional level for going on 12 years. He's already out as a pitcher for '24 so your paying 70 Mil for a DH, and IF he can even come back to pitching at a top tier level at all, he's not going to be able to keep it up more than 3 maybe 4 years tops and that's an optimistic guess because remember other pitchers his age with his injury history don't also have to work on keeping their swing and base running in good form. So if the Dodgers are lucky they get MAYBE 4 years of paying more money than Ronald Acuña Jr and Gerret Cole make combined for an ace pitcher/ great DH and 6 more than of paying that for a great DH (still a terrible deal) and God forbid his swing starts to fade in his late 30s you may be paying $70 mil a year for an average DH by the time all is said and done. There's just no way to make this a GOOD deal for the Dodgers, because even if he never loses a step and stays a great pitcher and hitter all the way to the age of 40 (which isn't happening) you STILL could have gotten 2 ace pitchers at that price, or the best pitcher and DH available for probably $10 million a year less. As far as "making the money back" that could MAYBE work for a small market team with tickets to sell, but there's not a ton of tickets available for LA Dodgers games anyway, and 80% is their annual revenue is TV deals, and gate. Which Othani can do little to improve. You think he's going to sell $200 million worth of jerseys? Let alone $700 million. Nope. This deal had 2 winners, Othani and whoever represents him. To be clear I want to say again no hate to Othani, he did exactly what I, and anyone else would have done. My criticism is of the Dodgers GM who obviously decided they HAD to have him even once the price got so high it no longer made sense. I wouldn't be surprised if one of the league's craftier GMs just kept a bidding war up to get the Dodgers to absurdly overpay and effectively cripple themselves in the FA market for years to come.
Considering how Mbappe got offered a billion to join a soccer team for just one season, baseball as a whole is a LONG way to catch up bigger markets as a whole. But Ohtani is the best baseball athelete to trust to break those molds in the future, even if people in the east still know names of cricket players more than MLB players.
The thing people dont realize as to why he was signed for 700 is bcz he makes the dodgers WAY MORE than 700 mill in 10 years. With the entire japanese market now wanting to watch dodgers games, ads behind homeplate (go watch any angels game, especially ones ohtani pitches), jersey sales, extra ticket sales, extra parking, extra food, and any other way teams make money off a player. Ohtani will make the dodgers 5x what ANY OTHER player in the entire MLB could at minimum. And that doesn't even cover his on the field worth. He will easily make the dodgers 1.5 billion over these 10 years at minimum. Especially with playoffs and presumably WS wins? It will probably be over 2 billion. If anything ohtani was STILL underpaid

Nobody is worth that kind of money for hitting and throwing a baseball. I am a huge baseball fan, but refuse to spend the kinda money it costs to buy a ticket for a major league game BECAUSE of these RIDICULOUS SALARIES! Players and owners greed is killing the game, not the game itself. When I was a kid, Wrigley Field was full of kids because the price of a general admission ticket was $2.50! Today kids are not growing up going to the ballpark because they cannot afford it. The sport is killing its fan base.
Obviously I do not know how much money Shohei brings to clubs because they talk about all the merch sales he brings and general exposure to the club, but I cannot help but think this will be a contract that will hurt the Dodgers in the back end of it, especially as its meant to be more money towards the end. His first tommy john only let him pitch for a couple of seasons, so how long will he be able to pitch after the second? He's worth $70M a year as he is right now, but will he be in 5 years when his elbow is gone again? I guess if nothing else he'll at least be more with it than DeGrom because at least he can hit! That's why I ❤ America. I am so happy for Shohei. He's a national hero back home in Japan 🇯🇵 Now, the pride & joy from the Land of the Rising Sun made sports history.
I’m not Japanese, I’m Chinese. But yes Asian representation is a good thing not only is he helping Japanese people. I think he’s representing well for Asian people as whole.
As I just told my buddy, "Ohtani is great and all, but can he also MANAGE the team?"
Yeah but he is legitimately the greatest of all time if he keeps up his level for 5 more years and does well for 10
Lol
maybe he will bat in 3rd thru 9th spots in the lineup...baseball is a joke, half the teams have no chance to win before the season even starts
@@DerbyKnowledge93like the nfl and the nhl and nba 😂😂😂😂
@haydengames8847 just give me 2 more solid years of being a 2 way player and I'll cement him as the GOAT. He been doing this for 3 years now.
More players should do what Shohei did and announce his decision instead of having reporters doing it
No player has ever really had the authority to do it themselves. It's a nice thought though.
As if the Dodgers didn’t already have really a good fan turnout (which they do), this guy is going to put even more butts in seats. Hats off to the Dodgers, I know there are a lot of fans that don’t like them, but I have always had a ton of respect for LA. I know I’ll be getting tickets the next time the Dodgers come to MN to kick the Twins teeth in 😂
Love your channel my man been here from the jump, but the word is “historic,” not “historical.” Love the content as always.
lol
Same though
dodgers apparently weren't as concerned about the surgery on ohtan's elbow because the doctor who actually performed it is the official dodger's team surgeon. they apparently vetted the surgeon and his opinion whether he can come back at full strength in terms of pitching.
Deferral could mean it extends to past his retirement as well. With inflation that means it's less NPV. But Ohtani makes more than $40 million a year in endorsements. His idea to defer the majority of his contract seems to speak to his want to be on a winning team. - WW
5:55 After California taxes come into effect, he'll be making about $7 per year.
Lol
And Dodgers fans will be drinking 40 dollar beers at their stadium lol.
As a frequenter of Giants games, I was really hoping to have Pocari Sweat at Oracle Park. But why would Ohtani want to go from the Angels to essentially the Angels minus Trout
Why would the Shohei let alone any superstar want to go to the giants? It’s more than just the money
Because Shohei has no integrity and is manipulative:
Lie #1) Said he didn't want to play for a big market.
@@9inchpincher better than the shithole that is LA and the surrounding area.
You're spot on... I was making this exact argument that this is not a baseball contract but a marketing contract

