I really don't think we've hit the sweet spot yet. We need modern, low resolution, monochrome replacement screen, which doesn't replace too much hardware, and is the same size as the original, without introducing any problems (such as the increased blur on the 3 inch screen). The ips screens are nice, but I don't think they suit the DMG and are a little overkill
I’ve installed the same kityestersay, but from Console5.com, which comes with a 3D printed bracket. It doesn’t use the tabs nor any adhesive and is perfectly centered. My only regrets are the palette problem (which is pretty easily fixable right now, ans should be fixed in the software anytime soon) and the fact that you have to stick with preset ones. There is no way to edit or create your custom palette. The included ones are OK, but I wish I could use softer tones for some. But it’s still a GREAT improvement for our beloved old DMGs. I’ve been able to restore a broken one with this, but with a great bright new display, that works great, wether in the dark of the night or in the plain daylight
Same here, in The Chinese Guy video we saw a better green original pallete for example and in this kit the green one looks so shiny and fake... Hope a Rev2 came out to fix this and then I will be sold! And hope a GBP one release sometime soon
6:12 No that doesent improve anything. If you scale it up, you wont magicaly get more detail. Its like watching TH-cam on 240p settings on a 240p vs a 4K tv. It wont make look better. This is a fixed pixel display, so it wont get less blury.
Agree with the pricing as mentioned below. Got the newer version of the ips screen without the crossed over grey colours on AliExpress for £44. Even states it’s the new one showing the difference in the grey
I get why it is so expensive, because of the additional board with the custom silicon to get the colours/brightness & probably because the production run is much smaller because the appeal of the DMG is smaller than an AGB/AGS... so yeah it's a hard sell for most people but then most people will be happy with a cheaper modded GBA, this is just for the DMG enthusiast.
@@BenWillock that's not the reason, for example I sell these kits for about 55$ right now, maybe a bit more in the future when I have my own spacers but no more than 60$😉
You bring to mind an alternate universe where Harry Potter didnt get his letter to Hogwarts and got into retro modding. Although he doesn't realize it he's using magic to make his beautiful mods.
I know e-paper displays aren't quite fast enough, yet, but I truly think the ultimate upgrade for the DMG would be an e-paper screen. Even as they are, in what is called "A2 mode" on a lot of ereaders and tablets, they just get a little bit of dirty-looking ghosting the longer they run, but that MIGHT be acceptable in some cases. I still feel unbelievably cheated by Qualcomm giving up on Mirasol displays. Those things were definitely the future...
Seems like the kit requires a ton of extra fixes. Why did they mold the shell to not be able to fit the screen? Rather than snipping off and sanding all those extra bits it seems like it'd make more sense to simply not mold them. I guess if you already need to solder in the speaker, soldering some extra wired to fix the color isn't a massive issue, but I shouldn't have to pay for what is basically a defective kit. They should be charging less until the issue is resolved.
@@jaxsonbarry947 I'm going to get crystal vc so I can shiny hunt suicine, shiny hunting is a great way to slow your playthrough down so you can get more out of the game ;)
I suppose the only big question I would have that isn't addressed in the video would be battery life. The OG Game Boy's big claim to fame was how ridiculously long the batteries lasted compared to competitors such as the Game Gear, and a big portion of that was due to the screen used. The Game Gear had a full-color screen and would eat through six batteries in a span of three hours as a result. The Game Boy used the lower-quality black-and-white screen to compensate, and had much better battery life in the range of 8 to 12 hours as a result. Since you're replacing the screen with a newer model with more features such as a colored backlight, what does that do to the battery life, since the rest of the system wasn't designed with those added features in mind?
Well I think that this mod losses totally the charm of a DMG, I mean, the screen based on the primal LCD technology is what defined the first Gameboy, this just took away that felling, you can simply emulate the system on a Android device and get the same result, in my opinion, the perfect mod for a DMG is the bivert backlight.
Nah, I understand what you mean but you’re just looking at this in the wrong way lol. This product is just another modification like the bivert Ed backlight that is meant to be an enhancement, you’re using original hardware and everything to power it, and it compliments one another. It literally is a product that modernizes the classic DMG. I have no qualms about emulating and enjoy doing it for some systems, but emulating game boy is one that I avoid due to the feeling. Playing it on PSP or android devices just never “feels” good, because of the image never fully feeling good enough. The pixels distort in ways where they’re washed out or don’t align right. This mod and the others however don’t mess with that
exactly. This mod just makes the DMG just another one of the 10,000 handheld systems with IPS screens that you can emulate Game boy games on. The pea soup green, crappy LCD DMG screen is iconic. You can emulate the games, but you can't emulate that old technology.
@@Dominicn123 don't misunderstandme, I know this is an enhancement in order to make the experience more enjoyable, i'm just telling that, in my opinion, this totally looses the charm of the original experience. I think is totally about perspective, i mean, classic Gameboy is a machine that i enjoy emulating the most because due to this is one of the simplest machine (besides ZX spectrum), is one of the most accurate emulations that's to the great effort of the scene, if you know how to set the proper aspect ratio, the right scale of pixels and even the right overlay, you'll get a petty similar experience like a DMG with this mod, not perfect, but really close and almost nobody will find a difference. Again,is just my opinion, i'll ever prefer the original screen with a backlight over this expensive mods or in last case or even emulation.