You must be genius😂

Trout Judge Yordan Alvarez Acuña and Bryce Harper all have higher lifetime OPS+ than Betts and Freeman.
So no, LA does not have 3 of the top 5 hitters in baseball.
I can't wait!! I'm expecting the Dodgers to have "most wins in a season", like maybe 145 out of 162 games and series. The record is 116 (1906-cubs and 2001-mariners).
I hope he can stay healthy, this dude has Henry Aaron, Joe Montana, Michael Jordan potential.
Makes me sick!!
NO ONE deserves nor NEEDS that kind of $$$…
That’s more than some countries entire GDP
100% this was a business decision first and foremost. Ticket sales, merch, Japan tv rights etc. Dodgers will make that money back eventually. I mean, just go to Dodger stadium, they're still selling Valenzuela jersey's about 30 years after his retirement and they still sell very well. This signing was much more than just baseball.
I'm glad Ohtani is not a man who is weirdly loyal to the Angels. He doesn't miss the choice of how to live "as a player".
Still overpaying

I used to go to Angeles games with my best friend. It’s crazy to see he’s now a dodger. I joked saying if he doesn’t resign as a angel let’s keep him in La so we can both still watch him little did I know it would actually happen
He changed the game. I wouldn’t be surprised In 10-15 years you’ll see the evolution of a pitcher. They are all most likely going to pitch and hit well
how did HE change the game? Babe Ruth did the same thing over 100 years ago, he isn't the first guy who can do both. Though he is one of the few who can do both as well as he does.

but he doesn't. He is a lifetime .274 hitter. And, given that playing two positions puts them more at risk, I think Ohtani is going to be the exception, not the norm. If you rely on one guy to play two positions, when he gets hurt, you are have to replace two positions. It's just not really feasible.

I wonder if Ohtani learnt from the Trout contract?
He's getting guaranteed money but is structured so it won't stop the Dodgers signing/keeping top end players (on sizable contracts) to play alongside him.
For a guy who just had his 2nd TJ surgery! He’s gonna be a so/so pitcher AT BEST, if he can even be a stater again.
In2 years the hype is over. Ohtani, as good as he is, will be one of a dozen 5 WAR players. By that time a new "hero" is made up... Worst baseball contract ever (including Fielder and Davis).
We do need a Salary cap on Baseball tbh. Rich teams always in on talks for every player even if they already spending 220 million 💀
we need a cap, and a floor. It will prevent the nonsense that the Dodgers, Yankees and Mets (among other big market teams) do, and also keep teams like Oakland from paying their entire team less than some individual players make.
It makes a lot of sense paying that much money to Ohtani. On opening day next year, those Ohtani Jerseys will be SOLD OUT and each jersey will be $200 dollars each
With all realness the Dodgers could have one of the greatest trio's in sports history MOOKIE BETTS, FREDDIE FREEMAN, AND THEN SHOHEI OHTANI
and yet they will still lose in the playoffs.
8:42 "It's actually Los Angeles". Arte Moreno just lost his superstar player. There was no need to take a personal at shot him. 😂
RIP ShoBay 2023-2023
Thanks bro, you should just start posting and crushing 💙
That's a Queens crown in the video, not a Kings crown. Just for reference 😂😂
Ohtani probably calling up Yamamoto like....."Yooooooooo"
If kershaw comes back the dodgers will start the 2024 season with 4 no doubt hall of famers on the team…. Nuts
Side Note: Corey Seager who was drafted by the Dodgers, was meant to be extended with the original team. But instead he signed with the Rangers for 10Y/$325M. That’s less than a half of Ohtani’s new contract with the same number of years.
if healthy seager can only do half of what ohtani can do. both mvp level of course but ohtani is worth more while healthy

@@Mattrz34 overpriced tho some cards on here $300 plus it's ridiculous how ppl think thier cards are worth that much.
Now that is way to completely BREAK Internet and SPORTS.. OMG!!

700 million for a DH not playing the field... not knowing if he will ever be an effective pitcher again?? Thanks, but ill pass lmao.
Well. He must be really good
I tried to buy Ohtani Shirt but it’s $172 & I guess the company felt it was too expensive for me. But just love Ohtani!! Been following him for 3 years.
Humble man get 70 mil/year...love shohei
LA is crazy rn, all these superstars in different sports in the city!!!
They can milk him for over a billion over this decade easily. Good deal.
He's a superstar in Japan, very marketable guy.
Mike Trout has about 3 good years left in his injury prone career.
If NFL players ever got the salary cap removed, a star QB would sign for a billion dollars over 10 years. Without a doubt.
Mahomes is the only one who would be worthy of that, way too many injuries in football to pay that much for so few games.
*Historic. Not "historical," which does not mean "special in all of history," but rather just means "relating, or according, to history," as in the Historical Society, or "the historical home of . . ."
Hey iTalkStudios didn't you have the Giants as a lock for ohtani 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
It was my pick yeah😣
As a diamnodbacks fan i cannot thank the dodgers enough. Like you said he fills the seats on the road or at home. So having him in division means we should make lots due to upped sales tickets. While i dont like the dodgers getting better i know superteams dont work
Now that it's done, it seems almost inevitable that he'll be injured for 2/3 of his career
Most boring outcome possible
Considering how Mbappe got offered a billion to join a soccer team for just one season, baseball as a whole is a LONG way to catch up bigger markets as a whole.
But Ohtani is the best baseball athelete to trust to break those molds in the future, even if people in the east still know names of cricket players more than MLB players.
Those Sisters of Perpetual Whatever welcomes Ohtani to the Los Angeles Dodgers and look forward to seeing him at Pride Night in 2024. 🌈
“Ohtani is the closest thing baseball has had to a celebrity” - A Rod looks down at his feet, take a deep breath, grabs his monitor and throws it at the wall - “AHHHHHHHHHHH”
when i saw him sign with the dodgers, my heart dropped
He can buy the WNBA and all the teams and still have plenty of money 🤣😂
An Asian Japanese born being the megastar and highest paid in a USA made sport is a generational shift for sports
When the tweet came out from passan that he announced it on instagram, I thought it was a fake account. Then I saw the account, and went to the instagram page. And there it was.
Complete random side note, I just realised I have the same god damn birthday as Shohei

As an Angels fan, a little part of me died when I saw this. This is especially bad because I know that the Angels would use this money to overpay for an old and washed up player. :(
White and red uniform was so fitting for Ohtani though, its literally Japan flag colors🇯🇵
To me it's a bad move so unlike the Dodgers it was pretty obvious the Dodgers were going to do it but Yamamoto Snell and Cody was the better moves the Dodgers lost because they didn't have the pitching and when the best two hitters in the lineup struggle nobody else could pick up the slack the last couple of WS champions proved it takes a team rather then individual to win a WS will see what happens
Bold of you to assume they won't sign one or two of those guys that you listed.
Feels so good being a Dodgers fan!!! Go Dodgers!!!💙💙💙
As a Cubs fan who for no reason hates the Dodgers, let's just say I'm heart broken. The Cubs had two chances to sign Ohtani and they failed. I still wish Shohei the best as he makes more money than the city I live in.
Certain pitchers get paid over a million a game played. If they give up 5 runs in the first and bring a loss to the team, million bucks..