What has everyone’s experience been with retro modding lately? I’ve had a couple of order placed with them nearly two weeks ago and they have yet to ship. Is this normal for them?
It's not. They're usually incredibly quick. They've been experiencing quite a bit of difficulties lately, including problems with customs/ border issues. I think they put a notice up on their website to currently expect delays because of this, but normally, they're absolutely great. Just a bump in the road for now it seems.
I'm in the same boat, but their customer service is very helpful and quick to respond. Please be patient with them while they churn through their backlog!
I actually received my package a few hours ago. I didn’t have any shells trimmed, it just took a couple weeks. I do want to emphasize that I really like Retro Modding, and my items were good quality and professionally packaged. I made the mistake of buying this kit from Handheld Legend on day one, and they were charging $75 usd. It was already shipped before makho made these videos. Besides the price, the worst is that they haven’t even addressed the palette issue. There is a confusing sentence in the description like they were going to link to a tutorial, but it offers no explanation. Retro Modding waited until they at least created a fix and a mounting bracket, and then released it to the public. That’s a very respectable business in my opinion.
I think that it is still not 100% perfect... but it can definitely get there... (my idea of it being 100% perfect is not having to cut the original shell, have backlight, have high resolution, and have the original screen size....) I don’t mind soldering too much, as long as I don’t have to scrape away at the board to get to the traces... either wise, I think it is a decent mod for the time being👍. Good job RetroModding👌!
Don't think its possible since getting a direct screen replacement is impossible unless they pay someone to manufacture one, and with a minimum order of thousands units and all the costs involved they will not make a profit and will have to charge $200 for a direct drop in. The screen they are using are probably cheap generic and mass produced lcd screens so cheaper option to do it this way. Like you I dont want to cut into my original dmg case.
I might be wrong from the shots in the video, but the pixels on the new screen looked rectangular to the naked eye. That is going to mess with image accuracy at least a bit. Hard to say since I am not familiar with the games you were demoing.
Nice mod and I just adore that marsmello look. You could make video about battery life test with these screen modded Gameboys compared to the original. I'm curious to know how such screen affects the battery life.

Hi! I have the same soldering iron, but I have problems to get the solder stick to the tips... it is really a problem in usage. I always have to renew the tip with "Tippy". I use solder without lead, coud this be the reason? Do you use solder containing lead? And by the way, great things that you do ;-) I modded my childhood DMG with a backlight with retro look (no bivert). I found out, that you can get more contrast by rotating the polarizing film. This in addition to a warm white led gets you the standard retro look though it is illuminated. And I modded some Advance mit IPS v2. The Advance I first got to know about one year ago now is my favourite retro console/handheld.
Does the prebuilt kit come with speakers soldered on already too? Because you first soldered with that, not the weird screen color issue. It being horribly misaligned is a big issue too, except it doesn't even have the usual alignment menu to offset the pixels, odd when the screen is so much larger than the hole it fills, so it could easily adjust...
Because they are giving me expensive mods to showcase for you guys. I can’t always afford to buy the latest stuff all of the time. So I am thankful. I’m not sponsored by them.

1:38 and a partridge in a pear tree
It’s beautiful man. The colors scream switch lite. Nintendo needs to get into this market
I did a polariser and bivert mod to my DMG, had to repair the display cable anyway, so made sense to do the mod 😊
The angles are so perfect.
6:12 No that doesent improve anything. If you scale it up, you wont magicaly get more detail. Its like watching TH-cam on 240p settings on a 240p vs a 4K tv. It wont make look better. This is a fixed pixel display, so it wont get less blury.
still sayin oled would be the next step for this and the blacks on the screen would just be way better
Every DMG Gameboy is your dream, Elliott
Agree with the pricing as mentioned below. Got the newer version of the ips screen without the crossed over grey colours on AliExpress for £44. Even states it’s the new one showing the difference in the grey
Great video, thanks again for another one. I just got their standard backlight and bivert chip to keep my first DMG as close to original as possible.
I found "four players adapter DMG-07" in charity shop for 1£.
I love these game boys
Gameboy aside, that's the best cup of tea I've seen in a long time lol
That game with green screen from 8:04 reminds me Prince of Persia from like 25 years ago, oh boy what a game that was.
Great Scott! Marty we're in the future
I like programming for the GBA! Minecraft and Zelda and goldeneye :)
not a fan of the shell but the ips screen is sure a lovely addition
I prefer the bivert backlit screen mod. It keeps the more classic feel while still being superior to the original.
It looks literally nothing like the original or having a "classic" feel, it's just a gaudy mess.
Love that color combo
That's a super cool mod. Makes me kinda regret selling one of my spare gameboys the other week.
Woah! Amazing work as always! Love seeing these videos!
Ps. How was your chickensoup?
man I always have and always will love your dmg mods man I'm one of your original subscribers what if you made a bluetooth gameboy?
Waaaaay too expensive.
its 69$ nice price
Don't get why people do mods this expensive for the original game boy and not the gameboy advance. Heck you can just buy a GBA SP AGS-101 for less.
@@BenWillock that's not the reason, for example I sell these kits for about 55$ right now, maybe a bit more in the future when I have my own spacers but no more than 60$😉
Same price as any other screen mod like it.
I cried with happiness, it's beautiful
This was very satisfying to watch, thank you
You bring to mind an alternate universe where Harry Potter didnt get his letter to Hogwarts and got into retro modding.
You have a new intro... WOW!!!! Looks nice!
Just got my first pocket 2 days ago and a new shell for my old color. I think I’ve already put 4+ hours into Tetris already.
Get pokemon crystal, mega man, red and you'll be playing for days
yup I got red and I’m hopefully getting crystal in a few weeks.
@@jaxsonbarry947 I'm going to get crystal vc so I can shiny hunt suicine, shiny hunting is a great way to slow your playthrough down so you can get more out of the game ;)
yup agreed
This was cool to watch and I like the quick fix. It makes me wonder how far people have gone with there gameboys
I want this SO BADLY!
Great gadget bro, keep the good work,Regards Hacktuber 1.3m subs
I wish the screen was bigger. It really looks like so much more can be done
Fun to watch these console get restored
Holy crap that thing is awesome.
I also placed an order over two weeks ago and it hasn’t shipped. Something is up because my last order came very quick.
I'm in the same boat, but their customer service is very helpful and quick to respond. Please be patient with them while they churn through their backlog!
You haven't ordered a pre cut case have you? They take 4 weeks to do.
Awesome build buddy!
It might be expensive but come on-
he did it for us :)
Best Screen Ever
Holy shit it's Snake Roy!
Nice build👍,
Inspired me to go back and rebuild a couple of gbc's thats currently a work in progress.
TN_AU ahhh.... I see.... still think it would be really awesome to not modify the original case tho...
Maybe it's only a matter of time until there will be amoled displays for retro handhelds? Would be a sight to see!
tuto mode are also nice to watch, thanks
uuhggg i just thought that one before was THE ultimate screen to mod, now I have to buy this one to replace THE other screen lol that I have ordered.
Wow what a beautiful mod I'll wait for the newer revision kits to come out.Im not good at bridging thx Elliot love the vids mate :)
Great job it looks fantastic!
its been exactly a year since this video has released
Love your channel! Been watching for quite a while now and would be really interested in getting into restoration myself thanks to you. How'd you get into it? I don't know if anyone else would be interested in watching a video where you tell about it but I'd really love to hear your story. ☺️
A brilliant job as usual! I want one!
Beautiful color scheme. I'd like a GBA SP in those colors, or a DS Lite.
I like the fact that it is a full length screen. Looks almost too good like you said but ill have to try one out in person to make that decision. Definitely one to go on my to mod list. Liked todays thumb nail with the retro future logoed cart in the back. 👍
Love the case, very attractive!
This is what the original gameboy should,ve been.
Great video as always, man that tea looked strong, what teabags do you use? Yorkshire tea??
Yup!
The Retro Future I’m quite partial to twinings tea 👍
who else wants more walkman videos
i love these ones tooo
dont get it twisted
Does the prebuilt kit come with speakers soldered on already too? Because you first soldered with that, not the weird screen color issue.
It being horribly misaligned is a big issue too, except it doesn't even have the usual alignment menu to offset the pixels, odd when the screen is so much larger than the hole it fills, so it could easily adjust...
I find this channel fascinating and loved the content but why does it seem like everything is a Retro Modding advertisement now?
Because they are giving me expensive mods to showcase for you guys. I can’t always afford to buy the latest stuff all of the time. So I am thankful. I’m not sponsored by them.
Doesn’t matter, that site has great products that helped me decide on what to buy, there’s plenty of modding items I find that I wish there were good videos about them that I could watch before I purchase them, this guy does that perfectly. He has his own opinions and doesn’t act as if they’re flawless or only in their interest at all, so there is literally nothing wrong with the format lol
Nice review by the way! To the point and it shows very well what to do.
my DMG has a bad screen, so an IPS mod would work great for it.
congraturation you just made yourself a Chinese knockoff.
(Yes the misspelling was intentional, hecc off)
Sold out.
I’m probably never gonna do any thing but still great job
I got the courage to Backlight my GBP after watching your vids! Reason I aced it on my first attempt! :D I really wanna import some GBs from Japan, haven’t pulled the trigger cause I don’t know what other fees I’d have to pay >o< Keep cranking out the vids amazing work!!!
Freaking awesome. I really like it.
i'm not good with soldering, shaky hands. i'm rather pleased to see there's offerings available so that someone like me can experience an ips screen without the need to botch up the whole thing.
